Chapter 9 - Before the Fire

Elinor's breath still lingered in her palms… its warmth, its scent, and the look of joy that hadn't left her eyes all that day.Since Dalerina had returned to the palace, the nights had grown harsher, for her heart now knew its way… but was locked behind doors.

It was only a matter of days before she found herself heading out almost every morning, in disguise, carrying Elinor's favorite food: Brazilian fish.In every visit, she noticed the other dragons' behavior toward her… bows, looks, even faint sounds as if greeting her.

Back to her mind came the story the head maid used to tell about the Friez lineage — those rare fairies who could command legendary dragons.Something in her heart began to believe… but she quickly hurried to deny the thought, dodging it as if afraid to face her own truth.

Still, she couldn't ignore what was happening…It had come to the point where she would order the dragons to be silent when their voices grew loud — and they would fall silent instantly, as if obeying their queen.

Day by day, her desire to free the dragons grew… especially Elinor, whose sorrow in her cell weighed heavier on Dalerina's heart than she could bear.

On the morning of the following week, she made her decision. She would go to the mountain… break the chains… and bear the consequences, unaware that Nazar, on a previous occasion, had noticed her repeated absence on the same day each week. That repetition stirred her curiosity, so she decided to follow her in secret, to confirm whether she was truly leaving the palace… and the surprise was greater than she expected. She had seen her shadow slip into the dragon guards' carriage. At that moment, she showed no reaction… but she followed the carriage quietly, until she was certain of its destination.

That morning, while Dalerina was on her way to the mountain, Nazar had already preceded her by a step — and told the king everything.Fairo tried to cover for her, but this time… he failed.

Upon reaching Elinor's cell, she broke the old collar that had bound her for years. The white dragon flapped her wings in a rush of freedom and flew out of the mountain to taste the sky.

But the moment didn't last…for a familiar voice rang through the corridor:

— "Such a beautiful sight, seeing you rejoice… before it all comes to an end."

Dalerina turned slowly… to find Nazar standing there, with a row of armed guards behind her.

"The kingdom will know tomorrow that what once lurked in the shadows has awakened… and the fire that will ignite will spare no one."
