Chapter 20 - Chapter 20

Gwen's breaths come in ragged gasps as she ducks behind a crumbling pillar, narrowly avoiding a blast from a Limax rifle. The cavern echoes with the screech of alien weaponry and the pained grunts of the Morlocks. This isn't going well. Not at all.

Laura is a whirlwind of lethal grace, her claws tearing through the gelatinous bodies of the Limax soldiers, but even her ferocity can't stem the tide. The Morlocks fight bravely, but their crude weapons are no match for the aliens' advanced technology. The air is thick with the stench of dissolving slime and the acrid smell of gunfire.

Gwen peeks over the edge of the pillar, her mind racing. They're trapped, pinned down, and the Limax are closing in. They need a miracle, or at least, a seriously clever plan. Her eyes scan the cavern, desperately searching for an advantage, anything to turn the tide.

Then, she sees it.

Pipes. Of course, pipes! High above, almost lost in the shadows of the cavern ceiling, a network of thick pipes snakes across the rock. They must be carrying water in them. It has to be water. That would explain all the condensation. If only we could get to them. And water is the aliens' weakness. If they can somehow rupture those pipes, unleash a deluge of water onto the aliens… It's crazy, but it might just work.

A plan forms in her mind, risky but possibly their only chance. She glances at Laura, her face grim but determined. "Laura," she says, her voice barely audible above the chaos, "can you reach those pipes up there?"

Laura's eyes follow Gwen's gaze, her expression sharpening as she takes in the situation. She nods, a silent acknowledgment of the danger and the necessity. Without a word, she begins to calculate the trajectory, the angles, the distance.

Gwen turns to Callisto, the Morlock leader's face a mask of grim determination. "Callisto," she says, her voice urgent, "we need a distraction. Can you and your people draw their fire? Give Laura a chance to get into position."

Callisto's one good eye glints with a fierce light. She understands. Survival isn't just about strength, it's about cunning. "Morlocks!" she bellows, her voice cutting through the din. "With me! Give our little friend a chance to work her magic!"

With a defiant roar, the Morlocks surge forward, a ragtag army of mutants charging headlong into the line of fire. The Limax turn their attention to the new threat, their weapons spitting bolts of energy, and a small, lethal figure darts towards the ceiling.

"Now, Laura! Now!" Gwen yells, pointing at the ceiling.

Like a predator unleashed, Laura launches herself towards the pipes. She uses the Morlocks' shields as launch pads, leaping from one precarious handhold to another. The Limax, momentarily confused by the sudden shift in tactics, hesitate, giving Laura the precious seconds she needs.

Reaching the first pipe, Laura digs her adamantium claws into the metal. [SCRREEEE] Sparks fly as she tears through the tough material. With a grunt of effort, she finishes the cut, moving to the next pipe.

A thin trickle quickly becomes a torrent. Water gushes from the ruptured pipe, drenching the Limax below. [HISSSSS] A chorus of agonized screeches fills the cavern as the Limax react to their weakness. Their forms begin to bubble and melt, their gelatinous bodies dissolving into shapeless puddles of green slime. The stench intensifies, a sickening mix of decay and acid.

Laura continues her work, a one-person demolition crew, systematically destroying the network of pipes. One by one, the Limax collapse, their weapons clattering to the ground as they succumb to the water. The cavern transforms into a muddy swamp, the Morlocks cheering. Slowly, the sounds of gunfire and alien cries fade into a symphony of dripping and groaning.

A smile tugs at Gwen's lips, relief washing over her as the last of the aliens dissolve into nothingness. The immediate threat is over. For now.

Her eyes dart to the center of the cavern. Most of the Limax may be gone, but several remain, frantically loading the pulsating sacs containing the human hosts into a ramp leading up into their saucer-like ship. Those sacs have to be stopped, Gwen realizes, or else all of this will be for nothing.

"They're getting away!" she shouts, gesturing towards the ship. "We need to stop them!"

Gwen tries to move, but immediately, more energy bolts slam into the pillar next to her. She is pinned down. A few surviving Limax soldiers have taken cover near the ship, and they are laying down a withering field of fire, protecting their retreat. Callisto and the Morlocks try to advance, but are similarly forced back, their makeshift shields proving useless against the concentrated firepower.

"I'll go!" Laura shouts, her voice tight with determination. Without waiting for a response, she breaks cover and charges towards the ship.

Laura moves with a speed that defies belief, dodging and weaving through the stream of energy blasts. Her healing factor is their only shot, Gwen recognizes, as the blasts that hit her will only slow her down for a second. But even her incredible agility can't protect her from everything.

Just as Laura reaches the ramp, a Limax soldier throws a small, metallic sphere. It lands at Laura's feet and explodes. [BOOM]

The blast sends Laura flying backwards, slamming into a nearby wall. She slumps to the ground, momentarily stunned. Her clothes are torn and burned, revealing angry welts and cuts across her skin. The air is filled with the acrid smell of burnt flesh and singed hair. She is healing, but it will take time. Time they don't have.

"Laura!" Gwen shouts, her voice filled with concern.

From her position, Gwen can see the ship's engines beginning to glow. Any second now, the Limax will escape with their human cargo. Desperation claws at her throat. They're so close, yet so far. What do we do now?!

The last Limax boarded, dragging the final egg sac onto their ship. A mechanical hiss announces the closing of the hatch, sealing the captives inside. The engines whine, building to a fever pitch, and the ship begins to rise, hovering just above the cavern floor.

No, no, no, no! We're losing them! Gwen believed they were defeated, that they were too late to stop the Limax.

Suddenly, emerald spikes erupted from the ground, piercing the hull of the vessel like a volley of crystalline arrows. The ship shuddered, its ascent halted, metal groaning under the force of the crystals. The engines sputtered and died, the humming replaced by an ominous silence.

Gwen whirls around, squinting to see through the steam and grime. Ben strides into view, his face grim. Diamondheart follows close behind, her crystalline form radiating a soft, green light.

"Sorry we're late," Ben says, his voice echoing through the cavern. He glances at Laura, then back at the ship. "But I figured you might need a little help." He looks at Gwen and winks, "We made it just in time, right?"

A rush of warmth floods Gwen. Thank goodness! She's been so worried, so focused on the immediate danger, that she hadn't dared to hope they'd show. Now, seeing Ben's cocky grin and Diamondheart's unwavering presence, something loosens in her chest.

Diamondheart steps forward, her crystalline hands glowing. With a surge of power, she rips open the doors of the Limax ship, the metal groaning in protest. The remaining Limax soldiers, caught off guard, scramble to react, but it's too late.

Ben, Gwen, Laura, Diamondheart, and Callisto, with several Morlocks, stand, weapons trained. This cavern is their turf, and they are ready to defend it.

Ben's voice cuts through the tense silence. "It's over," he says, his tone leaving no room for argument. "Give up, and maybe we'll let you slimeballs melt in peace."

As Diamondheart finishes tearing apart the Limax ship, the Morlocks, with the help of Gwen and Laura, carefully extract the egg sacs containing the human captives. They move with a surprising gentleness, considering their rough exterior, gently carrying the sacs to a safer corner of the cavern. The rescued humans were going to be ok, for now.

The remaining Limax, caught between Diamondheart's imposing figure and the Morlocks' makeshift weapons, huddle together in the center of the cavern. Their beady eyes dart nervously from side to side, searching for an escape that doesn't exist. Callisto strides towards them, her face a mask of cold fury.

"So," Ben asks, his gaze fixed on the trapped aliens, "what are you gonna do with these guys?"

Callisto stops a few feet from the Limax, her hand resting on the hilt of a scavenged blade. "What do you think?" she replies, her voice low and dangerous. "They tried to turn us into food. They invaded our home. We will make sure they never do it again."

Ben nods slowly. He wasn't exactly against killing, especially when it came to man-eating aliens.

But Ben stopped her because he wanted to try something first. He remembers that the Omnitrix has a function to scan new aliens. Ben wonders if he can scan the Limax aliens so he can unlock them in the Omnitrix, even though their uses might be limited. Having more aliens unlocked is a good thing.

He moved closer to the huddled Limax. "Hold up," he says, raising a hand to stop Callisto. "I wanna try something before you… y'know…"

Gwen's eyes narrow. "Ben, what are you doing? Those things are dangerous."

Laura steps forward, her claws extending slightly. "It is not safe. They will attack."

Even Diamondheart seems concerned, her crystalline brow furrowing. Ben knows they're just trying to be protective.

"It'll be fine," Ben says, trying to sound reassuring. "If they even dare to harm me, you guys can just pour a bucket of water on them immediately."

The Limax aliens, understanding the threat of the water, shrink back further, their gelatinous bodies trembling. The Morlocks smirk, knowing the power of their improvised weapon.

Ben holds up the Omnitrix, pointing the face of the device towards the aliens. "Okay, Omnitrix," he mutters, "time to do your thing. Scan these… uh… slimeballs."

But nothing happens. The Omnitrix remains stubbornly pink, showing no signs of recognizing the Limax's DNA. Ben frowns, fiddling with the faceplate, pressing buttons, and rotating the dial. Still nothing.

"Come on, work, you stupid thing," he mutters under his breath.

Gwen shakes her head. "Ben, it's not working. Just let Callisto handle it."

Laura nods in agreement, ready to step in at a moment's notice. Diamondheart stands ready, her crystals glimmering.

As a desperate measure, Ben jams his left fist into the mass of Limax aliens, submerging the Omnitrix in their slimy bodies. A collective gasp goes up from Gwen, Laura, and Diamondheart, who all think Ben is doing something incredibly stupid. Even the Morlocks seem surprised by his reckless move.

But suddenly, the Omnitrix starts beeping erratically. The pink hue is gone, replaced by a flashing yellow light. At the same time, the Omnitrix badge on Diamondheart's belt starts beeping yellow. Ben grits his teeth, enduring the disgusting sensation of the Limax slime coating his arm.

Then, as suddenly as it began, the beeping stops. The yellow light fades, and the Omnitrix returns to its normal pink color. Ben pulls out his hand, dripping with slime. He checks the Omnitrix screen, and a triumphant grin spreads across his face.

"Yes!" Ben exclaims, "I did it!"

He holds up the Omnitrix for everyone to see. A new silhouette flickers on the screen – a female-shaped Limax alien, all curves and bulges.

"Ha!" Ben pumps his fist. "New alien unlocked!"

Ben wipes the slime off his hand, not wanting to think about where it had been. He turns to Callisto, who looks impressed despite herself. "Alright, they're all yours," he says, gesturing to the Limax. "Just try not to make too much of a mess."

Callisto smirks, a hint of genuine gratitude in her eyes. "We know how to handle our trash," she says. "Thank you for your help, surface dweller. You have proven useful."

"Anytime," Ben replies, shrugging. "If you ever need a hand dealing with any other unwanted aliens, you know where to find me."

Callisto steps closer, her gaze intense. "Perhaps I will," she purrs, her voice taking on a sultry edge. "I've been needing a strong mate to help run things down here. And there's something about you, Tennyson… something… irresistible." Her eyes rake over his body, lingering on his toned physique. "Plus, you're quite handsome."

A wave of discomfort washes over Ben. Callisto was a good-looking woman, but the whole 'strong mate' thing felt a little too intense. Before he can respond, a wall of bodies forms in front of him.

Gwen, Laura, and Diamondheart stand shoulder-to-shoulder, their expressions a mixture of anger and protectiveness.

"Time to go, Ben," Gwen says firmly, her eyes narrowed at Callisto.

Laura steps forward, her claws extending further. "We are leaving now," she says, her voice laced with a subtle threat.

Diamondheart's crystals glow brighter, casting an ominous light on the cavern walls. She says nothing, but her stance speaks volumes. They weren't going to let Ben be alone with her. It was obvious, he was theirs and not hers.

Ben, sensing the rising tension, puts a hand on Gwen's shoulder. "Yeah, you're right," he says. "It's getting late. Thanks again for everything, Callisto."

He gives the Morlock leader a polite nod, then turns to his companions. "Let's get out of this sewer."

With a final glare at Callisto, Gwen, Laura, and Diamondheart lead Ben away, their determination clear. Callisto watches them go, a knowing smile playing on her lips. She had made her intentions known.
