Chapter 14: The Ghost in the Machine
The world was slowly, inexorably, moving towards the Avengers Initiative. S.H.I.E.L.D. was scrambling, trying to understand the Tesseract, dealing with the fallout of Loki's brief visit. Adama and Morgan, meanwhile, were refining their skills, preparing for the inevitable. But they realized something crucial: they were operating in the dark. They needed a direct, reliable pipeline to S.H.I.E.L.D.'s inner workings, someone who could feed them intel without ever knowing they were doing it.
"We need an asset," Adama declared one morning, sipping his coffee. "Someone low-level, easily overlooked, but with access. Someone we can... promote."
Morgan, who was already hacking into a dozen different government databases for fun, looked up, intrigued. "A mole? Oh, I like it. A little 'Manchurian Candidate' action, but for good."
"She's got a flair for the dramatic, that one. Must be the Stark in her."
"Exactly. Someone who's competent, but maybe a little stuck in the bureaucratic mud. Someone who deserves a leg up, but won't question why they're getting it."
They spent days sifting through S.H.I.E.L.D. personnel files, a task made easy by Morgan's unparalleled hacking skills. They found him: Agent Thomas Miller. A diligent, by-the-book analyst, perpetually overlooked for promotions despite his solid work. He had a family, a mortgage, and a quiet ambition. Perfect.
"Agent Miller," Morgan murmured, a mischievous glint in her eye. "Looks like his career is about to get a very mysterious boost."
Their plan was subtle, a series of calculated nudges. Morgan, using her digital prowess, would "fix" minor glitches in Miller's reports, making them appear more efficient, more insightful. She'd subtly highlight his contributions in internal memos, making his work shine just a little brighter.
Adama, meanwhile, used his Luck Manipulation. Miller would "accidentally" overhear a crucial conversation between higher-ups that he could then use to his advantage. A key piece of data he needed for a report would "mysteriously" appear on his desk. He'd find himself in the right place at the right time to impress a superior.
[System Message] Luck Manipulation initiated. Target's promotion secured. 10 Non-Permanent Luck Points spent.
"Ten points for a human intel pipeline? That's a steal. He'll be our little S.H.I.E.L.D. pigeon, delivering us all the juicy gossip."
They watched, amused, as Agent Miller's career trajectory suddenly skyrocketed. He went from overlooked analyst to a rising star, getting transferred to more sensitive departments, gaining access to higher-level intelligence. He was bewildered, attributing his sudden success to "hard work" and "finally being noticed."
"He's almost too wholesome," Morgan commented, watching Miller's beaming face during a virtual promotion ceremony. "I almost feel bad for manipulating his destiny."
"Almost," Adama agreed, a wry smile on his face. "But think of the greater good, Morgs. He's a good man, and now he's in a position to actually help. And we get to know exactly what Fury's up to. It's a win-win. Mostly for us, but still a win-win."
Agent Miller, oblivious to the two unseen forces guiding his career, became their silent asset. He was a ghost in the machine, a loyal agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. who was, unknowingly, also serving the interests of two teenage superheroes determined to save the world, one subtle nudge at a time. The gears of the timeline were turning, and Adama and Morgan had just installed a very useful, very human, sensor.
