Chapter 1 - boxes

Thursday 12:30 PM

"HURRY UP AND CLEAN YOUR ROOM!!" Sebastian's Mom shouted at the top of her lungs while rummaging around her purse, looking for her keys.

"The couple is going to be here to see the house in 14 minutes, and your room looks a mess!"

"I'll get to it," Sebastian said, looking around his room, a smirk growing on his face.

"WHEN!?? When the couple is knocking on the door!?"

"It's not even that bad, it'll only take like 5 minutes"

"If your room isn't clean by the time they get here I swear to—"

+KNOCK+KNOCK+KNOCK+

Samantha and Sebastian's heads shoot up.

"Oh shit!" Sebastian jumps to his feet, trips over his rug, hits his head against his desk, jumps back up, and begins picking up piles of random things to shove in his closet.

"What!? Why are they here already!???

Samantha throws her purse at Sebastian.

"W-what am I supposed to do with this!?"

"I don't know! You're built like a bad bitch, just pose or something."

"Pose!?"

Samantha runs to the front door and opens the door.

"Heyyy—oh..."

"What?" Sebastian yells from his room down the hall.

"It's just your friends, (to the friends); hey boys and Riley, can you guys give us a few minutes?"

Liam nods to the group

"Tell him to hurry up, we don't have all day"

Sebastian's friends walk off.

Thursday 12:48 PM

Tyler slams on the brakes, "Yo! Go nigga! This nigga break checking me!"

"You need to slow down anyway" Liam sighs, putting his feet up on the dash. Tyler instantly pushes his feet off.

"I just got this joint and you're getting dirt all on it."

"What's your problem bro? chill,"

Tyler punches his steering wheel, blasting his horn.

"A'ight my bad, my bad, this dude just—pissing me off right now, bro, (towards the car in front of them); Go!!"

Liam turns around to face Sebastian.

"So, your mom found a new place?" Liam looked more disappointed than he sounded.

"Yeah, in North Dakota"

"NORTH DAKOTA!?" Sebastian Tyler and Riley, who was just now waking up, shouted in disbelief.

"That's across the country! What's even in North Dakota? Snow?" Riley raised an eyebrow.

"I guess" Sebastian shrugged.

"Shit ain't gonna be the same without you." Tyler smacked his lips.

"Yeah...it's okay though, I'll still call and...text in the group chat and stuff" Sebastian's voice got quieter as he spoke.

"Your mom's probably going to want to break up with that old dude after 3 months like her other boyfriends, then ya'll would have done all this moving for nothing" Riley rolls her eyes.

"She's actually not moving us for a boyfriend this time," Sebastian said, half surprised at the statement himself.

"Really? What's she moving for?" Tyler asked.

"She's getting promoted, her job wants her to move north before next year."

Thursday 6:00 PM

"Oh." Samantha tilted her head while staring out the window, watching the new neighbors take boxes out of a truck.

"What?" Sebastian didn't look up from his phone

"Our new neighbors are black."

"What!?"

"What's the problem with that?"

"Nothing? I'm just confused as to why that's the first thing on your mind?"

"It's just surprising, there are a lot of Mexicans in this neighborhood so...it's just...shocking to see another white, or, a black family." Samantha held her hands up in defense, letting a smile crack on her face.

"Imma go say hi, and it looks like they have a son, you should come with me."

"I'm good"

"Oh come on, you just don't wanna help them move boxes"

"Exactly"

"We'll just say you're busy after you greet them, come on it'll only take a minute"

"Fine"

Thursday 6:01 PM

"GODDAMN!" Samantha quickly covered her mouth, as Mrs.Stone bent over to pick up some twigs off the front lawn.

Samantha shoulder bumps her son, "Do you see this?—"

"Yeah..." Sebastian slowly nodded, his eyes wide open in disbelief.

"It's too bad that you guys will be moving out soon. You guys seem really nice." Mrs.Stone stands up straight and turns to face Samantha and Sebastian.

"I know, I love this place; wish we could be here forever. You wouldn't mind if we helped you guys out?"

"We?" Sebastian hissed before being elbowed by his mom.

"Oh no, I couldn't possibly ask you for anything!"

"Please I insist,"

"Oh okay, well if you do!" Mrs.Stone smiled.

"Maybe we can help you guys pack up when you need it!"

"Oh, you know what, that sounds great!" Samantha always put in a fake face when meeting new people, and always tried to act like a stereotypical happy white suburban mother. For some reason—a reason Sebastian could never figure out—she would slowly gain a southern accent when she did this.

"Okay, right now we're just moving some furniture if you could help with that?"

"Oh yeah sure!" Samantha followed Mrs.Stone to the U-Haul truck. Sebastian found himself unwillingly walking over to the back of the truck as well.

"Oh, this is my son, say hi!"

The boy looked up.

"Holy shit," Sebastian said under his breath as he stared at the Shirtless, tall, and toned milk chocolate that stood in the truck, setting down a box.

The boy flicked his head up to greet Samantha and Sebastian.

"You guys here to help unpack?" He asked.

"Why else would they—" Ms.Smith began.

"Mom..! I didn't ask you." The boy dropped his shoulder, already irritated from the day and all the moving around.

He didn't want to move to Texas. He didn't want to leave all his friends from Florida behind, and he hated that he had to uproot his entire life all because his parents decided now, of all times was the best time to try and make their marriage work again. it wasn't his decision to make yet the decision seemed to effect his life the most.

"Yeah, we're here to help."

Samantha and Sebastian nodded.

"Can y'all help with this couch? We've been trying to get it out all day."

There's a silence.

Samantha raised an eyebrow and slowly turned to Sebastian.

"I mean ya'll don't have to—"

"Yeah, we got you." Sebastian kicked the dirt beneath him and shrugged.

Thursday 6:06 PM

"Goh-DAMN!"

Sebastian exclaimed setting down his leg of the chair. Sebastian looked up when he heard a small laugh.

"Yeah." The boy smiled, sitting down, slightly less out of breath than Sebastian.

"If you guys are gonna keep helping, y'all can just grab boxes and stuff, I got the rest of the furniture." And as if he were never tired, the boy jumped back up to his feet and walked back outside to the truck.

Thursday 6:28 PM

"Thank you guys so, so much! And honestly, if you guys ever need help with anything, we're right across the street! We'd be happy to help!" Mrs.Smith hugged Samantha, and then Sebastian.

"Y'know, tomorrow we will be moving some of our things to the garage, maybe, you and your son could stop by?" Samantha asked.

"We'd love to!"

"Oh! And we never got your son's name! My son is Sebastian!" Samantha points to her son as she says his name.

Mrs.Smith did the same as she pointed to, "Maliki."
