Metheea was through the adjoining doorway before the second bell finished ringing.
Physicians and priests surrounded Azrayel's bed, blocking most of her view. Michael stood near his core while the senior physician examined the dark veins beneath his throat. Another priest held a bowl of medicine, waiting for instructions that came too quickly for Metheea to follow.
She could not see Azrayel's face.
"Is he awake?"
No one answered immediately.
Metheea started into the chamber, but Yise stepped near the entrance and held one arm before her without touching her.
"Let the physicians work, Your Highness."
"He is awake."
"And they need to make certain he remains that way."
The words struck harder than he intended. Regret crossed his face, but Metheea had already turned back toward the bed.
She gripped the edge of the doorway and forced herself to wait.
