Chapter 6 - The Storm That Follows

Scene 1: The Aftershock

Location: Emergency Medical Tent – Camp Khidmat

The sirens were wailing again.

Stretchers poured into the medical tent like a wave of red and agony. Soldiers with torn uniforms, civilians crying in languages Hana didn't fully understand, the smell of smoke and blood thick in the air.

Dr. Hana Mir was calm in the chaos. Her gloves were already on, her mask tied tightly.

"Laceration, lower abdomen. I need suction here!" she barked.

"Shrapnel in the leg—tourniquet, now!"

Behind her, a young boy groaned, holding his burned arm. No name, no ID—just pain.

She knelt beside him, her voice soft. "You're safe now, okay? I've got you."

But even as she worked, her thoughts were with Zayan.

He wasn't in the tent.

He was out there.

Scene 2: Into the Crossfire

Location: Route Bravo – 5km from Camp

Major Zayan Rauf moved with a tactical team through the wreckage of the hit convoy. Smoke curled into the air like warning signals. The bodies of two soldiers lay beside a blown-up truck—faces covered, dog tags clutched in Zayan's palm.

"No civilians made it," his lieutenant reported.

Zayan looked at the blast radius.

This wasn't just an ambush.

It was a message.

"Check for devices. They might've planted more."

As his team swept the area, Zayan heard it—a faint beep, then a whir.

"Incoming drone!"

They dove as the drone exploded above them, sending fire raining down like a hell-born monsoon.

When the smoke cleared, Zayan stood up slowly, wiping blood from a scrape across his cheek.

His jaw tightened.

"They knew we were coming."

Scene 3: A Message Left Behind

Back at camp, Hana was washing her hands when a soldier entered with a package—small, wrapped in canvas, no return label.

"For you, Dr. Hana. It was left near the gate."

She opened it cautiously.

Inside was a flash drive... and a letter.

"You heal them... and we'll keep sending more. Stay out of what doesn't concern you, Doctor. Or next time, we aim closer."

Her fingers trembled. Not from fear—but fury.

She ran to the comm tent and plugged the drive into the secure terminal. Zayan's voice came through seconds later—crackling over the field radio.

"Hana. I'm okay. Heading back soon."

She swallowed hard. "You need to hear something."

Scene 4: Secrets in the Shadows

That night, the camp's lights dimmed as a storm rolled over the horizon.

Hana and Zayan sat inside the comms room, rain thudding against the roof.

Zayan listened to the message on the drive.

"I've heard this voice before," he murmured. "He was one of our translators. A local. Kareem."

"But he was cleared," Hana said.

"He was trusted," Zayan corrected.

Silence hung thick between them.

Then he looked at her, his eyes dark. "They're not targeting us by chance anymore. They're doing it because we matter."

Hana stared at him. "Are you saying... this is personal?"

Zayan nodded. "And I think I know why."

Scene 5: The Scar Beneath the Uniform

Later, in the quiet of the barracks, Zayan sat on his cot, staring at a photo in his hand—him with his old unit. Five men. Only two still alive.

Hana entered softly. "You never talk about them."

Zayan didn't look up. "Because every time I do... I hear their screams again."

She sat beside him. "You carry too much alone."

"I have to."

"You don't."

For the first time, Zayan let the silence break him.

"I wasn't supposed to survive that ambush," he said. "But someone fed them our coordinates. Kareem was the last one to speak to us before we deployed."

Hana gasped. "He's been here... this whole time."

Zayan turned to her, eyes burning with the weight of truth.

"And I think he's about to do it again."
