Chapter 3 - Advanced Class?

I could tell by the way she looked at me—her body language made it obvious. Her head kept darting back and forth between me and the door. I couldn't let her run off, so I summoned the dagger and stabbed it into the front desk.

—THK!

"I want to register as an adventurer. Are you going to provide service or not?" I asked with a tone of slight frustration.

"Umm... S-sure... Just let me get the magical device..." she said and slowly stepped back.

"Why is she so afraid?" I sighed in exasperation.

"Well, you suddenly barged in wearing a strange outfit and stabbed a knife into the table. Who wouldn't be afraid of that?"

I was still pondering when I heard someone speak beside me. Subconsciously looking around, I found a girl with a "generous bosom," which was kind of weird, but for some reason, my attention was drawn to it.

Anyway, she had fair skin and blond wavy hair tied in a bun at the back. Her warm smile left an impression of maturity, enhanced by her revealing outfit: a white off-shoulder top and short jeans that showed her creamy legs.

She also had gold-colored eyes that sized me up. Despite the commotion I caused, she didn't seem hostile—as if she were used to it.

'This girl... I think I know her, but I can't remember,' I mumbled to myself, trying to recall her name. Although I remembered major characters in Konosuba and events, I couldn't recall anything unless something triggered a keyword.

"Hello, adventurer. My name is Luna. I'm a receptionist of the adventurer guild," she said. "Welcome to Axel Town. If you need anything, you can come see me later."

'Luna... Oh, that's her! 'Her brief introduction was all I needed to remember. Luna is the receptionist Kazuma dreams about—or probably uses as "material" for that kind of thing. It wasn't stated in the novel, but his behavior says enough.

"Okay, Lady Luna, if I need anything, I'll come to you later," I said. "Oh, by the way, has anyone with the class of Arch Priest joined recently?"

Although there was only a slim chance Kazuma had arrived earlier, I still needed confirmation. Things might have changed, so I had to make sure. If Aqua were here, I would have to avoid her at all costs.

"Arhm..." Luna's calm expression shifted into doubt.

'So that's how it is? 'I wasn't expecting much. "It's fine if you can't tell me. I just asked randomly."

"N-no, Mister Spectre," Luna immediately denied my suspicion, shaking her head desperately. "I'm not trying to hide anything from you; it's just..."

Cutting off her words, I decided to continue by guessing. "Arch Priest is a rare advanced class, right? So it's probably just rare to find one."

"Yes, that's it..." Luna nodded firmly. "But please don't lose hope, Mister Spectre. Although Arch Priests are rare, there are still other ways to heal wounds, so..."

"Heal wounds...? What are you talking about, Lady Luna?" I asked, raising an eyebrow.

"Don't you have wounds or scars? Is that why you're wearing that outfit?" she asked, dumbfounded.

"Oh?" I lightly smacked my forehead at her misunderstanding. I sighed in exasperation and cleared it up. "Lady Luna, I'm not wearing this mask to hide scars. It suits my fighting style and class."

"Is that so? I apologize for the misunderstanding then," she said, lowering her head in shame.

"It's fine. Anyway, it looks like the magical device is here," I said, dismissing the topic.

The previous staff member returned. Compared to earlier, she looked more composed, probably having calmed down after stepping away.

From what I remembered, I just needed to place my hand on the magical device for my information to be recorded. With Luna assisting her, everything went smoothly.

"…This is…" Luna murmured, staring at the results. "Your stats are above average—especially your luck. But…"

"But what?" I asked.

"It's about your class…" she said, looking at me with concern.

"…Is there something wrong with it?"

"Yes… uhm. For some reason, your class was automatically set. And apparently, it's a rare advanced class."

"What!? A rare advanced class!? Is he an arch priest!?"

"What!? Arch Priest!"

"Tell me about it!"

Her sudden revelation drew attention. People stopped what they were doing and gathered around us, forming a circle out of curiosity.

"That's right... Actually, the Assassin class is an advanced form of Thief, which is part of the standard classes. But the number of people with the advanced Assassin class is almost zero," she said, staring at me regretfully.

Luna lowered her head, offering an apology. "I'm sorry. There might be a problem with the device. Normally, you can freely select your class, but for some reason, yours was set by default. On top of that, while you have an advanced class, the skills you can learn are limited to Thief, which is a class below yours."

It wasn't surprising. Adventurers can learn skills from different classes, but the effectiveness is greatly reduced compared to the original class. For example, a thief could learn explosion magic, but its power might not even reach a quarter of what an archmage could do.

"Raise your head, Lady Luna," I said, tapping her shoulder. "You don't have to make a fuss over something so trivial."

"...?" She was slightly taken aback, but I continued.

"I originally wanted to learn skills related to Thief, but my fighting style doesn't involve scouting. So even if I don't have access to exclusive Assassin skills, it's not a problem. I can still learn basic magic and teleportation, right? As long as I have enough points. That's all I need," I said, trying to reassure her.

What I said was true. Kazuma used elementary magic but still managed to fight strong foes. This means the world isn't ruled by those with the highest skills, but by those who can use them effectively. Besides, I needed teleportation. Even if my mana only allowed me to use it one to three times, it was still valuable—especially since my stealth skill doesn't require mana.

From this incident, I learned something else: skills from my cheat don't appear on my adventurer card.

"I-I see... Thank you, Mister Spectre."

"By the way, Miss Luna, I can take a quest now, right?" I asked, handing over the registration fee.

"Ah, yes." She nodded. "Once we finish the paperwork, you can take any quest you like."

The curious adventurers dispersed one after another, which actually felt good. I disliked being the center of attention. I didn't wait long—once the paperwork was complete, I chose the classic: the Frog Elimination quest.

I already knew their weakness thanks to the novel. Even if they tried to swallow me whole, my outfit was reinforced with metal, so they would spit me out instantly. Other than stinking, there was no real danger. Even if things got desperate, I could cut my way out before suffocating.

I took the quest slip and left after completing registration.

The guild was still murmuring behind me. Although it was nothing special, the appearance of one of the rarest classes alongside an arch priest was still worth talking about. I simply ignored them and continued on my way.
