Chapter 9 - - Lighting On Fire

The message from Tillie was long and filled with notes. It seemed that every class she attended today was listed here, along with her notes and the class names. Dirin looked at the notes while walking with Markus, who was taking in the buildings they were passing as they headed back to the Dorm.

The classes were all related to fire or something related to fire. The notes were detailed, even telling him the coldest a fire could be and something about a flash point. Tillie was studying fire seriously and was keeping her side of the deal as well.

With how things were going, Dirin would just need to do whatever training Tillie finds for fire at this rate and not do any studying himself. He was quite happy with how things were turning out for his first day here. He probably had more information than the majority of people already. Keith, Markus, Tillie, and now Ritchard were people whom he would have to collect information from faster. He would have to help them in return, of course, but he was more than willing to do that.

[Tillie]: "I suggest you take a Probability Application, Anima Collection, Life Energy, and Spirit Body. These classes will be available tomorrow but won't be available for the rest of the week. After, you should study by yourself on those topics for more information."

Dirin read the rest of the text and was surprised. Their deal had nothing to do with her creating his schedule. Though if he took these classes, he wouldn't be able to go to Blacksmithing with Markus tomorrow anyway.

[Dirin]: "Thank you! This helps a lot! I would've probably done other classes if you hadn't told me!"

[Tillie]: "Consider it thanks for agreeing to help me out when I need. I will be expecting you to meet up with me tomorrow morning at the Training field. I need to figure some things out and will need your opinion."

Dirin wondered what she needed help with that couldn't have been one over text, but then he realized how early Probability Application started, which made him wonder how early he was supposed to wake up.

After asking here, Dirin found out he needed to be there by six, which left him an hour before having to head to his class. "Markus, I won't be able to go to class with you."

Markus looked over at Dirin with more confusion than disappointment. "I need to take these classes tomorrow or else I won't be able to take them for about a week." Dirin showed him the text about the classes, and Markus nodded.

"When you're free, will you come with me then?" Markus asked as he looked at the dates and times that Blacksmithing would be taught and then showed them to Dirin.

Dirin took a look at the dates and tried to figure out if he would be able to go. It wasn't a necessary class for him since Markus was already taking it, so he would get the information regardless, but he did need to do the actual work to be considered training.

After setting a date, they finally got back to the Dorm where Keith was lazily lying on the sofa with the TV on, watching a cartoon for kids. He looked thoroughly entertained as he was watching and didn't even notice that they finally came back.

Dirin took out his phone and took a video while Markus went over to tell him they were back. Keith, after seeing Dirin with his phone out, scrambled to him, trying to take the phone away. Dirin stood behind the dining table and kept his distance from Keith for a long time before he gave up.

After that, they all sat at the dining table. "What classes are you guys taking tomorrow?" Dirin asked as he was writing things down on a piece of paper.

They only had what classes were available this week, but thanks to Tillie, Dirin knew what classes weren't going to be available next week. How she knew this, Dirin didn't know, and he wasn't going to ask since he was currently benefitting from it.

Keith was looking over the list of classes and was struggling to find anything that could help him with his training other than things that were either too general or would be s stretch to consider them useful to him. "Maybe there is like a self-study class?" Markus said as he checked the list and map to see if he could find anything.

After a little bit, Markus pointed at a room on the map while also pointing. "This room seems like a class where it counts as one of the three, can be done multiple times a day, and you can study whatever you want. You will be monitored, though, if you do go there. So, don't do anything bad."

"I guess it would make sense that they have something for individual training and a class for individual study," Keith muttered to himself. "I'll have that as a backup, for now, though, I'll keep looking for classes that I can go to besides that."

Keith kept looking at the classes himself, since Markus and Dirin already had their classes planned out. Keith couldn't find anything, so he decided to spend two of his classes in individual study while doing one of the broader classes as his last class for the day.

Later that night, Dirin went over everything he learned today. He was going to meditate for magic soon after sorting everything out. He had a bunch of text on his phone for things to study, and he had that sheet from Elemental Basics.

He spent the rest of the time reading the notes that Ritchard had on each weapon he already knew, and the notes that Tillie took from the classes that she attended, along with some things she researched.

Dirin then spent the rest of the night meditating for practice before he went to sleep.

In the morning, Dirin went towards the training field, which was like the Weapons Training except much bigger and with concrete walls around it as well. Tillie stood towards the wall, while there were a couple of barrels on the ground, while she held a lighter in her hand.

"We are setting things on fire today. I want to see what can burn and what can't. Then I'm going to research why it can't and what I can do to make it burn." Tillie explained rather briefly before setting some things down, like wood, water, leaves, and concrete.

"I'm pretty sure you already know that wood and leaves burn. Concrete shouldn't be able to burn as well, and I am more than confident that you can find out why it doesn't burn." Dirin explained as she started to set things up.

"Can you fill this up with the water in that barrel?" Tillie asked as she pointed to a barrel on the left while handing him a flask.

Dirin took the flask and went over to the barrel as Tillie set things up with the concrete slab and the wood and leaves. "Did you enchant that to make it lighter?" Dirin asked as he saw how easily she was carrying the concrete. Unless Tillie had some hidden muscle he wasn't seeing, then it had to be enchanted.

"Yes. I spent quite a sum of money to enchant this thing to make it easier. Otherwise, I would've brought a wheelbarrow, or I would have had you do it instead." She set it down next to the wood as she went over to the other barrel and poured what smelled like lighter fluid into another flask.

She poured the Lighter fluid on the leaves and the wood, but she left the concrete untouched. "We already know that wood and leaves can burn, so why are you putting lighter fluid on them?"

"These leaves and wood are special." She lit a match and tossed it onto the leaves and wood.

The lighter fluid lit up and started to burn as it spread to the rest of the fluid all over the wood and leaves. Dirin suspected that the leaves would burn first, but for some reason, the wood caught fire first without the help of the lighter fluid, while the leaves remained the same. "How?" Dirin couldn't help but ask as he saw the display.

"Special leaves and wood. I told you, didn't I? One of the ways to make things burn is to choose what you are burning. We can make a bet based on whether the concrete will burn if you want to."

Dirin had high hopes of thinking that the concrete wouldn't burn, but after stealing another glance at the leaves, which still weren't burning, he made up his mind. "Okay. Deal. I bet the concrete will bu-"

"I bet the concrete won't burn." Tillie interrupted him, which caused Dirin to doubt what his guess was. He was about to lose this bet, and we didn't want to lose even though there was nothing on the line.

"I also think it won't burn." Dirin changed his answer immediately after some thought.

"That's no fun. You can't change your answer." Tillie glared at him as she was about to light another match.

"You can change your answer as well if you want," Dirin said with a smug smile as he looked at her. It wasn't a serious bet, so he didn't mind breaking the rules at all.

"Fine. I bet it burns." Tillie said as she tossed the match onto the concrete, making it light on fire immediately, making Dirin's mouth fall open.

"HOW?!" Dirin couldn't hide his confusion as he looked at the concrete slab turn black and shrivel as the fire started to burn it. "This isn't possible! Concrete can't burn! You didn't even put lighter fluid on it, and if you did, it still wouldn't burn!"

A smile appeared on Tillie's face as she saw him pointing and freaking out over the concrete. She laughed a bit as she went over to grab the water. "Now it's time for our next subject." She placed it down on the ground and started to light a match.
