Victoria sat across her computer staring at the information on it. Daniel and Mabel had gone public. She wasn't surprised. She just felt foolish. She didn't even know how she would tell her parents when they arrived.
Thinking of this, her parents hadn't called her in a while now. She suspected they hadn't heard the news else her mother would be the first to return back.
A knock on the door interrupted her train of thought. " Come in " she said lazily leaning on her chair.
Her office door pushed open reviling her secretary. "Good morning ma'am. We have a meeting in 20 minutes."
"Okay I'll be there in 10 minutes"
"Okay"
She sighed. She couldn't understand her emotions today. Usually she doesn't mix work and personal life together but this engagement came unexpected. She didn't expect things to turn out this Way. She taught she was over this phase, but since the public opinion keeps on going she's left plunged in her thoughts. Her parents hadn't even heard the news. They've been away for two months now due to her brothers illness. He had undergone a heart surgery and the last she heard from them was before her supposed engagement.
As if she knew she was being thought of, her mother's call came in.
Answering the phone "Hey mum"
"Hi baby, how are you?"
"I'm okay mum. How's dad and Owen?"
"They're both okay"
"Nice how was the surgery?"
"Oh dear it was okay and successful. We'll be back soon."
"Okay" she said awkwardly
"Anything you want to tell mum? And before I forget how was the engagement party?"
"About that. Mum the....."
"Ma'am the doctor wants see you" a nurse said from behind her interrupting what Victoria was about to say.
"Baby, I'll call you back okay. Do take care of yourself" her mum said.
"Okay mum. You too."
Hanging up the call she sighed. She didn't know how are parents are gonna react to the News, but she trusts they're going to support her no matter what.
She stood up, picked up her tablet and her personal journal. She left for the boardroom.
Few hours later.
She walked out of the conference room alongside the business partner. 'I'm glad you liked our proposal. We look forward to working with you,' Victoria said, shaking his hand.
"'As do I,' he replied with a smile."
She saw him off the to the elevator, turning to head back to her office.
Getting there she sent a text to her best friend Ann.
"Hey! In for lunch this afternoon?" Some seconds passed
"Yeah. Let me round up my morning evaluation I'll come over. Or are we going out to some fancy eatery?"
"Yeah. There's this new Cafe down town would like to go try them out"
"Okay sounds fun to me. See you in 10"
"Okay" she dropped her phone. Leaning backwards she closed her eyes.
"Ding" her phone vibrated
Sitting upright she picked it up, only to see a notification from Denise.
"Available for lunch together?"
She exhaled softly. He sure isn't backing down she thought to herself. Starring at the message once more, she typed away.
"No. I'm not. Have a lunch date with Ann. I'm sorry I'll have to turn down your request."
"Ouch! Hearing you say the word no hits like a jab to the heart. But no worries. There's always a next time."
"..."
"I'll make it up to you tomorrow. How does that sound"
"Perfect tomorrow then. Don't bail on me okay?"
"Okay" Victoria texted back. Dropping her phone one more, her mind was in a haze. Thinking back they'd never really done stuff couples really did.
For instance her birthdays for the last years they dated he had never taken her out of her birthday. Then outings. The only event they attended as a couple was business related events and family events. Thinking back they'd weren't much of a couple. Good thing it was over. She exhaled. She wasn't really happy in the relationship not that she cared. He wasn't all bad either. Oh well this is practically medicine after death.
Ding– her phone vibrated
"Done meet me down stairs" It was Ann.
She quickly tidied up her office. Immediately she got down, she saw Annabelle...
"Hey Babes what's up" Ann asked as Victoria hopped in.
"I'm good."
"Nice.. so, what's the name of that new Cafe you talked about?"
" Oh it's called The Dens"
"What a weird name to name a cafe"
"I guess so. Heaed from my secretary they sell good pastries and chocolate cake. You know how much I love chocolate."
"Okay... Location?" She ask with her brow's raised
"Oh yeah, we head south like I said it's down town. I think about half and hour drive there."
"If you say so." Ann replied stepping on the accelerator.
Fourty-five minutes later.
Ann pulled over slowly navigating to the packing lot. "So much for a 30minutes drive" Ann jabbed.
"Come on I just predicted, not my fault" they both stepped out of the car. Heading inside the found a nice spot. Not so far from the door not too close either. Just perfect. They both settled in, a waitress walked up to them.
"Good day Ladies, welcome to The Dens. What can I offer you." She said handing them the menu.
"I'll go for a mocha and your signature dessert" Victoria said.
She turned to Annabelle.
"I'll have a..." she said her eya scanning the menu. Gotcha. She raised her eyes to the waitress, "I'll have a latte and strawberry shortcakes."
The waitress too down their orders and left.
"So Missy..." Ann said focusing her attention on Victoria.
"What's the deal with that Denis guy the last time?"
"Can we not..."
"Don't give me that crap" Ann cuts her off leaning her back on the chair while she folds her arms. "Spill the beans missy. No excuses"
"Fine I met him in a business event. He has actually helped me out when Daniel was out doing God knows what. He had asked for my digits and I gave him. Well he said he wanted it so he could be sure I was home safely and that's how we started talking. Along the line he developed feelings for me and he asked me out but...."
The waitress came with their orders interrupting Victoria's story.
"Thanks" They both muttered.
"So back to your story."
"Oh yeah I turned him down" she replied taking a bit off her cake. "Hmmm this is heaven" she relished the taste over and over again. Curiosity got the best of Ann she digged into hers totally forgetting what Victoria said.
With her Ann's attention on the food Victoria changed the topic. "Owens surgery was successful"
"Oh my goodness, really"
"Yeah they'll be back as soon as he's perfectly okay"
"Awwn can't wait to see him" Ann blushed."
"Come off it Ann that's my elder brother we're talking about. Erase those thoughts"
Ann pouted "so what if he's your bro, am I not allowed to crush on him. And besides he's in good health now. I could be your sister in-law soon." She giggled taking a bit off her cake.
Victoria rolled her eyes "till then."
They both chatted till it was time to head out.
"My new favorite Cafe." Ann said with enthusiasm.
"Me too" Victoria said.
"The only problem is the distance. But I don't care I'll come regardless."
Victoria giggled "classic Ann." They both chuckled entering the car and driving off.
Forty minutes later.
Victoria arrived in her office getting busy with work once again.
It was exactly 5:30pm when she heard a knock on her office door.
