Chapter 527: The Miracle Brought Forth By Your Love
"A war against an entire empire..." Makarov sighed heavily, pacing the room. "Based on the intelligence Mest gathered, the Alvarez Empire commands a standing army of hundreds of thousands. And with Zeref as its Emperor, he undoubtedly has an inner circle of incredibly powerful mages at his disposal. A full-scale invasion... this truly is the worst-case scenario."
Makarov had initially debated whether he should even share this grim hypothesis with Noah. The burden of anticipating a continent-spanning war was crushing, and he had considered shouldering the anxiety alone.
But he quickly realized that hiding it from Noah was pointless. Noah had been heavily involved in every major event that led to this hypothesis. With Noah's absurd intellect, he likely would have connected the dots on his own eventually. It was far more tactical to bring him in early so they could prepare together. Noah's meticulous, paranoid planning had already saved the guild countless times.
"No, Grandpa. You're wrong," Noah stated calmly, leaning against the containment field's console. "This isn't the worst-case scenario."
Makarov and Mavis both stopped and stared at him in utter disbelief. Fighting a unified, continent-spanning empire led by the most terrifying dark mage in history wasn't the worst-case scenario?!
"We've already survived the worst-case scenario," Noah pointed out matter-of-factly.
"What do you mean?" Makarov asked, his brow furrowing.
"Acnologia," Noah replied. "Acnologia attacking Tenrou Island was the absolute, definitive worst-case scenario. Compared to that, fighting Alvarez is just a logistical inconvenience."
"How can you possibly say that?" Mavis asked, floating closer.
"Because I've fought both of them," Noah explained, holding up two fingers. "Well, technically I only fought Acnologia, but I've stood face-to-face with Zeref and sensed his magical output. Based on the hard data, I can definitively state that Zeref is absolutely no match for Acnologia in a direct confrontation."
Makarov and Mavis's expressions tightened. They listened intently. Noah was the only person alive who had directly interacted with both apocalyptic anomalies and lived to tell the tale. His combat assessment was invaluable.
"Zeref's magical capacity is undeniably vast, and his mastery of the arcane is absolute. But fundamentally, he is still a human mage. His physical constitution—while immortal—is relatively fragile. Acnologia, on the other hand, possesses near-absolute magical immunity. Zeref's spells, no matter how complex or dark, would be functionally useless against the Dragon's scales.
"Even if Zeref somehow managed to bypass the immunity, his physical strength is severely lacking. He simply doesn't possess the kinetic output required to physically damage Acnologia. Conversely, a single physical swipe or Roar from Acnologia would completely obliterate Zeref's body. Zeref would be forced to rely entirely on his Curse of Ankhseram to infinitely regenerate from the fatal damage, trapping him in an endless cycle of agonizing death and rebirth while he desperately tries to flee. If those two fought a deathmatch, Zeref would be physically pulverized. The only reason he'd 'survive' is because the universe literally won't let him die."
Noah lowered his hand. "Now, apply that logic to the Alvarez Empire. Even if Zeref has an inner circle of elite mages, their individual combat strength cannot possibly exceed his own. If Zeref can't scratch Acnologia, his army is completely irrelevant. A million mages casting a million spells simultaneously would do absolutely zero damage to a beast with absolute magical immunity.
"In terms of sheer, apocalyptic combat effectiveness, Acnologia—a single entity—vastly outclasses the entire Alvarez Empire combined.
"That is why Acnologia was the worst-case scenario. And yet, when faced with that absolute despair, we survived without losing a single member.
"Therefore, the prospect of fighting the Alvarez Empire doesn't scare me. We have time. With every passing day, our guild grows stronger. And you know perfectly well that I will have spent that time stockpiling an absurd amount of countermeasures. So, don't stress yourselves out over an empire. We'll be perfectly fine," Noah concluded with a supremely confident smile.
Hearing Noah's incredibly logical, pragmatic breakdown, Makarov couldn't help but chuckle. The crushing weight of anxiety lifting from his chest.
"Alright. If you require any specific resources or funding to prepare these countermeasures, just ask. The guild will fully support you," Makarov declared solemnly.
"This guild is my home, Grandpa. As the future Fourth Master, protecting it is my job. Don't worry. I'll make sure we're just as prepared for Alvarez as we were for Acnologia," Noah promised.
"I will also assist you. My strategic processing capabilities are at your disposal," Mavis offered with a bright smile.
"That would actually be incredible, First Master. Having you run the tactical combat simulations while I focus on the structural engineering will save me months of work," Noah said, genuinely thrilled. Mavis's mind was practically a supercomputer when it came to tactical analysis.
With the geopolitical threats addressed, Noah turned his attention back to Fairy Heart.
He recalibrated his sensory equipment, adjusting the localized field to begin a deep-tissue magical scan of the crystal and the body within.
Since Mavis could channel a tiny sliver of magic while inside the chamber, Noah took a few minutes to teach her how to solidify her spectral form. Because her current state was functionally identical to a Thought Projection, the mechanics for granting a projection mass applied to her as well.
Mavis, being a peerless genius, grasped the concept instantly. However, solidifying a spectral form required a continuous, substantial drain of magic. Given the minuscule trickle of magic she received from her body, she could only manage to solidify the very tip of her right index finger.
"If someone walked in here and couldn't see your spectral body, all they'd see is a severed, disembodied fingertip floating in the air. That's horrifying," Noah deadpanned.
"Stop it! You're creeping me out!" Mavis shivered, immediately dropping the spell and letting her finger turn translucent again.
Noah chuckled. He then waved his hand, pulling dozens of large, heavy storage crates from his spatial pocket and stacking them against the cavern wall.
"These crates contain the entirety of Precht's physical research logs regarding Fairy Heart and the Devil's Heart. Regardless of his descent into darkness, the man was a brilliant researcher. Reviewing his decades of trial and error will save me an immense amount of time," Noah explained, walking over to the crates and pulling out a thick binder of notes.
He casually flipped through the pages while simultaneously monitoring the diagnostic scans running on the crystal.
Suddenly, Noah stopped. He stared intently at a specific page in Precht's log, his eyes widening slightly. He slapped his forehead.
"First Master. I completely forgot to mention a crucial detail I discovered during my preliminary review of these logs," Noah said, his tone turning incredibly serious.
"What is it?" Mavis floated over, sensing his sudden shift in demeanor. Makarov also stepped closer.
"First Master... you were pregnant," Noah stated plainly.
"Wh-What...?" Mavis froze completely, her spectral eyes widening in utter shock.
"E-Excuse me...? Can you... repeat that? How... how could I...?" She stammered, her voice trembling violently. She couldn't process the words.
"I said: First Master, you were pregnant. You had a child," Noah repeated calmly.
"Noah, are you absolutely certain? I've never heard a word of this!" Makarov gasped, looking at Noah in profound shock.
"This... this has to be a mistake. It's impossible," Mavis muttered, clutching her head in confusion. She had absolutely zero memory of ever being pregnant.
"Precht's archives are massive. When I showed you the logs upstairs, I only provided a highly condensed summary. Take a look at these specific medical logs," Noah pulled a thick folder from the crate and handed it to Mavis. He pulled out a secondary copy and handed it to Makarov.
Mavis snatched the folder, her eyes frantically scanning the aged parchment. Makarov read over his copy with equal intensity.
As they flipped through the pages, their expressions morphed violently. Mavis's face cycled through profound confusion, absolute shock, sheer disbelief, momentary joy, and finally, terrifying panic.
"The medical telemetry data clearly indicates the presence of a second, distinct life-force signature developing within your womb. The first recorded instance of this secondary signature occurs shortly after Precht sealed you inside the stasis lacrima to begin his restorative treatments.
"Furthermore, the subsequent logs meticulously track the development of this secondary life-force for exactly nine months before the signature abruptly vanishes. The only logical conclusion is that you successfully carried a child to term while in stasis, and Precht surgically extracted the infant," Noah explained clinically.
"Zeref..." Mavis whispered, her hands trembling violently as she clutched the medical logs.
Given the timeline, there was only one possible father.
"But... but that's impossible! We never... we didn't do that! How could I possibly be pregnant?!" Mavis stammered, her spectral cheeks flushing a deep, embarrassed red. "We only shared a single kiss! And then the curse immediately triggered! I was dying! How could a child have been conceived?!"
Her voice dropped to an embarrassed whisper, but Noah and Makarov heard her clearly.
"Biology aside, the hard data proves that a child was conceived and carried to term," Noah pointed at the medical charts in her hands.
"But it doesn't make any sense..." Mavis mumbled, staring blankly at the parchment.
"First Master, you literally just explained the mechanics of this anomaly to me," Noah said gently.
"The absolute root of all magic is Love. Love can forge unparalleled tragedies, but it can also manifest absolute miracles.
"Your love for Zeref triggered the ultimate contradiction of your curses, resulting in the tragedy of your 'death.'
"However... that same, profound love also forced a miracle into existence. The child you conceived in that fleeting moment... is the physical manifestation of the miracle brought forth by your love."
Mavis stopped trembling. She stared down at the intricate, hand-drawn medical diagrams depicting the tiny fetus developing within her stasis-locked womb.
"A miracle... brought forth by our love...?" she whispered softly, her eyes welling with tears.
"Yes," Noah confirmed.
"But... where is my child?! What happened to him?!" Mavis suddenly snapped her head up, pure, panicked maternal instinct overriding everything else. She had accepted the impossible reality of her pregnancy, but the realization that her child was missing terrified her.
"I have absolutely no idea. Precht never mentioned a child when he showed me Lumen Histoire," Makarov shook his head, looking incredibly troubled. This entire revelation was completely new to him.
Mavis froze in horror.
"There are no records regarding the child's fate after the extraction. Precht documented the biological development flawlessly, but the moment the nine-month term ended, any mention of the child completely vanished from the archives," Noah stated, gesturing to the massive pile of crates.
Mavis practically dove into the crates. She frantically used her faint magic to levitate stacks of documents, desperately speed-reading through thousands of pages of Precht's meticulous notes, searching for a single clue.
"If the child survived, he would be exactly one year younger than Grandpa Makarov. He would be 88 years old today," Noah noted quietly.
Mavis's spectral form shuddered violently, but she didn't respond. She just kept reading, faster and faster, her panic mounting.
Noah didn't interrupt her. He turned back to the console and resumed his diagnostic analysis of the crystal.
Makarov finished reading his copy of the medical logs and placed them gently on the table. He stepped away from the crystal, staring blankly at the cavern wall, completely lost in thought as he tried to process the monumental implications of what they had just discovered.
The chamber fell into a heavy, oppressive silence, broken only by the soft hum of Noah's diagnostic equipment and the frantic rustling of paper as Mavis tore through the archives.
Hours passed.
"There's nothing... he didn't write anything about where the baby went..." Mavis whispered, her voice hollow and defeated. The levitated papers fluttered harmlessly to the floor.
She stood frozen, staring blankly at the scattered documents. Knowing that Precht had eventually descended into total darkness and formed Grimoire Heart... a terrifying, horrifying thought crept into her mind.
Did Precht... dispose of my baby? she thought, her spectral body beginning to tremble violently with absolute, paralyzing dread.
