Chapter 66 - Chapter 66: Astral Plasma Escort Mission!

"Do you want him to become a top-class Jujutsu sorcerer?"

"Him? He's just a kid. He's not qualified."

"Then I'll make him a first-grade Jujutsu sorcerer."

"Let Yaga be the one to tell him."

This conversation took place among the higher-ups of the Jujutsu world after James exorcised a Special Grade Cursed Spirit.

It sounded ridiculous—and it was. Even though they knew James could easily wipe out their elite teams, they still looked down on him and dismissed his strength as insignificant.

Ordinary people would probably assume this kind of setup would lead to the classic trope—talk big, get slapped down. But James genuinely hadn't thought about it like that. If he had, he might've tried learning the infamous smug smile technique just for fun.

The real reason for that conversation was simple: the higher-ups in the Jujutsu world were truly something else.

Their greatest hits included—but weren't limited to—convicting Gojo Satoru out of fear, sacrificing their own people for personal gain, and being, frankly, less competent than the average janitor.

Thinking about it, James couldn't help but feel a little sorry for the Jujutsu world.

"Hello, one mocha please. Thank you."

Sitting in a quiet café on the streets of Shibuya, Tokyo, James looked out at the bustling world beyond the window while holding three letters in his hand.

The first was from Yaga Masamichi, informing him that he'd officially been promoted to a first-grade Jujutsu sorcerer.

The second was from Geto Suguru, congratulating him—Gojo Satoru had scribbled his name in the corner as well.

The third was from Ieiri Shōko, asking him to return to campus quickly because she'd made progress in the Reverse Cursed Technique.

He set Geto's letter aside.

Gojo Satoru's current cocky personality was due to the fact that he hadn't been beaten enough yet—though that wasn't quite true. Gojo did become stronger after suffering, but it had taken Geto's eventual betrayal for him to finally learn restraint.

As for the letter from Yaga…

James tossed it straight into the trash can.

"First-grade Jujutsu sorcerer, huh."

He took a sip of mocha, paused, then slowly put down the cup with a grimace. He still wasn't used to the taste of coffee. So much for trying to look cool.

He felt nothing but contempt for the Jujutsu higher-ups. As a leader, if you couldn't gain trust through strength, then you should lead with virtue. Clearly, that bunch had neither.

Time to take a break.

Still, it was about time to return. The main storyline would begin soon, and his strength wasn't quite where it needed to be. He set a small goal for himself: double his combat power before Gojo Satoru mastered the Reverse Technique.

"Waiter, check please."

---

Life remained peaceful. James rarely left the campus unless assigned to a mission. Over time, Jujutsu High School's campus grew so quiet it felt as though no one even lived there anymore.

At the end of 2005, both Gojo Satoru and Geto Suguru were sent out on separate missions—each eliminating a Special Grade Cursed Spirit on their own.

By early 2006, they had officially become first-grade sorcerers.

Mid-2006 saw their reputation as an invincible tag team soar, thanks to their frequent joint missions.

And finally, in the fall of 2006, Jujutsu High School welcomed a new batch of students.

"Yohoo! James, today's the day the new students arrive. Aren't you coming to meet them?"

Gojo Satoru slung his arm around James's shoulder and grinned. Suguru Geto was calmer and pulled Gojo aside.

Time flew by. Nearly a year had passed since the four of them enrolled at Jujutsu High. During that time, they each went their separate ways, rarely reuniting.

"Today's one of those rare days we're all together. Don't ruin the vibe," Geto said, brushing his bangs aside.

"You two idiots can scram. James and I will take over. You'll only scare the new kids," Shōko said, waving them off like flies.

"Shōko, you wound me when you say things like that!"

Gojo pulled out his sunglasses and slipped them on dramatically.

James, sitting under the shade of a tree with a book in hand, glanced up at the trio, then pulled out his phone to check the date.

Sophomore year of high school, 2006—that meant the Star Plasma Vessel mission was coming up soon.

"…Hold up. Why do our juniors look older than us?!"

Gojo shouted, pointing at the approaching figure. Geto stared too, dumbfounded. Only Shōko remained calm.

Descending the stone steps was a tall woman with long, snow-white hair that veiled her eyes.

"Am I being slandered already?"

Her elegant, intellectual voice gave off a great first impression—until she ruined it herself.

"You can slander me if you want, but you'll have to pay."

"This is Mei Mei," Shōko explained. "She's a new part-time tutor invited by the school. You'll know why soon."

Yaga Masamichi appeared out of nowhere behind the group and approached Mei Mei without further explanation. The two began negotiating over her pay, arguing back and forth about "rate increases" and "absolutely not."

"Here they come!"

Two teenage boys came walking up, supporting each other. One had golden hair and a calm, steady aura. The other had black bowl-cut hair and a bright, cheerful smile.

Nanami Kento and Haibara Yu had arrived.

Before Gojo and Geto could get involved, James stepped in and guided them away. After all, he was the only normal person at this school.

"This is your dorm. That's the classroom, though it's mostly just symbolic. That building over there is where Principal Yaga lives. Talk to him if you need anything."

He went on to explain the current state of Jujutsu High.

"There aren't many students per grade. Most Jujutsu sorcerers in Japan are still trained within their family lineages. There are only two official Jujutsu schools in the country."

"Have you been exposed to Jujutsu before?"

---

Maybe James had a natural knack for teaching. He had led the Pillars in the Demon Slayer world, mentored Shido and Hikari in the main world, and now, here he was again—guiding newcomers in Jujutsu Kaisen.

About an hour later, after giving them basic guidance, James received a text message from Yaga Masamichi.

"Principal Yaga, you wanted to see me?"

"There's a mission," Yaga replied, handing him a stack of documents.

James flipped through the papers. It was an assessment mission involving Iori Utahime—a former Tokyo student who later became a teacher at Kyoto Jujutsu High School.

"Let the new tutor handle it. She's clearly got time."

James rejected the request without hesitation. This mission marked the beginning of a significant arc, but he had no interest in deviating from the original timeline.

"She's asking for too much money," Yaga muttered.

"I'm not cheap either. But she's worth it."

James waved him off and turned to leave, while Yaga stood in silence, unsure how to respond.

Yaga sighed.

This year's student batch was filled with time bombs. Gojo was reckless, Geto was two-faced, and James—while capable—had started taking on fewer and fewer missions. Complaints from the higher-ups were beginning to surface.

"…Maybe I should resign…"

A thought Yaga couldn't quite shake.

---

One month later, Gojo Satoru and Geto Suguru were dispatched to support Utahime and Mei Mei on their mission.

Several days later, they returned to campus with Mei Mei in tow. Just as things were calming down again, James—who had been meditating in solitude—was interrupted by a new transfer order.

"Astral Plasma Escort Mission!"
