On the other side, Ash was also facing three Kabuto and one Kabutops.
His Ivysaur had small, self-made grass shoes bound to its four feet, which essentially gave it a simplified version of Grassy Terrain right from the start.
Besides giving it the effect of standing on grassland, it had none of the other functions Grassy Terrain was supposed to have.
But this was enough.
Ash swept his thumb through the air. "Ivysaur, use Grassy Glide!"
"Saur!"
Ivysaur's body was enveloped in a brilliant green light as it shot forward like a shockwave. With extreme speed, it instantly sent the three smaller Kabuto flying, giving the enemy no time to think.
Well, the floor was a bit slippery.
"Tchah!"
Seeing this, the leader Kabutops swiftly brandished its scythes in a wide sweep, attempting to slash Ivysaur away.
"Saur!"
At an uncanny angle, Ivysaur, cloaked in its green, shockwave-like aura, instantly reversed course, narrowly dodging the vicious slash.
Under the effects of Grassy Glide, its speed and reaction time had received a terrifying boost, making it comparable to Pikachu's Quick Attack.
"Again, use Grassy Glide!" A corner of Ash's mouth lifted as he launched another attack.
This move wasn't like Fake Out, which had the restriction of only being usable upon entering the battle. It was a priority move that could be used indefinitely.
"Saur!"
As it changed direction, Ivysaur pushed off the ground, once again cloaked in green light as it shot forward.
"Tchah-hiss!!"
This time, the Kabutops was no longer on the defensive. It lowered its center of gravity, held its large scythes before it, and a stream of blue water suddenly manifested from thin air. The water enveloped its body in a spiral, and with a push of its hind legs, the Kabutops rode the current and shot toward its target.
Aqua Jet!!
Like Grassy Glide, this move was also a priority move, and it was incredibly fast!
"Swoosh!"
"Swoosh!"
The green shockwave and the blue, spiraling current collided head-on. The force of the impact, accompanied by a surge of dense Grass-type and Water-type energy, set off a powerful explosion that spread outwards.
"So strong..."
Ash slightly pressed down on his hat, which was being ruffled by the blast wave. He thought to himself that these Prehistoric Pokémon were truly formidable, able to reach such a level even with less than half of their strength remaining.
Immediately, a new flame ignited in his eyes as he shouted:
"Then that's all the more reason we can't lose to it! Continue using Grassy Glide!!"
"Tchah-hiss!!"
Feeling the green light rushing at it again, the Kabutops endured the draining strain on its body, its eyes bloodshot, as it once more stirred up a spiral of water and charged forward.
"Boom!!"
"Boom!!"
The green light and the water current repeatedly clashed, separated, and in an instant, flashed to another location to collide again!
"Boom! Boom!!"
"Boom! Boom!!"
In less than a few seconds, they had already clashed head-on several times, and even the surrounding rock walls were beginning to tremble slightly.
"Saur!!"
Finally, the Ivysaur—blessed by the tortoise kings of the secret garden—proved to have greater stamina. After the seventh collision, its power gained the upper hand. The energy from Grassy Glide erupted, sending the Kabutops flying.
"Clang!!"
Kabutops's entire body was thrown backward, only coming to a stop when it crashed into a rock wall, becoming embedded within it.
"Let's end this game! Ivysaur, use Sleep Powder!"
"Saur!"
Ivysaur shook its body, and a large cloud of dark green powder burst from the flower bud on its back, enveloping the Kabutops and the three Kabuto.
"Zzz..."
They had been disturbed from their sleep to begin with, and the aroma of the Sleep Powder was now extremely potent. In no time, the fossil Pokémon all closed their bloodshot eyes and fell into a deep slumber.
The violent, bloodthirsty aura suddenly dispersed, leaving only the ancient, timeless aura of antiquity.
"I choose you, Poké Ball!"
Ash's eyes lit up as he successively threw three Poké Balls, capturing the three Kabuto.
He then pulled a cool-looking, black-and-gold-trimmed special Poké Ball from his pocket and threw it at the Kabutops.
Even the light of its capture shimmered with an extravagant golden glow.
"Click."
Capture successful.
It was a Luxury Ball, a type of Poké Ball that increases the friendliness between a captured Pokémon and its Trainer. The logic being, if you let it live in a mansion, its affection will naturally keep rising.
This was a special Poké Ball that Ash had managed to get from the Silph Co. Building back in Saffron City, one that only the upper echelon had the right to use.
"Hehe... This way, if I go back to Pallet Town a few more times and talk to this Kabutops, maybe one day it'll join my team..."
This was his cunning little plan.
On the other side, Gary had also finished his battle, having resolved it without much effort using his Exeggutor.
But what was even more excessive, this kid was now holding four black-and-gold-trimmed Luxury Balls.
*Greed!*
Ash couldn't help but curse inwardly. He had only targeted the strongest Kabutops, but this guy actually wanted them all?
*What greed!*
"Not bad..."
"Heh heh..."
The two exchanged a look and a smile. To be able to take care of four Fossil Pokémon in such a short amount of time, it seemed neither of them was a small fry.
Looking at the Luxury Balls in each other's hands, they both chuckled. An unspoken understanding passed between them.
The misunderstanding was cleared.
They looked at each other. For today, there was a temporary truce; their targets were not each other.
"Pokédex, help me scan the surroundings and see how many life forms are here."
After a moment of thought, Gary took out his Pokédex and slowly gave it a command.
With this wild, prehistoric aura alone, no ordinary Pokémon would appear underground. Pokémon that liked to live in the middle layer of the earth, like Dugtrio or Sandshrew, would give this place a wide berth.
And those with a comparable aura, like Rhydon, wouldn't be staying underground in the first place.
This meant that any life form appearing in this deep cave right now was almost certainly a Fossil Pokémon!
Gary's Pokédex CPU began to run at high speed. After a moment, it emitted a notification in an electronic voice.
"Searching... Search complete. This was a god-tier play by me. Hehe."
Then, as if it had run out of battery, the Pokédex fell silent.
Ash: "?"
And then?
It makes a grand opening claim and then goes quiet to act like a pro?
"Beep. Beep. There are 13 in total. There are 2 at a distance of 8 meters ahead, 4 at a distance of 17 meters ahead..."
Finally, it was Ash's Pokédex that supplied the follow-up.
This was the first time Ash had ever felt that his Pokédex was so reliable.
It wasn't that it was particularly outstanding; it was simply good by comparison.
Even Gary's face darkened, and he couldn't help but pat his Pokédex, inwardly cursing it for being such an embarrassment.
Unexpectedly, his Pokédex emitted its electronic voice again.
"Anxious? Is someone getting anxious? Hehe."
Gary: "..."
Damn it!
Following the Pokédex's directions, the two indeed saw two freshly awakened Kabuto ahead, staring at them with the same bloodshot eyes.
"Ivysaur, use Vine Whip!"
"Exeggutor, use Hypnosis!"
Ash and Gary commanded simultaneously.
