[Using a sad story to shatter his last defensive walls and earn his favor. You are truly a monster.] Lyxor couldn't help but compliment.
'Shut up.'
Meanwhile, I remained silent while Master Zhang gazed at me with thoughtful eyes, patiently waiting for my response.
"It would be an honor," I said passionately, bowing deeply.
I could hear Master Zhang's laughter echo loudly with a hint of pride and excitement.
Slowly, I raised my head and watched the old man move over to the elevated platform, where he sat on the mat with both legs crossed.
"You know, if you had come into this training ground through other means, you would have met another tutor?" he asked, and I couldn't help but scratch my head in confusion.
"What?" I asked, and Master Zhang nodded with a smile.
It seemed there was something I didn't know about but should be aware of.
"The gates aren't heavy for a reason. It's a test with different answers," Master Zhang explained. "There are different methods one can use to enter this place. Your tutor is determined by the method you choose."
Saying this, Master Zhang turned to meet my gaze.
"You are the first kid to open that gate," he said with a smile. "My first and only student."
The last part sounded suspiciously sentimental, but I put aside my nasty thoughts and wore a smile.
"It's an honor," I lowered my head once again.
"It's nothing. Now take a seat, and I'll help you understand the basics." Master Zhang gestured towards a mat adjacent to his position.
Without hesitation, I rose to my feet and climbed the platform before sitting with my legs crossed.
"The introduction of Aetherium into our world did two things to the human body," Master Zhang began.
"It evolved our genes, granting each of us unique abilities, which are now known as guardian powers," he continued. "It also opened up humanity's energy pathways, allowing us to harness the natural energy spread across the world. This energy is called Qi."
Saying this, Master Zhang raised his hand. His veins bulged around his wrist as translucent energy manifested, completely shrouding his palm.
"Wow." I was stunned.
This energy was different—free from the nasty, Aetherium-infested energy I was used to. It was clear and pure.
"Can everyone learn martial arts?" I asked, and Master Zhang quickly shook his head.
"In the end, not everyone evolved properly. Their bodies can't harness this energy. If they could, then everyone who lacks abilities would be here in the dojo."
"I see." My voice was laced with disappointment.
If the reverse were the case, I would have created my army of martial arts soldiers to tear this country down. But it seems that's just a dream.
"When you said the method used to enter here determines the tutor you get, what's the difference between you and other tutors?" I couldn't help but ask.
Master Zhang seemed surprised I returned to that topic. He stroked his goatee twice before responding.
"There are killing arts, there are deception arts, there are weapon arts… Depending on your method, we can tell where your talent lies," Master Zhang explained.
"I see…" I muttered, my mind drifting a bit.
I couldn't help but wonder how Dylan entered this place, but remembering the sword he carried around, I suspected he was being taught by a weapon master.
"Now, let me teach you how to manifest your Qi," Master Zhang interrupted my train of thought.
"Yes, Master!" I said, promptly focusing on him, unsure of how to continue.
Master Zhang's voice, calm and measured, broke the silence.
"Qi is the life force that flows through all things, connecting you to the universe and its boundless energy. To manifest your Qi, you must first find stillness within."
Master Zhang paused, gazing at me intently. I nodded, and only then did he continue.
"Imagine a calm lake, undisturbed by wind or rain. Your mind must be like this lake—serene, clear, and reflective. As you breathe in, envision drawing energy from the earth beneath you, feeling its stability and strength. As you breathe out, release all tension and distractions, letting them dissolve into the air."
Watching Master Zhang move gracefully reminded me of Alex's effortless and unreal movements. Without hesitation, I began mimicking his hand motions.
Though rough, I was improving with each passing second.
"Place your hands gently on your knees, palms facing upward. This is a gesture of openness and receptivity. Allow your breath to become a bridge between your body and the energy around you.
Focus on the point just below your navel," he instructed. "This is your Dantian, the reservoir of your Qi. With each breath, visualize a warm, glowing light gathering here. Feel its warmth grow with every inhale, becoming brighter and more concentrated."
At this point, my eyes were shut tight as I followed Master Zhang's strangely distant voice. I felt hot, like a fire had been set ablaze within my belly.
"Remember, Qi is not something to be forced. It is a natural flow, like a river coursing through its path. Trust in your inner strength and let the energy find its way. As you meditate, surrender to the process. Be patient, be persistent, and above all, be attuned to the quiet power within you."
"In time, you will feel your Qi move, guiding you to greater clarity and strength. Embrace this journey with an open heart and a focused mind, and your inner power will manifest."
At this point, I couldn't even hear Master Zhang anymore. I was trapped in a dark yet peaceful world, and beneath me was a faint pulsating light. Though weak, it was slowly getting stronger with time.
Whether this was a dream or reality, I couldn't tell. However, one thing I noticed clearly was how peaceful and silent it was. I couldn't feel Lyxor's presence in my head.
"This place… I don't mind spending the rest of my life here," I muttered before looking beneath me.
The pulsating glow was slowly burning brighter than I imagined. It wasn't only growing—it was growing much faster than I expected.
