Classification: Tier Three in the Magic System
What a Patron God Is
Patron gods are cosmic entities tethered to a domain — a fundamental force, concept, or aspect of existence that exists outside the physical plane. Their scale, power, and cosmic nature make them incapable of direct interaction with the mortal world. Beings tethered to the totality and representation of death, arcana, karma, amongst others, cannot simply step into a world built to hold ordinary matter and ordinary consciousness without a vessel to translate that vastness into something the physical plane can contain.
This is the fundamental problem a Mawborn resolves.
What a Mawborn Is
A Mawborn is a human being chosen before birth by a patron god's cosmic signature to serve as that god's living conduit into the physical world. The choosing is not random, and it is not later; it is prenatal, a mark laid down before the vessel draws their first breath. What differs from Mawborn to Mawborn is when the choosing becomes evident. Some abilities manifest immediately, even in infancy (Ratelsi was born already bearing Oded's obsidian wings). Others may lie dormant for years, waiting on a triggering circumstance, a ritual, or simply time, before the connection makes itself physically known.
Once chosen, a Mawborn channels their patron's mana — not a larger personal reserve, but a categorically different kind of supply. Peculiar spellcasting draws on personal mana, used with effort and rest to replenish. Mawborn power originates outside the physical plane, is inexhaustible, and does not deplete. It does not "run out" because it isn't stored. It flows continuously from a source permanently anchored inside the vessel's body. To be a Mawborn is to be in a permanent state of extraordinary power.
PHYSICAL SIGNATURES
Mana Overflow. Because divine supply permanently exceeds what a human body is built to contain, excess mana leaks continuously from a Mawborn's pores. This is invisible to Peculiars and Normies alike — it can only be perceived by other Mawborns, who see it as glowing footprints or ambient, trailing residue marking the vessel's movement. A Mawborn is, quite literally, always leaving a trace of themselves in the world that ordinary eyes cannot register.
White Hair. Every known Mawborn carries this marker, regardless of their patron god's domain — Ratelsi's black-and-white streaked hair, Ryken's fully white brows and lashes, and brown-and-white streaked hair. It is the one universal, cross-domain signature of its nature, present whether the vessel is actively invoking their patron or not.
The Maw Seal. At the corners of the mouth, a seal appears, but only during invocation, not as a permanent brand. The mouth is chosen as the site of this signature for three overlapping reasons: it is the origin point of incantation (the activation mechanism for all spellcasting); it is the site of breath, the most fundamental marker of life; and for Mawborns, it is the literal threshold between the human and the divine — the point at which the patron god crosses from cosmic abstraction into physical expression. This stands in deliberate contrast to the Arcane Eye, which is imposed permanently from the outside as a tool of institutional classification. The Maw Seal emerges from within, and only by will and circumstance, as an identity chosen and enacted, not assigned and worn forever.
FULL EMBODIMENT AND THE RELATIONSHIP REQUIREMENT
Being chosen at birth grants a Mawborn access to their patron's power, but access is not mastery. To fully embody a patron god — to wear their cosmic signature completely, with intention and control rather than as an involuntary eruption — a Mawborn must build an actual relationship with the entity anchored inside them. This relationship is not standardized. It differs from Mawborn to Mawborn, shaped by temperament, circumstance, trauma, ritual, and time.
Two documented cases illustrate the opposite poles of this spectrum:
Ratelsi Ozias and Oded — a relationship built on suppression, fear, and involuntary surrender. Oded's presence in Ratelsi's mind has existed since birth, and he's held the seat of power in her subconscious before being buried under years of discipline. He speaks to her — mocking, patient, inexorable, sovereign — and only breaks through in full when grief overwhelms her capacity to suppress him. Her relationship to her own patron god is, in short, adversarial: something to be feared, resisted, and only surrendered to as a last resort.
Ryken Van Uther and Tarta — a relationship built on ritual, cultivation, and priesthood. Ryken invokes Tarta with intention and control, maintains an active temple in her honour, and has spent years in a structured relationship with his patron rather than experiencing her as an intrusive force. Where Ratelsi's transformation reads as possession, Ryken's reads as practice.
This distinction begins with Ryken's eventual role as Ratelsi's mentor in the early months of her recruitment into PART, where he teaches her a new relationship to her patron deity.
RECOGNITION AMONG MAWBORNS
Only another Mawborn can recognize the nature in someone else. Recognition occurs through the perception of the other's cosmic signature — the leaking mana, the trailing footprints invisible to everyone else. This is how Ryken identifies Ratelsi at their first meeting in the Hexoset penthouse, when her ambient aura bypassed rational thought entirely and spoke directly to the survival part of his brain, leaving footprints only he could perceive. Note that this recognition is instinctive and pre-verbal - closer to a physical sense than a deduction.
INSTITUTIONAL STATUS
Mawborns are extremely rare, and the Cura Supernorum, despite being fully aware of their existence, deliberately keeps the classification off the books. No MAP Test category exists for Mawborns; no registration pathway accounts for what they are. The institutional reasoning, as stated by those within the Cura's upper structure, is simply that "it's just better for the world not to know."
This is not an oversight. It is a policy, the conscious decision of an institution that has built its entire legitimacy on cataloguing and classifying every form of supernatural difference, choosing to leave exactly one category permanently blank.
THE PANTHEON OF PATRON GODS
Classification: Cosmic Deities
Neo Opus's pantheon is vast, populated by countless deities each tethered to a domain. Some are concrete (a sun, a volcano), some abstract (karma, judgment, liminality) — each equally absolute within their sphere regardless of how tangible or intangible that sphere may sound to mortal ears. These gods are not exclusive to Argona; they are known and worshipped across the wider world, with followers, cults, priesthoods, and temples existing wherever belief in them has taken root. Some patron gods maintain relationships with one another across a cosmological web of kinship and rivalry, of which only fragments have been confirmed so far.
What follows is every deity named in the story to date.
LIYUEN
Title: Goddess of Arcana
Domain: Magic itself — raw mana, secret and forbidden knowledge, mystical artefacts and relics
Public Status: State-sanctioned; the only deity with a fully public cult
Mawborn Vessel: None known
Liyuen presides over the fundamental, mystical, and often hidden forces that govern magical reality. Her domain divides into three interlocking spheres:
- Raw Magic — the flow, manipulation and weave of ley lines, ether, or mana. She governs magical theory, spellcraft, and the balance between forbidden magic and sanctioned magic.
- Secret & Forgotten Knowledge — true to the root of "Arcana" (Latin arcanus, "hidden"), her domain extends to lost grimoires, forbidden rituals, sealed vaults, and truths considered too dangerous for ordinary minds.
- Mystical Artefacts & Relics — the creation, sanctification, and preservation of enchanted objects, weapons, and runes.
Liyuen is the only deity fully absorbed into ordinary Argonian civic life. She's invoked casually in everyday speech ("Thank Liyuen," "benevolent Liyuen") across every social class. Her worship is institutionally inseparable from the Cura Supernorum, whose regulatory authority over Peculiars is framed as an extension of her will: Peculiarity as "biological trauma" only she can tame, and by extension, only the Cura — as her earthly administrators — has the authority to manage.
Open question: Whether this framing reflects Liyuen's actual will, or a doctrine imposed onto her image by the Cura for its own institutional benefit, remains unconfirmed. Liyuen has no Mawborn vessel through which she might speak for herself; she is known only through temple, doctrine, symbol, and the Sigil that bears her name. No one currently living can verify what she actually wants, only what the Cura says she wants.
ODED
Title: The Obsidian, The Immortal King
Domain: Volcanic Earth, Obsidian, Immortality
Public Status: Known only to those versed in the wider cosmic pantheon; entirely unknown to the Argonian public
Mawborn Vessel: Ratelsi Ozias
Oded's domain is a triad built around a single unifying idea that true permanence is forged, never given:
- Volcanic Earth — the explosive, churning fire beneath the crust; destructive genesis, the violent pressure required to create something that lasts forever.
- Obsidian — his physical manifestation. Cold, glassy, pitch-black, impossibly sharp; total stillness after catastrophe, precision, and imperishability made solid.
- Immortality — dominion over time, erosion, and mortality itself.
Oded chose Ratelsi before her birth, and his presence announced itself immediately: she was born with a pair of obsidian wings. His voice has lived in her subconscious her entire life — patient, mocking, inexorable, sovereign, a presence she learned, through years of discipline, to suppress and lock away. That containment has broken exactly twice: once at age six, following her mother's suicide, unleashing a massacre she vividly remembers; and once as an adult, following Timoth's death, at which point she chose consciously, in her grief, to unlock the door herself rather than resist it further.
Physical transformation: Full manifestation drains Ratelsi's skin to ivory before black tar weeps across her flesh from the soles of her feet to her collarbone. Bone cracks and reshapes, birthing ribbed, curved horns through her brow. Her talons elongate and blacken; her wings unfurl to their full eleven-foot span, reinforced by the transformation's raw force. Her invocation phrase — "Occupato, Rex Immortalis, Oded" — is the trigger point at which the Maw Seal appears, and the mergence between vessel and god completes.
TARTA
Title: Goddess of Liminality and Judgment
Domain: Thresholds, transitions, portals, cosmic and moral judgment
Public Status: Known only to those versed in the wider cosmic pantheon; worshipped through a ritualized priesthood serving Balun's elite
Mawborn Vessel: Ryken Van Uther
Tarta's domain governs every space, time, and state of being that exists "in between," paired with the authority to determine who or what is permitted to cross:
- Liminal Spaces & Thresholds — crossroads, doorways, bridges, borders, coastal tides, fog, shadow, and the witching hours of dusk and dawn. Any boundary where one state ends and another begins falls under her rule.
- Life & Death — worked in tandem with her sister Mortavath's domain; Tarta governs the boundary itself, not the realm on either side of it.
- Cosmic & Moral Judgment — Tarta functions as a tollkeeper, weighing souls, secrets, motives, and truths before permitting passage, transformation, or entry.
- Portal Manipulation & Spatial Authority — dominion over the magic that tears the fabric of space to link separate locations: planar tears, spatial distortion, wormholes, and the power to permit, deny, or redirect passage through any such opening.
Tarta is Mortavath's sister, and the two form a complementary pair: Mortavath is the realm of the dead; Tarta is the bridge that permits the living limited passage toward it. She grants access across the boundary that separates them from the living. Ryken, as her vessel, maintains the Aedes Limitum, her temple in Balun, where he receives offerings from grieving families, friends, and well-wishers across the capital and Sector Belt. He holds informal services or sits available to those who wish to send something toward the dead through him. He does not preach doctrine.
Portal application in practice: Ryken's ability to summon a "weapons vault" and manifest his scythe from a torn-open rift in the air demonstrates Tarta's Spatial Authority.
MORTAVATH
Title: Goddess of Death
Domain: Death, Shimun (Hell), Necromancy, Mourning
Public Status: Known only to those versed in the wider cosmic pantheon; referenced constantly through invocation and metaphor, never yet manifested
Mawborn Vessel: None confirmed
Mortavath's domain is the most expansive of any deity named so far, spanning:
- Shimun (Hell) — her governance over Shimun makes her custodian of the damned: torment, soul filtration, and the containment of primordial evils sealed within the abyss.
- Mortality & The End of Days — the natural end of all living things: decay, terminal fate, and the inevitable entropy that governs the cosmos.
- The Passage of Souls — primarily Tarta's domain, but understood to be shared between the sisters.
- Necromancy — the breach between life and death: ancestor veneration, corporeal reanimation, soul-binding, and the thin veil separating the mortal plane from Shimun
- Mourning — the emotional and physical collateral of death: grief, burial rites, subterranean depths, eternal rest.
As Tarta's sister, Mortavath completes a two-goddess system governing death and its accessibility: one holds the dead, one permits the living limited passage toward them.
TALIO
Title: God of Karma
Domain: Retributive justice, cosmic balance, karmic binding, truth and reckoning
Public Status: Known only to those versed in the wider cosmic pantheon; referenced through invocation and metaphor rather than organized worship on the page so far
Mawborn Vessel: None confirmed
Talio embodies the absolute, impartial execution of cause and effect:
- Lex Talionis (The Law of Retaliation) — his name's root, from the Latin principle of proportional justice ("an eye for an eye"). His central domain ensures every action, good or evil, returns to its source in equal measure.
- The Cosmic Balance & Debt — Talio maintains the intangible ledger of the universe: spiritual debts, broken oaths, unearned privileges, and the inescapable settling of scores.
- Karmic Binding & Fate — command over the threads of cause and effect, binding mortals to the consequences of their past actions until those consequences manifest, physically or spiritually.
- Truth, Reflection & Reckoning — because karma demands objective truth, his domain extends to clarity, mirrors, and illusion-shattering vision; in his presence, self-deception is said to fall away.
- Natural Order — beyond personal morality, Talio prevents any single force, faction, or individual from dominating without eventually paying a price for it.
SHIMUN
Classification: Cosmological location (not a deity)
Governing Authority: Mortavath
Shimun is the afterlife realm associated with damnation, torment, and the containment of primordial evil, also known as Hell within Neo Opus's cosmology, and understood to sit under Mortavath's custodianship rather than existing as an independent domain.
