Chapter 19 - Chapter 19: Robb IV

The memory was etched into his mind. A man advancing on Myrcella, a scream and then the struggle. Robb had appeared at the right moment it seemed and prevented his wife from being murdered. He'd ripped the man off his wife and Greywind had done the rest. The man's throat had been ripped open and once he'd checked that Myrcella was safe, he'd had the man's body burned.

Now they were in the Godswood with Mother, Theon, Ser Rodrik Cassel and Maester Luwin. Myrcella had a letter in her hand. A letter Robb had seen before. It was from her brother Tommen. A letter that revealed something about what had caused this attack.

"You are sure that it was your brother who did this?" Robb asked looking at Myrcella closely. She didn't seem too shaken by the attack, but he liked to think he knew his wife well enough to know that she was just about holding herself together.

"Yes." Myrcella said. "Tommen's letter makes it clear that something was going to happen. The golden one is what we referred to Joffrey as because it's what our mother called him. He's always disliked me, and now, now I think he was looking for a reason to get rid of me."

"Why?" Mother asked looking at Myrcella intently.

"Because I am a challenge to him. Because through our marriage, Robb is a challenge to him." Myrcella answered.

"He thinks we'd want to claim the throne?" Robb asked shocked. That was the furthest thought from his mind.

"Yes." Myrcella said. "He sees anyone who isn't Mother as a threat."

"And so, he'd want to take you out to remove that threat." Robb said, absolutely astounded by this dynamic. He took Myrcella's hand and squeezed it.

"Yes." Myrcella said. "I think it's lucky that he chose someone so incompetent to do the deed. And I am just thankful that you were in the keep when it was happening."

"So, am I." Robb said, the thought of Myrcella being murdered haunted him. He'd increased the guard. "I do not know why you dismissed Ser Arys from his duty beforehand." Robb added.

"Because it was late, and he was tired. He deserved some time to rest." Myrcella said.

Robb held up a hand, they'd had this argument many times before, and he had no wish to go through it again. He was of the view that a Kingsguard knight needed to be on guard at all times. Myrcella felt that the knight needed a rest.

"Can he be trusted?" Theon asked. "After all, he is a knight of the Kingsguard, and he will owe his loyalty to Joffrey should anything happen to King Robert."

Robb looked at Myrcella, he'd had this exact same conversation with her after the incident and she was sure that Ser Arys could be trusted. He didn't say anything though, knowing that his wife would want to make her own case.

"Yes. I have known Ser Arys since I was a baby, he has been my sworn sword since I was two. He would never betray me." Myrcella said.

Theon remained silent, but it was Mother who spoke then. "I will go to King's Landing and speak with Ned about this."

Robb shared a look with Myrcella and then asked Mother. "What will you say?"

"The truth." Mother said. "That someone tried to kill Myrcella and that we have reason to believe that it was the Crown Prince."

"You'll need to show him the letter." Myrcella said, handing it over. Mother took it and then asked.

"You do not mind me explaining the wording of certain parts of it?"

Myrcella shook her head. "Not at all, it will be needed."

"How will you get to King's Landing without being detected?" Robb asked. He suspected that Joffrey would be keeping an eye out for anyone who might come from the north to make a mess.

Mother exhaled and said. "I have friends who will be able to help me. You need not worry about that."

"Ser Rodrik will accompany you south." Robb said then. He was thankful that Mother did not object.

Maester Luwin spoke up then. "My lord, my ladies, this is all well and good, but a member of House Lannister is coming to Winterfell in a few days' time, we will need to figure out what to say to him."

"I will handle Uncle Tyrion, and I will ensure he is on our side." Myrcella said.

There was a brief silence and then Robb said. "So, we are all decided then?" There were murmurs of agreement and Robb nodded before turning and walking back to the castle with Myrcella.
