Johto Region, Mt. Silver
The morning sun crept over the rugged peaks of Mt. Silver, scattering golden light across the snow-dusted rocks.
After a full night of rest, Sabrina's condition had stabilized, at least physically.
Her psychic energy no longer pulsed erratically, and her expression had softened from the cold detachment she usually wore.
She stood near the mountain's edge, her long coat fluttering in the wind, and turned to face Sam.
"Sam… once I've finished rearranging things at the Gym," she said quietly, her voice laced with something unreadable, "I'll come find you. In Celestic Town."
Sam gave a faint smile, masking his discomfort.
"No need to worry about that... take your time."
He didn't press the subject.
After all, he'd spent the entire night carefully talking her down, unraveling her impulsive proposal piece by piece.
Sabrina wasn't someone who could be forced or ignored, especially with the kind of power she carried.
The only reason she'd backed off for now was Sam's promise: if she ever lost control again, if the overwhelming psychic resonance surged out of her body, he'd be there to help stabilize it.
That was enough.
For the moment.
Sabrina gave him a slight nod, a rare gentleness in her gaze.
"Then I'm going."
"Safe travels," Sam said, waving half-heartedly.
Without another word, Sabrina summoned her Xatu.
The Psychic and Flying-type appeared in a flash of light, its eyes gleaming with distant visions.
She climbed on its back, turned once more toward Sam, and raised her hand in farewell.
Then she was airborne, soaring into the vast Johto sky.
Sam let out a breath as soon as she vanished beyond the cliffs.
"Finally gone…" he muttered, running a hand through his hair.
There was a sigh of something between relief and exasperation.
"Sometimes, being too popular with women is more trouble than it's worth."
He paused.
If she really did come to Celestic Town… and happened to run into Cynthia…
"Yeah. She will kill us all."
He shook his head and refocused.
"No point worrying about it now. Let's deal with things as they come."
Despite the awkward farewell, this trip to Mt. Silver had been worthwhile.
He reached into his bag and pulled out two rewards from the system: a Black Belt and a dark, shimmering Darkinium Z crystal.
He turned toward a familiar figure nearby.
"Luca!"
"Luka~!"
Lucario jogged over, eyes bright and tail wagging slightly.
Sam couldn't help but smile.
"This is for you," he said, handing him the Black Belt.
"Absorb the energy in it. It'll boost your fighting spirit."
Lucario extended his paws.
Aura shimmered softly around him as he held the belt, waves of power radiating outward as the item's essence was drawn into his body.
Sam watched the glow settle into Lucario's core.
A faint pulse of strength flickered through the air.
The data panel appeared in his mind:

"Luka!" Lucario pumped his fist, his aura flaring briefly in acknowledgment.
"Feel it?" Sam asked, chuckling.
"You've gotten a clearer sense of how aura has, haven't you?"
Lucario nodded, a calm confidence in his stance now.
"Keep training," Sam said, resting a hand on his partner's shoulder.
"You've still got room to grow. I believe in you."
Lucario gave a quiet, determined bark.
Once Lucario moved off to resume his training, Sam turned his attention to the second item.
The Z-Crystal shimmered like a shard of twilight, an object infused with pure Dark-type energy.
"Come here, Darkrai."
A shadow shimmered to his left.
The Pitch-Black Pokémon emerged silently from the void, its presence silent yet commanding.
Sam held out the crystal.
"This is yours."
Darkrai stared at it, then at him.
A soft hiss escaped its form, not threatening, but curious.
"This will amplify your darkness," Sam explained.
"But you need to resonate with it. Accept it, and you'll be able to unleash something incredible."
Darkrai extended a clawed hand, shadows swirling faintly around its fingers.
The Darkinium Z began to glow in response.
Darkrai hovered silently as the Z crystal dissolved into shadow, its essence slowly drawn into his form.
The moment the last trace disappeared, something clicked.
A surge of dark power rippled through him, an ancient memory, a new move, etched itself into his being.
He opened his eyes.
They gleamed with newfound intensity.
[Pokémon: Darkrai]

Sam nodded to himself.
Both Lucario and Darkrai had come a long way since their expedition to Newmoon Island.
With constant battles and steady training, they'd grown significantly, now sitting firmly in the mid-champion tier, with elite potential and combat prowess.
They were dependable. Sharp. In sync with him.
Sam exhaled deeply and glanced at the sky, lost in thought.
"Lucario. Darkrai."
The two turned to him, alert.
"You've both become solid fighters. Silver's grown fast, too."
His eyes narrowed slightly.
"It's time to prepare for the fourth member of the team."
But it wouldn't be as simple as finding something strong.
Sam never captured Pokémon on impulse.
He weighed everything: their personality, their potential, how they'd interact with the rest of the team… synergy mattered more than raw power.
A team wasn't just about numbers, it was about balance.
As he stood there thinking through potential candidates, planning routes and timelines…
His Pokégear vibrated.
A call.
Unknown number.
He frowned but answered.
"Hello?"
"Professor Samuel Lockwood?"
The voice on the other end was male, polite but urgent.
"Yes, speaking. Who's this?"
"This is Wallace. The current Champion of Hoenn."
Sam's brow lifted slightly.
Wallace?
He'd heard of him, of course.
The elegant Water-type specialist of Sootopolis and the ancient traditions of the region.
But they had no direct connection.
Sam's work and travels mostly kept him within Sinnoh and Johto.
How did Wallace even get his number?
Almost as if sensing his confusion, Wallace added, "Cynthia gave me your contact. I apologize for reaching out this way, but the matter is urgent."
Sam's expression sharpened.
Cynthia wouldn't hand out his number lightly.
Not unless the situation was serious.
Wallace continued, voice lower now.
"There's been… a change. In Hoenn. Something is happening, and fast."
Sam's eyes narrowed.
A sinking feeling bloomed in his chest.
"Is it Groudon and Kyogre?"
A brief silence.
"…You know?" Wallace sounded genuinely surprised.
"Yes. Both have awakened. The balance is shifting, and the region's stability is at risk. We need help, your help."
Sam's jaw tightened.
Groudon and Kyogre, primal forces of the land and sea.
Their conflict had nearly shattered the region once before.
And now, it was happening again.
"I understand," he said.
"I'll head to Hoenn immediately."
He ended the call without hesitation.
Turning on his heel, he moved swiftly to the edge of the clearing.
"Come, Silver!"
With a swirl of air and a flash of silver, the young Legendary emerged from the treetops, wings shimmering in the morning light.
Sam leapt onto its back in one fluid motion.
"Let's go."
With a powerful beat of its wings, Lugia soared into the sky, racing toward the Hoenn Region.
Toward the rising storm.
Toward the clash of titans: Groudon and Kyogre.
