Chapter 31: Post-Invasion Recovery, Adam's Agency Expands
New York City, still scarred by the Chitauri invasion, was slowly, painfully, beginning to heal. The air, once thick with alien screams and the smell of ozone, now carried the sounds of jackhammers and the faint scent of fresh concrete. Adam, watching the cleanup efforts from his agency's newly expanded (and much less dusty) command center, felt a sense of weary pride. They had survived. And they had helped.
"You know, for a city that just got invaded by space lizards, New York is surprisingly resilient. Or maybe they just really like the drama. Either way, my agency is officially in the 'post-apocalyptic urban renewal' business. Who knew?"
"Adam, the Chitauri tech is yielding incredible data!" Jemma exclaimed, her face alight with scientific fervor, surrounded by holographic displays of alien weaponry. "The bio-mechanical integration is truly revolutionary! We're finding ways to… repurpose their energy sources!"
"And I've managed to reroute most of the city's emergency services communications," Skye added, her fingers flying across her keyboard. "We're coordinating civilian aid, food distribution, even helping locate missing persons. S.H.I.E.L.D.'s official channels are a mess, but ours are running smoothly."
"Excellent work, team," Adam said, a rare genuine smile on his face. He watched as news reports flashed across a large screen, showing cleanup crews working tirelessly. He decided to give them a little boost.
He used his Illusions, subtly, to make the piles of rubble appear to shrink faster than they actually were, making the progress seem more rapid, boosting the morale of the weary workers and the anxious public. He also used Technopathy to subtly influence the media, ensuring the narrative focused on resilience and recovery, rather than panic.
"A little bit of smoke and mirrors for the public. Because sometimes, hope is the most powerful illusion of all. And sometimes, it just makes people work faster."
His phone buzzed. It was Pepper Potts. "Mr. Stiels, the city is… grateful. Your agency's 'unconventional' assistance has been invaluable. Tony… he's still processing, but he wanted me to extend his thanks. And his bewilderment."
"My pleasure, Ms. Potts," Adam replied smoothly. "Just doing my civic duty. And earning my retainer. Glad to hear Tony's not trying to build another Iron Legion out of spare Chitauri parts."
He spent the next few weeks consolidating his agency's resources, upgrading their tech with salvaged Chitauri components (much to Jemma's delight). He knew the world was about to get even weirder. He needed more talent. Specifically, talent that could handle… well, magic.
He began researching. Whispers of enhanced individuals. Twins. Sokovia. Pietro and Wanda Maximoff. He knew their story. Their pain. Their potential.
"The Maximoff twins. So much power, so much trauma. They're like a walking, talking ethical dilemma. But they're also going to be crucial. Time to start laying the groundwork. Subtly, of course. Can't just knock on their door and offer them a job. They'd probably turn me into a frog."
He pulled up old news reports, obscure online forums, anything that mentioned unusual events in Sokovia. He needed to understand their current situation, their vulnerabilities, their motivations. He needed to find a way in. A loophole.
He knew it wouldn't be easy. They were scarred, angry, and distrustful. But Adam Stiels had a knack for finding the cracks in the system. And he had a feeling that these two, more than anyone, needed someone who understood what it was like to be… different.
