Chapter 44 - Chapter 44: Philosopher’s Stone

After leaving the Weasley household, Wes Elwin returned to Hogwarts. Here, he could fully dedicate himself to researching his next objective—the Philosopher's Stone.

The Philosopher's Stone—an alchemical treasure all alchemists dreamed of. It could transform ordinary metals into gold and even grant its bearer immortality.

Wes carefully held up a Philosopher's Stone, letting it catch the warm sunlight.

To call it a "stone" wasn't entirely accurate. The Philosopher's Stone existed in a highly unusual form—neither solid nor liquid. This unique state had earned it the title of "the fifth element."

Beneath its brilliant glow, Wes could almost feel the anguish and wailing of the souls imprisoned within it.

"I absolutely can't use the Philosopher's Stone directly."

Wes knew all too well that although the stone could extend one's life, its creation involved the sacrifice of human souls. Those souls, once transformed into the Stone, were filled with deep resentment and suffering.

If used recklessly, that resentment could one day erupt—causing unimaginable harm to the user.

Unless, like Hohenheim, one could speak to each soul individually and resolve their grievances—a process that required tremendous time and energy, something Wes didn't have.

Wes longed to harness the power of the Philosopher's Stone, yet he had no idea how to neutralize its dangerous side effects.

"I need to gather everything related to the Philosopher's Stone," he muttered.

The Stone wasn't unique to one world. Many worlds told tales of its existence.

"Philosopher's Stone."

"Stone from Heaven."

"The Alchemist's Stone," and even the "Elixir of Life." These were all names for the same legendary object.

Unfortunately, the Sorcerer's Stone had already been destroyed by Dumbledore. Otherwise, Wes could've done a direct comparison. The thought made him sigh in frustration.

He laid out all the materials he had: Flamel's alchemy notes, documents gathered from the alchemy world, and various records of Philosopher's Stone creation methods—placing them all neatly on his desk.

Then, spreading out a blank scroll and picking up a quill, he focused with sharp intensity.

"It's time to begin," he whispered, and dove into his work—his pen moving constantly, recording every idea and discovery.

Each word, each symbol, marked another step forward in his quest for truth. Bit by bit, he drew closer to his goal.

For three full days, Wes didn't leave his office.

He was completely immersed in research, forgetting all sense of time.

All his meals were brought to him by his loyal assistant, Jandy, who quietly supported him without a single complaint.

Sheets of parchment were scattered all over the floor, filled with Wes's scribbled thoughts and observations.

His hair had become disheveled, his eyes bloodshot from the strain of study. Ink stained his fingertips, and he gave off that familiar scent of long hours spent at work.

"That version of the Philosopher's Stone from the Alchemist World is way too twisted—created through massive national transmutation circles, forging it from the souls of millions. It's essentially stealing other people's lives to extend your own. No wonder it's filled with vengeful spirits."

"But what about the this world's Philosopher's Stone? What principle is it based on? Flamel's notes didn't include anything about how it was made!"

Wes grew frustrated. He crumpled up the scroll in his hand and tossed it aside with a deep sigh. "So annoying…"

He wished he could just use his wand to force Nicolas Flamel to spill the secret of the Sorcerer's Stone's creation—but he knew that was impossible.

After entrusting the Stone to Dumbledore, Flamel had vanished from public view. Not even Dumbledore knew where he had gone.

Wes knew he could never threaten someone like Nicolas Flamel—a man who had already faced death head-on.

He rubbed his face, trying to clear his mind.

He knew he had to find another way.

"The Philosopher's Stone can indeed prolong life, but the key is purifying the vengeful spirits inside it—turning it into a clean energy source."

With this new idea, Wes wanted to get back to researching, but his head was too foggy to concentrate.

"What's that smell?" he suddenly noticed a sour, pungent odor, and upon realizing it was coming from himself, immediately cast a Freshening Charm to clean it away.

He opened the windows, letting a rush of fresh air pour into the room. It was like a mountain spring washing through his chest, bringing a small sense of clarity.

Outside, he saw young wizards hauling their trunks back into the school.

"Vacation's over already? No wonder my head's spinning," Wes murmured.

Fatigue crashed over him like waves.

Unable to stay awake any longer, Wes stumbled to his quarters, took a hot shower, and collapsed into bed.

Exhaustion swallowed him whole. The moment his head hit the pillow, he fell into deep sleep.

---

Meanwhile, Jandy entered Wes's office like a conductor waving his baton. His fingers traced through the air, drawing glowing arcs.

The scraps of parchment floated up, organized themselves mid-air, then gently landed in neat stacks on the desk.

Books and papers with legs of their own shuffled into proper order.

Quills and ink bottles flew back to their designated places.

Even the stains on the desk and floor vanished without a trace.

Once everything was in place, Jandy gave a satisfied smile and left the office.

---

Wes didn't wake until noon the next day. A tight pressure in his lower abdomen served as a more urgent alarm than any spell, yanking him out of sleep.

Still groggy, he shuffled into the bathroom and took care of it.

He considered going back to bed, but his stomach betrayed him with a loud growl.

He groaned, then slowly sat up.

"Master," Jandy appeared right on cue, his voice gentle and respectful, "shall I prepare your lunch?"

Wes glanced at the time—just about noon. After a pause, he made up his mind.

"No need. I'll eat in the Great Hall."

He stretched and walked to the sink to freshen up.

After washing, he straightened his robes and made his way to the Great Hall with a steady stride.

As he entered, the Weasley twins and the younger Weasley siblings spotted him. They waved excitedly.

Wes smiled faintly and gave them a polite nod, then headed toward the staff table.

Sitting down, he tapped his knife gently against his plate.

A crisp chime rang out—and instantly, a steaming steak appeared.

The aroma was rich and savory, wafting up to his nose and making his mouth water.

In less than three minutes, Wes devoured the entire steak.

But he was still hungry.

He tapped the table again, and another steak appeared.

He kept eating. After three steaks, he finally set down his utensils, completely satisfied, and dabbed the corners of his mouth with a napkin.

"A troll must've snuck into the school," came Snape's cold, sarcastic voice from the left.

The other professors stared at Wes, stunned.

"I've been busy with research. Haven't had time to eat properly," Wes explained casually.

The professors nodded in understanding, some even showing sympathy.

"I was the same at his age," Flitwick said, eyes misty with nostalgia. "Painful but fulfilling days."

"Any progress?" someone asked, curious.

Wes could only shake his head helplessly.

They offered him words of encouragement.

Only Gilderoy Lockhart began boasting, claiming he could share his own success stories with Wes. He was beaming, as if he were the most accomplished wizard alive.

The other professors quickly found excuses to leave.

Wes watched him, amazed. He had never seen someone so shameless.

After that, Wes lost his appetite and returned to his office.

As he shut the door—

A translucent panel popped into view.
