Chapter 2 - Chapter 2: Scholar's mate

Confused, Mark thinked for a moment, then realized if he move his King forward the Queen can just immediately take it in the next turn" but can't I just takes this Queen?" he asked.

"Remember when I said to be able to win you must capture the enemies King?" Williams answered.

Mark nods his head.

"If you takes this Queen my bishop which is in the c4 will be able to take your King in the next turn then I win." Williams adds.

"Oh"

"Now let's analyze in your move 3 why did you place your Knight in f6?" Williams asked.

"Because your grin practically says ' I have an evil plan' " Mark grumble. "So I wanted to make your queen back off".

Williams laugh" your intentions are right but you fail to read the thought behind my moves, that's why you fail to respond correctly. In chess you must ensure that there are thoughts and motives in your every move. By the way the moves that I used against you earlier are one of the openings called scholar's mate or commonly known as four moves in our country"

Mark after some thinking said"Let's try again?"

Williams replied" sure I'll play white again and use scholar's mate as an opening try to come up a counter measure on it"

Same as the last game Williams moves his pawn to e4.

Mark thinking for a moment' earlier I lose because of the bishop and the queen, I don't know how to defend the bishop, but what if I prevent the Queen to go to h5 using Knight' Mark eye's lit up thinking that plan is possible, so Mark moved his pawn to e5.

Williams arm under his chin thinking for a moment, then pick up his Queen and placed it to h5 square.

'huh? He moved his Queen first, but unlike earlier there's no bishop to protect his Queen so he can't checkmate me. Then my plan is still feasible his Queen has no choice but to retreat '

Mark continued his plan and move his Knight to f6.

Williams replied by taking black's pawn on e4 using Queen" and that's also a check your must move your King or block with your other piece to ensure the safety of you king"

"My pawn" Mark furrowed. With no other choice he used his Bishop to block the King from being checked.

Williams without missing a beat moved his Queen to f4 in which Mark replied with Pawn to d6.

"That's inaccurate" Williams muttered while moving his piece.

Both players alternately move their pieces, then in move 6 Mark's first blunder appeared by moving his Bishop to g5 by trying to threaten Williams Queen in e3.

"That's a blunder" Williams said

"Why?" Mark asked

"Look" Williams replied then by simply taking the bishop, Mark paused for a moment then proceed to takes the White Queen with his Queen then Williams also takes it using his Bishop in c1.

"Both of us took 2 official pieces though" Mark replied looking at Williams.

"Yeah but I am have one pawn advantage" Williams answered.

"It's just a pawn" Mark replied while Williams just smiled.

In the middle game Williams did something weird he pick up his King placed it two square to his left then place the rook in the King right side.

"What's that?" Mark ask.

"Oh this? Yeah I forgot to explain this move is called castling if your king and rook haven't been move yet you can move your King two squares then place your rook on the otherr side" Williams replied.

"Hmm okay" Mark replied.

The two proceed to continue their play. Until the endgame came with white has overwhelming advantage with 3 officials and a checkmate.

"I gotta say for a player that only manage to play twice your pretty good, when I was only starting to play I don't even think about anything but trying to remember the legal moves of the game" Williams said with a twinge of envy with his voice.

"Again?" Ask Mark.

"Alright" answered Williams.

When they were about to start.

A women's shout interrupted their play" Williams, Mark dinners ready come downstairs and eat your"

"Okay mom!" Williams reply" looks like we will stop here for today, let's continue tomorrow's morning"

The two proceed to clean their chess pieces.
