Chapter 12 - CH 12

Twilight Over the Rooftops of Konoha

The sky burned with gold and gentle shadows as the sun dipped beneath the horizon. On the roof of the Academy, where the noise of the village felt distant, Naruto and Sakura sat in silence.

Naruto gazed down at the village below, his expression unreadable. He had always been that way since childhood. Quiet. Distant. As if he belonged to another world.

Sakura glanced at him from the side. He wasn't speaking, and yet… his presence demanded respect.

> He's always been alone. Calm. Serene. People used to say he was strange… but he never tried to be noticed. It was us who never looked at him.

> I wonder when I really started to see him… truly see him. When did he stop being "the boy who sits alone at the back of the class"?

> Back then, my heart beat for Sasuke. For that cold, distant façade that felt so fascinating. But Sasuke… he never once saw me.

> Naruto, though… even in his silence, he understood me without saying a word.

She lowered her eyes. She didn't dare ask the question aloud, but she wanted to understand. Why was he always so alone? Why did he never open up to others? And why… why was he so different now?

"You've never been like the others, Naruto."

He slowly turned his head toward her, his spiral eyes calm and glowing.

"I'm not like the others."

A brief silence.

"Does that make you sad?"

He blinked slowly.

"No. I've learned to live with it. But… I'm not meant for this world."

> That wasn't a confession. It was something deeper. Sad. Honest. Real.

> He's never complained, never shown weakness. He's carried everything alone, while I… I chased an illusion. Sasuke never wanted to protect me. But Naruto… I feel it—in his eyes, in his voice. He would do anything for me.

> I don't know what this is yet. But what I feel for him… it's no longer just curiosity. Or admiration. It's something stronger. Purer.

The sky, now tinged with deep blue, made the first stars shimmer. Sakura hadn't moved. And Naruto, for his part, seemed to be listening to the silence more than trying to fill it.

Then, softly, she spoke:

"Did you know I used to watch you sometimes?"

Naruto raised an eyebrow ever so slightly.

"No."

She gave a timid smile.

"Not often. And not really with my eyes. I think… I watched you with my assumptions. You were always alone. You seemed so far away…"

She paused, her heart beating faster.

"And I think… it scared me."

> There was something intimidating about him. Not like Sasuke. Sasuke always shielded himself from everything. But Naruto… he didn't need to hide. He was already beyond reach.

> And yet, today, he's here. Beside me. Silent. But he listens. He understands. And he doesn't judge me.

> I never knew I could feel so at peace with someone.

"I never knew how to approach you," she admitted.

Naruto closed his eyes for a moment.

"Neither did I. But I never wanted you to come to me out of pity."

Sakura looked at him, heart tightening.

"It's not pity. Not now. Not anymore."

She hugged her knees a little closer.

"I want to know you, Naruto. Not the image. Not the power. You."

He slowly turned his head toward her, and their eyes met again. This time, she didn't look away.

The wind had calmed, but a gentle warmth still lingered in the air. They were still there, side by side on the rooftop, their hands entwined. Their fingers no longer trembled. Fear had given way to a strange sense of peace.

"Sakura," she whispered, breaking the silence.

He looked at her, serene.

"Do you think… we can choose who we love?"

He tilted his head slightly, his gaze lost in the sky.

"I think… we can resist love. But we can never truly choose it. It imposes itself. And sometimes… it heals."

Those simple words struck Sakura like lightning. She realized he wasn't talking about her — not yet. But he was letting her get closer.

> I thought I loved Sasuke. But I loved what he represented. The image. The mystery. The silent strength.

> But you… you never tried to get my attention. You never asked me to love you.

> And that's exactly why I feel drawn to you. As if my heart understood long before I did.

Naruto stood without a word. Sakura thought he was about to leave, but instead, he walked slowly to the edge of the roof, then leaned over. A moment later, he came back… with a tiny white flower in his hand.

She recognized it: a tsukihana, a rare moonflower that only bloomed a few nights a year. Fragile. Fleeting. Yet serenely beautiful.

Naruto offered it to her in silence.

"It lasts only one night," he murmured. "But it absorbs the light of the stars and holds it in its petals until dawn."

Sakura, moved, took the flower gently between her fingers.

"Like a memory?"

He nodded softly.

"Like a promise."

"Why are you giving it to me?" she asked.

"Because… this is the first time someone truly wants to know me."

His words were neither sad nor bitter. They were simply stated, like a quiet truth.

Sakura lowered her eyes.

"Then I want this to be the last time you ever feel alone."

> I've looked at him from afar so many times. But today, it feels like I'm truly touching him for the first time.

> Not his hand. Not his power. But his heart. What he hides behind the silence, behind those star-filled eyes.

> And I catch myself wanting to love him. Not because he's strong. But because he's real. And pure.

Hesitating, she slowly untied the red ribbon that held a lock of her hair in place. She held it for a moment, as if reflecting.

Then, without a word, she tied it gently around Naruto's left wrist.

He looked at her, surprised.

"It's so you won't forget," she whispered. "This moment. What I felt. What you helped me understand."

Naruto touched the ribbon softly.

"I won't forget."

"You scare me, Naruto."

He looked at her.

"Why?"

"Because… I realize I've never truly loved anyone. Not like this."

Naruto remained silent for a moment. Then he answered, calmly:

"Me neither."

A Moment Suspended in the Invisible

They stayed like that for a long time, without speaking. The sky gradually turned to deep black, and the bright moon bathed their faces in a peaceful glow.

Sakura rested her head on his shoulder. He didn't move. He accepted.

The world could keep turning. But there, on that rooftop, between the whisper of the stars and the silence of words, two hearts had begun to beat in unison.

The red ribbon on Naruto's wrist glowed faintly under the moonlight. The wind had risen again — but it was no longer just a gentle night breeze. It felt strangely alive.

Sakura lifted her head, her eyes shining.

"Naruto… are you… connected to something greater than this world?"

He didn't answer right away.

Then, calmly, almost as if stating a truth too simple to deny, he said:

"This world is a cage. And I found a key."

---

At those words, the wind stopped. Literally. As if time itself had paused. The stars above seemed to shimmer brighter. And for a brief moment, Naruto's eyes lit up — not with chakra, but with something far older. The brilliance of the Shinkugan.

Sakura, her lips parted, said nothing. But she saw. She understood. What dwelled within Naruto wasn't just immense power — it was an entire world.

---

"You don't come entirely from this world," she whispered.

Naruto closed his eyes, then slowly opened his hand in front of him. A white light formed in his palm. Not a flame. Not chakra. Something pure. Alive. Almost ethereal.

"This light… it lives within me. It speaks to me, sometimes. Guides me. And now… it's recognized you."

Sakura flinched gently. The light was now floating in front of her. She moved toward it slowly and, without knowing why, placed both her hands around it.

A soft warmth filled her heart. Like a silent melody that resonated deep within her soul.

---

At the touch of that light, a delicate shape appeared on Sakura's skin, just at the hollow of her collarbone: a small silver spiral-shaped seal. Nearly invisible. But Naruto saw it.

And he understood.

"It recognized your heart."

Sakura looked down, overwhelmed.

"What does it mean?"

"That you're connected to me. Not by contract. Not by oath. But by choice."

---

> He could have rejected me. Run from me. Hidden the truth.

> But instead… he let me see. Who he truly is. What he protects. What he hides.

> And I, Sakura Haruno… chose to walk beside him. Not in spite of what he is. But because it's him.

Naruto closed his hand. The light vanished. The wind returned. And the world seemed to start moving again.

But nothing would ever be the same.

Sakura slid her hand into Naruto's, naturally.

"No matter what happens," she whispered, "I won't turn away from you."

He closed his eyes for a moment.

"Then… I'll protect your future. Even if I have to burn everything else down."
