Chapter 2 - The Talent Awakening Ceremony

His decision not to explain further is based on a single criteria. It wasn't assured if everyone will awaken an Essen-Type. So disclosing information about Essen-Types and the Essen-Mage's Association without certainty is pointless, if they do awaken, they'll be qualified to take the Essen-Mage's exam.

This whole process, the selection, granted as a privilege to all graduating students, was all aimed at one thing. Recruiting capable individuals who will become reputable Essen-Mages in the kingdom.

In this era, Essence-Users are referred to super powered beings who awakened their Essen-Types.

"Once you hear your name, step forward and place your hand on the Orb." He instructed.

The nervous murmurs of the crowd grew intensely as Arthur boomed, "The first student, Kaira."

The girl he called forth, Kaira, stood from her seat and approached the desk.

As she walked gracefully towards the Orb, whispers followed behind her.

"It's principal Elysia's daughter." A student mumbled.

"She's the most popular girl in school and also the most intelligent amongst us."

"Not to mention she's also as hot and thick like her mother!"

"Quiet!" Principal Elysia shouted, veins bulging continuously out of her forehead, if it were any other comment she'd be fine with it, but this?

'Seriously, they don't even bother to hide their lustful eyes in front of the recruiter.' She thought, palms slamming against her forehead in shame.

"I wonder what Essen-Type she will awaken." Another student whispered.

Arriving at the desk, she placed her dominant hand on the Orb confidently and immediately the air crackled with energy.

The Orb pulsed with an intense golden light, a glow which covered both Kaira and the Orb.

Instinctively, they all shielded their eyes with their arms from the pulsating light.

As the light died down, a shimmering system HUD window materialized in front of her with the specific inscription "A" written on it.

Only she could see it, however the Orb had the ability to reveal her Essen-Type the moment of her awakening.

"Kaira— A-rank Essen-User — Weather Manipulation." Arthur announced, leading to a thunderous cheer from the students.

"A-rank Essen-User!?"

"Awesome!"

"I expected nothing less from the principal's daughter."

In this world, Essen-Users varied according to ranks, it ranged from F-rank which is the lowest and weakest of all, to SSS-rank which is the highest and strongest Essen-User of all.

Arthur cleared his throat, silencing the students as he called forth the next student. "Next, Aiden Valtor."

'What!?' Aiden exclaimed in his thoughts. "I'm already next!?"

With a slight gulp, he rose to his feet and approached the desk.

Kazuki, along with several others, chuckled at him, Aiden was daring—a relentless go-getter.

Yet despite his quirks, some still found him oddly charming, perhaps because of his undeniably charisma.

He arrived at the desk and placed his hand on the Orb.

The light show commenced, the body of Ren and the Orb glowing brightly. As the light dissipated, another system HUd window only visible to him materialized in his line of vision. On the window was the letter "C" inscribed.

"Aiden Valtor — C-rank Essen-User — Pyrokinesis."

"C-rank Essen-User? That's not bad at all!" He thought, he expected a B-rank Essen-User but at least C-rank wasn't far fetched.

"Hell yeah!."

Kazuki chuckled, judging from his expression, he could tell that he really awakened an affinity for fire.

"Your students are showing promising signs principal Elysia, I don't recall how often Essen-Users of C-rank and above were awakened from scratch." Despite the low ranks, it was an impressive feat given the ratio of C-rank Essen-Users in the last five years.

"I told you proctor, this class is special." Elysia replied with a smile, regardless of their unholy and crude behavior, they had to be her most favorite set of students.

Once again, Arthur's voice cut through the voices of the students as each were nervous to hear their names. "Mira Ravenheart."

A nervous Mira rose to her feet, moving gracefully at will towards the Orb.

"Oh! There's another beauty!"

Arriving at the desk, she placed her dominant hand yet again on the Orb and the same light show repeated itself.

"Mira Ravenheart — B-rank Essen-User — Sub Elementalist — Cytokinesis."

"Whoa!!!"

"B-rank!?"

The outcome was a bit expected, but no one ever thought it'd stretch as far as B-rank.

Following Mira's awakening, Arthur called forth each student forward with a majority of them awakening ranks of E-C, and four out of the 24 students awakened an F-rank talent.

At long last, it came down to the last two students yet to awaken their talents.

"Ryuu Zehn."

The boy stood to his feet, so calm and composed that the atmosphere in the room shifted to his will.

Arthur couldn't help but to observe him carefully, not only did he ask a nerve wrecking question, but his demeanor suggested that whatever talent he'd awaken, it would be something truly superb.

Without second guessing it, he approached the orb and placed his dominant hand on it.

Immediately, the same glow that lit the room during Kaira's awakening illuminated the class, but this time, it's sheer intensity was far greater than Kaira's, forcing everyone to immediately shield their eyes with their arms or the consequences would be fatal.

As the blinding light dissipated, Arthur chuckled loudly. "Good grief seems we have another prodigy on our hands.

Much like Kaira's, the system HUD window had the letter "A" inscribed on it.

"Ryuu Zehn— A-rank Essen-User — Light manipulation."

"What!?"

"Is he for real?"

"M-monsters! Awakening A-rank Essen-Types?"

A warm smile fluttered Arthur's face, although not much, he knew as much as the principal that this year's recruit were simply outstanding compared to the other final year students.

"Finally, Hyomei Kazuki."

He could feel it, his heart skipping a beat as his named was mentioned. Finally, at long last the decisive step forward had finally arrived.

Kazuki exhaled sharply as he forced himself up to his feet, his heart pounding non-stop as all eyes gazed at him.

"You've got this man." Like a good wingman, Aiden supported him, feeding him words of encouragement.

As he approached the Orb, whispers followed behind him.

"Tch, that orphan kid?" One of the students whispered, it wasn't difficult to tell that it came from his bullies. Boys who made it their everlasting mission to torture and derive joy from watching him suffer.

"Why was he even allowed into the selection, if his parents couldn't awaken a descent Essen-Type, what makes him qualified?"

"I bet you 100 Ryo he awakens as an F-rank Essen-User."

Most of the whispers came from his bullies and it didn't bother him at all.

This was the moment he had been waiting for, the first step to saving his brother's life. Asides awakening supernatural abilities, another benefit that came alongside being an Essen-Mage was it's financial value.

Essen-Mages were the highest paid occupation in this world, their mission was simple, clear dungeons, gather the essence stones from the dungeon's boss and submit it to the Essen-Mage's association and their merits will be according to it's value.

For Kazuki, this was the only way forward, the only way possible to raise the money to pay for his brother's bills was to become an Essen-Mage.

Of course they were other illegal options if he was that desperate, even the option to venture into explicit content creation, but given how average he was, yes, average, it wasn't going to be profitable.

As he placed his dominant hand on the Orb, a slight glow escaped it momentarily before the Orb's glow completely died down instantly for the first time since it's discovery.

The atmosphere in the classroom was intense as they all tried to understand what it meant, both Principal Elysia and Arthur were completely shocked to their core.

Such a display was rare, but it only meant one thing.

With a sharp exhale, Arthur faced Kazuki with a nonchalant expression. "Hyomei Kazuki — E-Rank Essen-User."
