Chapter 2 - The System

[Congratulations, you have activated the military store system.]

'Huh?'

Fredrick looked at the translucent blue panel floating in the air in front of him. The white texts that were etched on it shimmered faintly under the artificial light of the bathroom light bulb.

'System?...like in, webnovels?'

Different thoughts crashed against the walls of his mind as he thought of every possibility. Is all of this just a prank? Has he gone crazy? Or is this real?

Suddenly, the white glowing words disappeared into nothingness, and new ones took their place.

[You have received 500 tokens as a welcome bonus.]

[Would you like to open the military store?]

Fredrick was lost, and his mind was aflame from the ridiculous situation he had found himself in.

But he decided to give in to his instinct and the countless experiences he had from reading system-focused webnovels.

He evaded a bite from the zombie and screamed in panic.

"Yes."

As soon as he said that, the small blue panel disappeared, and a bigger blue grid-translucent-replaced it.

In it were thousands upon thousands of light blue squares with pictures of various guns, military food, military vehicles and military personnel.

Most of these squares were greyed out and had a silver lock on their surface. Only some of them were clear and unlocked.

In the upper right corner of the panel was a filter button and the number of tokens he had.

In the upper left corner was an empty bar with "Level 1" beside it.

He examined the panel for a moment before his eyes fell on a particular unlocked box.

In the box was a man dressed in a tan and olive combat uniform, paired with a tactical vest, black boots and a pair of fingerless gloves. His outfit was glued to the skin tightly, enabling flexible movements to the wearer.

His features were plain except for the stoic look in his eyes. Even through the digital screen, they released an aura of masculinity and strength.

There were no batches or any name tags except for an empty black circle on the right arm of the man's outfit.

Beneath the image were white letters saying:

[[Assault Rifle Wielder]]

And beside it were more words written in white letters. [Buy - 100 coins.]

Fredrick didn't hesitate and screamed in his mind.

'Buy'

In his state of panic, he clicked the buy button-mentally- two times, decreasing his token amount to three hundred coins.

"Fwoosh"

Two clouds of golden sparks manifested before him, and through those clouds, two tall men dressed in military uniforms appeared.

Both of them wore the same outfit shown in the picture, and both of them had two combat knives strapped to their belts.

As soon as they saw Fredrick getting attacked, they sprang into action.

'Thud, thud, thud'

They lunged toward the attacker in heavy steps until they came close to him.

The one who was closest to the attacker locked his neck in a chokehold and dragged him away from Fredrick's face using his superior strength.

The second drew the knife from his belt and stabbed the attacker right in the middle of his temple.

"Grrruuur"

The attacker grunted a little before swaying. Then it fell onto the floor like a broken puppet.

[Congratulations, you have received 10 coins from killing a walker.]

The one thing that was strange about all of this was not the notification from the panel; it was the fact that no blood came from the wound on the attacker's head.

It was strange since it was covered in dried blood the last time.

Fredrick stared at the motionless corpse for a moment before rushing to the bathroom door. He closed it shut and jammed it using the mop he was holding.

"Shit...Shit..."

He leaned his back against the door and looked toward the two soldiers in front of him warily. Then his gaze stopped on the corpse lying on the floor.

His eyes moved to the terrible wound on its temple, to the hanging eye coated in blood, to the grotesque neck wound, which was a mess of flesh and blood. The disgusting visual scenario was further enhanced by the unbearable stench of rotten flesh, piss and excrement.

His stomach churned. Something came up his throat, and he knelt on the tiled floor. Then he painted the shiny floor of the bathroom with his vomit.

"General, calm down."

One of the soldiers stepped toward him and gently patted him on the back, while the other took a small water bottle from his vest and neared it to Fredrick's mouth.

After emptying his stomach, he drank the water like a thirsty hyena, which calmed his already nervous nerves.

When he emptied the bottle, he wiped his mouth and exhaled a long sigh.

Then his gaze danced between the two soldiers who had saved his life.

"Who the hell are you guys?" His voice dropped a little before recovering. "And how the hell did you guys appear out of nowhere?"

The soldier who gave him the bottle took his bottle back-when Fredrick gave it to him-and straightened his posture. Then he said without any expression.

"We are soldiers created by the system for general's use. When you purchased, we were deployed here by the system."

Fredrick lowered his gaze with a frown and mumbled.

'System? Something as ridiculous as that is real?... Is this my cheat in this life? Is this the way heaven ask forgiveness of me for making me into this fattie.'

A smirk appeared on his face for a moment before disappearing when he saw the cloudy eyes of the corpse in front of him. He lingered for a moment and asked the two soldiers.

"What are those things? Zombies?"

The soldier who patted him followed his gaze for a moment before looking right back at him.

"Yeah, that's a zombie. He died after getting infected with the Z virus. Then he was reborn as a zombie that hunts and eats normal humans. A zombie apocalypse happened a couple of moments ago when the general was unconscious, and it is the reason for the system's activation."

Fredrick's eyes widened, and his mind turned chaotic.

'The zombie apocalypses? The Z virus? What the fuck?'

Fredrick was taken aback by the sudden turn of events. A feeling of dread crept up to his heart from the deepest depths of his soul.

'Zombie apocalypse? That means I am fucking doomed...It would be an entirely different scenario if I were as strong as Robert, but I am fucking not.'

The feeling of being ripped apart by the teeth and claws of zombies appeared in his mind for a moment.

He then looked at his round belly, which devoured more than 1 kilogram of rice every day. He gulped a mouthful of saliva for a moment before thinking.

'How the fuck can I kill zombies while looking like this? It would be all over the moment I swing.'

He closed his eyes for a moment. Ragged, shallow breath escaped from him until he opened his eyes and looked at the two soldiers standing infront of him.

Both of them emanated a cold, deadly aura that promised certain death to all enemies. When he saw the two knives resting on their belts, a smirk appeared on his face.

'What the heck am I even thinking? I don't need to be strong, I don't need to fight. These guys can do it for me.'

'From the way they acted before, it seems like they prioritise my protection, and it's not only these two-'

The memory of the translucent blue panel appeared in his mind.

'I can buy hundreds-no, thousands of them if I have enough tokens. Not only soldiers, there were tanks, helicopters, and machine guns. This system is not just a tool, it's a fucking army.'

Fredrick's eyes glowed with excitement and joy.

'This might finally be my time...The system will help me get the things I have always wanted. Power, respect, women, everything.'

"Bang, Bang"

His concentration was broken by multiple loud bangs on the entrance door. Multiple hands were banging on the door while pushing it; the mop struggled to hold its ground.

'Ohh, fuck I should have put something much durable.'

The two guards immediately sprang into action and stood in front of their general. They were like two heavy pillars of war that threatened to tear apart anything that came out of that door.

"General, please stay back. We will handle the zombies."
