Chapter 9 - Chapter 9 The Sokovia Accords

Chapter 9

The contents of the Sokovia Accords were actually quite simple and straightforward. On paper, they were similar to what Peter had learned from the TV.

The accords stipulated that the Avengers would no longer be a private organization, and all their actions would be supervised by an LHG special panel, allowed to act only when the panel deemed it necessary.

"The accords sound fine, but, I mean, what if the panel wants me to do something, but I don't want to? Do I have the right to refuse?" Peter looked at Tony, asking a question.

Tony paused, then shrugged. "Of course, no problem. The panel only has oversight authority to prevent us from acting on our own, but they can't force us to do things we don't want to."

Peter nodded.

"I understand. I agree to the accords."

Signing the accords meant he would lose some things, like having his information recorded in files or possibly being monitored frequently.

But that wasn't a big deal.

Because once they knew his true identity, those things were already in place.

Even someone as powerful as Thor, who wasn't even from Earth, had his information recorded.

Compared to that, Peter cared more about autonomy.

This would allow him to act according to his own will when he felt something was wrong.

Instead of becoming someone else's weapon, used by them.

In fact, the Sokovia Accords were just a law specifically for superpowered individuals.

Ordinary laws restrict ordinary people; super laws restrict superhumans.

That was fair and reasonable.

Peter also wanted to protect his Aunt May.

If all superhumans could sign the Sokovia Accords and not abuse their powers, or even use them to benefit others, then his Aunt May wouldn't be harmed by people like that.

Of course, he also knew this was just an ideal.

The world would never lack ambitious opportunists.

No matter what kind of world it was or what era it was set in, it was always like this.

And all Peter could do was try his best to protect the people he cared about.

Hearing Peter's affirmative response, Tony smiled. "Good, kid. I didn't misjudge you."

"So, Tony, can you tell me about the help you need?" Peter asked.

Tony turned his phone, put it away, and said seriously, "I need you to come with me to bring back an old friend of mine."

"The Captain?"

"Yes."

"When do we leave?"

"We, uh... you don't seem surprised at all?"

"Why should I be?" Peter shrugged.

"You little smarty-pants, you really remind me of myself when I was young." Tony looked around Peter's room, trying to analyze him through the setup and items.

"Did the famous Mr. Stark also go to the junkyard to scavenge equipment when he was young?" Peter ignored Tony's behavior. If he thought he could figure him out just by looking at a room, wasn't that a bit too naive?

"Don't tell me, I actually did! When I was twelve, I wanted to build a cluster gun, you know, the laser-shooting kind, and then BOOM!" Tony made an exaggerated gesture, running his hand through his already short hair.

Peter could already imagine Tony with a soot-blackened face and a smoking, exploded hairstyle.

"Hahaha!"

After some banter, the two quickly grew closer.

"Okay, let's talk about what happened," Tony organized his thoughts.

Some guy, to carry out his conspiracy, deliberately caused an explosion at the Vienna Sokovia Accords signing, using the world's seven billion people to locate the Winter Soldier.

Then, he managed to activate the Winter Soldier, turning him back into Hydra's killing machine.

Captain America, to help his good buddy, secretly took him away.

Along with them went "Falcon."

For their "defection," the council wanted to send special forces to kill the three outright.

But Iron Man convinced the Secretary of State.

However, the Secretary only gave him 36 hours to bring back Captain America, the Winter Soldier, and Falcon.

As for right or wrong, Iron Man hadn't considered it.

He made this decision purely as a friend.

He didn't want Captain America killed by special forces. He wanted to bring him back first, let him cool down, and then slowly convince him.

So, he needed Peter's help.

After all, the other side had the numbers.

"Alright, since you're also fine with it, let's go!" Tony made the final decision.

Peter lightly leaped, pushing open a panel in the ceiling, from which a neatly folded set of clothes immediately dropped.

That's right, this was his suit.

A suit made from old clothes and modified from a costume used in a school performance.

In the past, Peter was actually quite satisfied with it. Sure, it was a bit ugly, but it was his labor of love!

But after seeing the Shadow Spider-Man's suit, he suddenly felt his own wasn't so great.

The Shadow Spider-Man's suit was also made from old clothes.

But his old clothes were from his Uncle Ben's World War I pilot uniform, with excellent performance in various aspects and even some bulletproof capabilities.

Most importantly, it was cool.

Adding a sleek black cloak over the suit was, in teenage Peter's mind, the epitome of cool!

Peter's momentary pause made Tony think he was hesitating.

He quickly threw out a bait: "Peter, about the September Foundation, I was serious."

"September Foundation? What's that?" Peter asked, puzzled.

Tony explained, "Simply put, it's a relief fund set up for superpowered people like you. With this fund, you can get support in technology, funding, and other areas."

Then he pointed at Peter's baby-pajama-style suit and said, "For example, this thing—I think we can upgrade it. You deserve better."

"There's such a good deal!" Peter was a bit surprised. "What's the catch? The fund isn't free, right?"

Tony nodded. "With great power comes great responsibility. In return, you need to join the Avengers as a reserve Avenger and fight against evil."

"Why's it suddenly getting so cheesy?" Peter teased.

Tony said, "Sorry, I'm a businessman. I'm not good at using ideals to rope people in. I prefer talking about benefits."

"If someone sacrifices their own interests for some so-called ideal, I'd just think they're an idiot."

Tony shrugged and continued, "You don't need to overthink it. Cap, Natasha, Banner... they all have living assurances."

Peter nodded, accepting it straightforwardly.
