System: New Quest Available – "Make Her Feel Desired."
Objective: Compliment Rika in a way that's genuine and intimate.
Time Limit: Until sunset today.
Reward: Affection +4, Memory Echo Boost.
Penalty: Affection -5. Temporary Silencing of System Assistance (24 Hours).*
It was my first penalty since getting this system and I wasn't gonna take it.
The umbrella moment stayed with me longer than I expected.
Her perfume clung to my jacket. The sound of her quiet laugh echoed through my head all night. I didn't sleep. Just laid there, eyes open, watching the ceiling shift with moonlight.
"Don't catch feelings, rookie," I muttered.
System: Statistically inevitable. You're human. Probably.
At school, I caught Rika in the staff hallway, leaning against the window with a coffee in hand. Her blazer was off. Her shirt slightly unbuttoned. Tired, but less guarded.
Time to pull off the quest.
"You look good today."
Her eyebrow raised. No smile.
"Try again."
I stepped closer, careful not to invade.
"You make tired look beautiful."
Her lips parted just slightly. Then she looked away, sipping her coffee.
"Smooth."
System: Quest Complete. Affection +4. Memory Echo Boost Unlocked: "Her First Classroom."
But that boost came with a flicker.
A flash.
Rika at 22, standing alone in an empty classroom, arranging textbooks with trembling hands. A ring on her finger. That same tired smile—but newer, softer.
Then the flash ended.
And I felt it again: that ache. That sense she never really got to grow out of being someone's second choice.
System: New Quest Available – "Touchpoint."
Objective: Make meaningful physical contact.
Reward: Memory Unlock. Trust Bump.
Penalty: System goes silent for 24 hours. Also, lose 5 affection.*
I hesitated.
She was walking ahead of me now, through the courtyard. The day was cloudy. Wind tugged at her shirt.
"Rika—wait."
She turned, slow.
I took a risk.
Stepped forward and fixed her collar. Gently.
Not a grab. Not a move. Just a little, careful gesture.
She froze. Then blinked.
"You always this bold?"
"Only when it matters."
System: Quest Complete – Touchpoint. Trust Bump +3. Memory Unlock in Progress.
We stood there, too long for normal.
"You scare me," she said quietly.
"Why?"
"Because you're the kind of person I could accidentally trust."
Then she walked off.
Back in class, Aki shot me a look.
"You bagging the hot teacher or just stalking her?"
"Neither. She's stalking my thoughts."
"You're weird as hell."
"Says the guy who brought cold pizza to homeroom."
He flipped me off and tossed me a slice.
We laughed like nothing heavy was hanging between periods of trig and literature.
But the system had already lit the fuse.
After school, I found a message scribbled on a folded paper in my desk.
"You want to know the real me? Meet me at the café near 5th and Haru, 6 PM."
No name. But I knew the handwriting.
Rika.
System: Hidden Quest Activated – "Unmask."
Objective: Get her to talk about her past without directly asking.
This one didn't have a penalty.
Which meant the stakes were higher.
Sometimes, the system didn't warn you because it wanted you to feel it.
And I already knew… I was way past the point of feeling.
The café was quiet, dimly lit. Small booth by the window. Jazz in the background. Rika was already there, sipping red wine.
She didn't say anything when I sat. Just nodded.
"I almost didn't come."
"Same."
"But you did."
"I always show up."
Her eyes flicked to me. Measured. Calm. But not guarded.
She poured a little wine into a second glass.
"One drink. One story. That's the deal."
"Yours or mine?"
"Yours first."
I could've lied.
I didn't.
"I was fifty when I died."
"Oh, we're starting with insanity."
"Shot. Military mission gone bad. Next thing I know—I'm sixteen again. New name. Same last name. Whole different world."
She stared at me like she couldn't decide whether to laugh or leave.
"And you expect me to believe that?"
"No. But I promised to give you something real."
She sipped. Silent for a beat too long.
"Your eyes don't belong to a teenager."
That was all she said.
Then she launched into hers.
"I was nineteen when I met him. Married by twenty-one. Divorced by twenty-eight. He cheated. Lied. Got another woman pregnant. I stayed quiet. For too long."
Her voice didn't shake.
But her fingers did.
"He made me feel worthless. Like everything I did was a waste unless it served him."
"He's wrong."
"He made me think I was only good for fucking, cleaning, and looking tired in pictures."
I didn't flinch.
"You're more than that."
"I don't need saving."
"I don't save people. I stand next to them until they remember who the fuck they are."
She blinked.
"You've got a mouth on you."
"I've got a mouth for a lot of things."
She laughed. Not loud. But real.
System: Bonus Achievement Unlocked – "First Real Laugh."
Reward: Fantasy Glimpse Unlocked. [NSFW Memory Trigger: 'Café Countertop - Night Edition']
System: Affection +6. Lust +2. Curiosity Spike. Lust was finally activated, sex is loadin.....
We didn't kiss.
But she looked at me like she had thought about it.
"Same time next week?"
"Only if we raise the stakes."
"What do you have in mind?"
"I'll show you. Next time."
On my way home, the system pinged one last message:
WARNING – System Penalty Activated: Lust over Trust Flag Raised.
Result: Next quest will include double penalty if failed.
Guess I was getting too close, too fast.
And the system? It always knew when to slow me down… or punish me for not listening.
And well....I was kinda getting use to it.
