-------------------------------------------------------------
It had been over a month since the start of the semester, and Tang Wulin and the others had served as class monitors for some time now. They could all sense that certain students, led by the five prodigies from the Young Genius Ranking, had been deliberately isolating them—especially Tang Wulin.
Bai Xu, on the other hand, remained indifferent, like a block of wood, neither interfering nor paying much attention. Gu Yue naturally sided with Tang Wulin, Xie Xie, and Xu Xiaoyan, as she was even less familiar with Wu Siduo and her group.
Thus began the silent struggle between the class factions. Nearly every day, Bai Xu witnessed the cold war play out. This class selection tournament could be considered the decisive battle at the foot of Skyend Mountain in their ongoing conflict.
The matchup pitted the five Young Genius Ranking members against Tang Wulin's core team, making it a highly anticipated showdown.
Just as the class buzzed with discussion, Shen Yi, who had just left, returned—this time accompanied by two others as they entered the classroom.
"Everyone, quiet down," Shen Yi said firmly.
The class quickly fell silent, all eyes turning to her.
"Our class will be welcoming two new transfer students. Let me introduce them. This is Ye Xinglan, a power-type battle soul master. The other is Xu Lizhi, a food-type tool soul master. Let's give them a warm welcome."
Scattered applause followed, though some muttered discontentedly:
"Since when did Shrek Academy become so lenient? Transfer students can just waltz in now? How bizarre."
Meanwhile, Bai Xu was deep in thought. 'The Shrek Seven Monsters are nearly taking shape. It's about time.'
In private, he sought out Shen Yi and Wu Zhangkong.
"I want to form a team by myself—to test something," Bai Xu stated firmly before the two teachers.
"What exactly are you trying to test? The minimum requirement for this tournament is three members per team. We can't bend the rules just for you," Shen Yi replied, puzzled, rejecting his proposal.
Wu Zhangkong, however, fell into contemplation. After a long pause, he spoke:
"I'll allow you to participate alone. But if you lose, it will prove that teamwork outweighs individual strength. In that case, you must resign as vice monitor and complete double the workload of a working student every month."
"Teamwork outweighs individual strength?" Shen Yi was baffled. What kind of reasoning is this? She couldn't understand why her senior brother would agree.
"Deal. Thank you, Teacher Wu." With that, Bai Xu left.
"Shen Yi, back at Eastsea Academy, Bai Xu's teacher was Leng Jiuming—a former Shrek student, likely one year our senior. Does that name ring a bell?" Wu Zhangkong explained.
"Leng Jiuming… I think I heard of him when he entered the inner court. Wasn't he the one who couldn't grasp the significance of the Shrek Seven Monsters? He failed the inner court exam back then. So Bai Xu is…"
"Mm. A legacy of ideology. Bai Xu wants to prove his teacher's beliefs. Let him try. If he loses, it'll be beneficial for both him and the class."
---
During Bai Xu's brief absence, tension once again filled the classroom. The arrival of Ye Xinglan and Xu Lizhi barely caused a ripple. Instead, Zheng Yiran, Wu Siduo, and Luo Guixing's repeated provocations against Tang Wulin turned the lecture platform into a stage.
Ironically, this very scene piqued Ye Xinglan's interest, leading her to join Tang Wulin's team at his invitation.
Tang Wulin turned to face the scattered students and declared loudly:
"I believe everyone can see the situation clearly. I never intended to monopolize the monitor position—I earned it through my own strength. Since some believe I'm unworthy, fine. Let this tournament determine whether I deserve this role."
He paused, his gaze sweeping over Wu Siduo, Luo Guixing, Xu Yucheng, Yang Nianshu, and Zheng Yiran in the distance. His eyes suddenly took on a faint golden hue, his pupils narrowing slightly as an overwhelming aura surged forth:
"If my team loses, I'll voluntarily resign as monitor. But if we win—from then on, no one is to waste my time with nonsense!"
Click.
Bai Xu happened to step into the classroom at that moment, witnessing the scene with a hint of resignation. He walked up to Tang Wulin and whispered:
"Teacher Wu has approved it. I'm registering as a one-man team."
"What?! You're competing alone?" Tang Wulin asked in a hushed, astonished tone.
"Mm. Looking forward to our match."
After delivering the message, Bai Xu left as class ended.
Tang Wulin glanced at Gu Yue beside him. "Gu Yue, will you join us?"
"Fine, I'm in. I hope we can defeat Bai Xu. Honestly, I'd love to beat him—even if it's through teamwork." Gu Yue's eyes gleamed with anticipation as she watched Bai Xu's retreating figure. She wanted to gauge the true extent of his strength.
"Then let's give it our all!"
"Let's disband." After collecting all team registrations, Tang Wulin exited the classroom, followed by Gu Yue, Xie Xie, Xu Xiaoyan, Xu Lizhi, and Ye Xinglan.
Xu Xiaoyan couldn't help but ask, "Gu Yue, isn't Bai Xu being way too overconfident by going solo? He's strong, but not strong enough to take on a team of six or seven, right?"
Xie Xie interjected, "Hard to say. Have any of you seen Bai Xu go all out?"
The question instantly plunged everyone into silence.
Ye Xinglan turned to Tang Wulin. "This Bai Xu… is he really that strong?"
Tang Wulin nodded gravely. "Very. When we stormed the tower together, he could instantly kill any soul beast under three thousand years without breaking a sweat. Compared to him, I'd probably fall short in speed."
The memory of Bai Xu annihilating the Thunder Beast sent chills down Tang Wulin's spine—it was almost as fast as Gu Yue's teleportation.
In terms of raw power, he was confident.
Now, with his Golden Dragon Scales enhancing his defense, the key to victory lay in control. If they could suppress Bai Xu's speed advantage, victory was assured!
---
"Huh?" Tang Wulin stared at Shen Yi in disbelief, struggling to process her words.
"Why, Teacher Shen? Why can't Ye Xinglan participate in the class tournament?" he pressed urgently.
The pressure was already immense—the five prodigies and Bai Xu lurking on the sidelines. Barring Ye Xinglan from the competition was a devastating blow to their team.
"Don't ask me why. There's no explanation. The reorganization of the mecha teams is approved—on the condition that Ye Xinglan sits this one out. Go prepare. Time's running out."
---
"Even if you defeated me at the start of the semester, this time you're alone. Can a one-man team even be called a team?" Wu Siduo suddenly approached Bai Xu's seat after class, seemingly trying to reclaim her pride.
Bai Xu gave her a faint glance, then looked past her at the others. "Save the trash talk for after the match. I'm not here for petty arguments. Everything will be settled on the stage."
The five of them still harbored fear toward Bai Xu. After all, he had single-handedly withstood Wu Siduo's Spirit Fusion Skill. In a one-on-one, they'd undoubtedly be crushed.
"Fine."
"Wow, they didn't even dare talk back to you, Bai Xu!" Xu Xiaoyan remarked in amazement, watching the usually bold quintet shrink before him.
"Doesn't matter. I'm already studying our second-year opponents," Bai Xu joked—a rare moment of levity.
