Chapter 101 - A King Without a Throne

Silence.

Not the kind that comes from fear alone—

but the kind that comes from something breaking.

Inside people.

Inside reality.

Inside Kuro.

"…My… what?" Lucien whispered.

[Oh, this just got complicated.]

Kuro didn't move.

Couldn't move.

The creature remained kneeling in the shattered doorway, chains pooling around its massive form like coiled serpents.

Its silver eyes never left him.

Not hostile.

Not hungry.

Loyal.

That was worse.

Kuro's chest tightened.

"I think… you've got the wrong person."

The creature didn't react.

"My king," it repeated, voice low and unwavering.

Mika stepped forward instantly.

Putting himself between Kuro and the creature.

"No."

Simple.

Sharp.

Protective.

The creature's gaze shifted.

For the first time—

it acknowledged Mika.

The air grew heavier.

"…Step aside."

Mika didn't even blink.

"No."

Lucien whispered loudly,

"Wow. We are really committing to this strategy, huh."

[It's working so far.]

The chains around the creature shifted.

Metal scraped.

A warning.

"You stand before your sovereign."

Mika's grip tightened on his sword.

"And you're standing in my way."

The temperature dropped.

Kuro felt it again—

that pull.

But different this time.

Not dragging him away—

calling him forward.

Inviting.

Recognizing.

"…Kuro," Mika said without looking back.

"Don't move."

Kuro swallowed.

"I'm not planning to."

[You are absolutely planning to.]

{I'm not.}

[You're curious.]

{…Maybe a little.}

The creature's voice softened.

"My king… you do not remember."

Kuro's heart skipped.

"…Remember what?"

A pause.

"…Yourself."

Lucien immediately threw his hands up.

"OH GREAT—ANOTHER ONE—EVERYONE KEEPS SAYING THAT—WHAT DOES THAT MEAN?!"

[We should start a list.]

Mika didn't move.

Didn't let Kuro pass.

"Explain."

The creature's gaze returned to him.

"You are not permitted to question me."

Mika's voice dropped.

Cold.

"And you are not permitted to talk to him like that."

The corridor tensed again.

Kuro stepped forward.

Just one step.

Mika's arm shot out instantly.

Blocking him.

"Kuro."

"I'm fine."

"You're not."

[He's really not.]

Kuro looked at Mika.

"…It's not like the thing outside."

Mika's jaw tightened.

"That doesn't make it safe."

"I know."

A pause.

"…But it's not trying to take me."

That much was true.

The creature hadn't moved.

Hadn't reached.

Hadn't pulled.

It just… waited.

Like it already belonged to him.

Kuro gently pushed Mika's arm down.

"…Let me talk to it."

Mika didn't let go immediately.

Their eyes met.

A silent argument.

A familiar one.

Then—

Slowly—

Mika stepped aside.

But not far.

Never far.

Lucien leaned toward him.

"…You're handling this surprisingly well."

"I'm not."

[He's absolutely not.]

Kuro stepped closer.

Each step made the chains shift slightly.

Not in threat.

In anticipation.

He stopped a few feet away.

Close enough to see the details now.

The creature wasn't just large—

it was ancient.

Scars etched across its dark form.

Runes burned into its chains.

Power pressed against the air around it like gravity.

"…Who are you?" Kuro asked.

The creature lowered its head further.

"I am bound."

"…That's not a name."

"I do not require one."

Lucien whispered,

"I don't like that answer."

[No one does.]

Kuro frowned.

"…Then what are you to me?"

The creature was silent for a moment.

Then—

"I was created to serve you."

The words hit like a physical force.

Kuro's breath caught.

"…I didn't create anything."

"You did."

The answer came without hesitation.

Without doubt.

Mika stepped forward again slightly.

"That's impossible."

The creature didn't look at him.

"It is truth."

Kuro's head spun.

"…When?"

"When you were whole."

Silence.

Heavy.

Dangerous.

Lucien slowly backed up.

"Okay I'm starting to see a pattern here and I don't like it."

[Pattern: everything is worse than expected.]

Kuro's voice came quieter now.

"…If I was whole…"

He swallowed.

"…Then what am I now?"

The creature's eyes softened—

just slightly.

"Divided."

The word echoed.

Familiar.

Too familiar.

Incomplete.

Divided.

Fragment.

Piece.

Kuro clenched his hands.

"…And the thing in the sky?"

The creature's chains tightened.

"…What remains."

Silence fell again.

Mika's expression darkened.

"So that thing…"

"…was him?" Lucien finished.

[Oh.]

Kuro's chest tightened painfully.

"No."

The word came out sharper than expected.

"I'm not that."

The creature lowered its head further.

"You are not yet."

Mika stepped forward instantly.

"That's enough."

The air snapped.

The creature finally reacted.

Not attacking—

but resisting.

"I will not harm him."

"Then stop talking like you own him."

Silence.

Tense.

Unmoving.

Then—

Kuro spoke.

"…Why now?"

The creature stilled.

"…Why wake up now?"

A pause.

Then—

"Because you called."

Kuro froze.

"…I didn't."

"You did."

The creature's gaze deepened.

"When you refused the other half… you awakened what remained loyal."

Everything went still.

Even Elvastia didn't speak.

For once.

Kuro's voice dropped.

"…So there's two sides."

"Yes."

"…And you're one of them."

"I am yours."

The words landed heavily.

Possessive—

but not in the same way.

Different.

Bound.

Chosen.

Mika didn't like it.

That much was obvious.

"…He doesn't belong to anyone."

The creature didn't argue.

It just said—

"…Then he will choose."

Kuro's breath caught.

Choice.

Again.

Always choice.

Lucien rubbed his face.

"I'm starting to miss when our biggest problem was getting food."

[Those were simpler times.]

Kuro looked between them all.

The creature.

Mika.

Lucien.

The broken door.

The glowing ruins.

The storm still waiting above.

"…What happens now?"

The creature answered first.

"You decide."

Mika said it next.

"We protect you."

Lucien added—

"…We panic slightly but in a supportive way."

[Accurate.]

Kuro let out a shaky breath.

The weight didn't disappear.

The fear didn't vanish.

But something else settled in its place.

Not certainty.

Not confidence.

Just—

ground.

Something to stand on.

"…Then we don't run."

Mika nodded immediately.

"Never."

Lucien hesitated—

then nodded too.

"…Okay. But if we do run, I'm going first."

[Of course you are.]

Kuro almost smiled.

Then looked back at the creature.

"…Stand up."

The chains rattled.

The creature hesitated—

then obeyed.

Slowly.

Carefully.

Massive.

But controlled.

Waiting.

For him.

And for the first time—

Kuro understood something clearly.

Whatever he used to be—

Whatever he was meant to be—

That didn't matter right now.

Because here—

in this moment—

with Mika beside him

and Lucien behind him—

He wasn't a king.

He wasn't a fragment.

He wasn't incomplete.

He was just—

Kuro.

And somehow—

that was enough to make even monsters kneel.
