Chapter 9 - SECRETS OF ELENAI.

Darkness wasn't silent.

It pulsed with whispers, memories not his own, shadows stitched together by pain and magic.

Ryon opened his eyes with a gasp.

He was no longer in the shrine.

Or anywhere physical at all.

He stood inside a dreamscape, suspended in floating light. Above him swirled massive rings of chained symbols—the curse itself—and below lay a pit of writhing spirits, weeping, whispering, reaching up with skeletal fingers.

At the center stood Elenai, glowing like a candle caught in a storm.

"You're inside my memory," she said calmly. "Or what's left of it."

Ryon turned slowly. "What are you?"

Warning: Emotional resonance may cause side effects.

Elenai lifted her hands, and the air shimmered. A scene unfolded—hazy but real.

A girl, younger and frightened, stood in a ceremonial hall surrounded by chanting women. Her robes were clean, her eyes full of tears.

Then came the Matriarch.

A beautiful, terrifying woman with gold-painted lips and a blade that glowed black.

> "Do you vow to remain pure?"

"Do you vow to never know man, magic, or rebellion?"

"Do you vow to serve until your soul burns to ash?"

The young Elenai nodded once. And the blade carved a rune across her chest.

Ryon flinched as the memory pulsed through him.

Elenai turned to him in the dream.

"Thirty girls were chosen. Not to serve. But to seal the curse."

"Seal it?" Ryon asked. "You mean the virgin souls—"

"We are the curse's lock," she said. "Our pain feeds the system. Keeps the South from crumbling… and keeps the truth hidden."

> System Alert: Hidden Lore Unlocked – The Cursebound Maidens

30 chosen souls were bound by divine rite to stabilize the Matriarch's ascension.

Their torment is directly tied to the Southern Empire's magical supremacy.

Liberation threatens the balance of power.

Ryon's blood ran cold.

"Then why are you helping me?"

Elenai's eyes gleamed. "Because you're not from here. You weren't meant to carry this burden. And because…"

She stepped closer.

"…I want to be free."

She touched his chest again. The runes there flared.

> Soul Fragment Absorbed

[Elenai – Progress: 16%]

Curse Timer Extended: +6 Hours

Virgin Souls Freed: 1 / 30

Ryon gasped as he was ripped back into the waking world—

He jolted upright on the cold stone floor of the shrine.

The altar fire was gone. The priestess too.

Only silence remained.

And yet… something was different.

The curse runes on his arms were less bright. His chest felt lighter. The pressure behind his eyes had eased.

> System Update: Virgin Soul Redeemed – Temporary Curse Reversal

Total Time Remaining: 6 Days, 4 Hours

New Quest Branch: "Liberate the 30" – Progress 1 / 30

He stood slowly.

As he turned to leave, a single white feather floated down from above.

He caught it without thinking.

> [Item Acquired: Elenai's Feather – Can summon memory of priestess once per day.]

Ryon clenched it in his palm.

And for the first time since awakening in this cursed land—he didn't feel completely helpless.

Back in the Light

When he emerged into the upper halls of the fortress, morning had fully broken. Sisters walked the halls, glancing at him with the usual mix of confusion and suspicion.

But one figure waited near the training yard gate.

Seyna.

Arms folded. Foot tapping.

"You disappeared," she said.

"Needed air," Ryon replied, trying to sound casual.

She didn't press further. But she studied him closely—too closely.

"You look… different," she muttered.

"Is that a compliment?"

Seyna shrugged. "Don't make me regret liking you."

Ryon smirked. "Too late."

She punched him lightly on the arm—hard enough to bruise someone normal. For him, it was a strange kind of affection.

"Come on. Training today includes spell deflection."

He followed, the feather tucked into his sleeve, the curse slightly weakened, and his bond with one of the thirty virgin souls started.

The first thread was unraveling.

And he was ready to pull the next.
