Chapter 7 - Chapter - 1 - A Pact Forged with Ashes

"No! Don't let them! Don't put me to sleep—please!"

My mind clawed at the fading light. Panic thundered in my chest, louder than any war drum, more real than any prophecy.

They were coming.

For her—

For my Jane.

The darkness twisted around me. I felt its chill ripple across my skin. It was hungry. Merciless. Patient.

The world tilted.

And then—the silence broke.

Aetheris's voice, cold and steady, cut through the darkness like a silver blade.

"At last. He sleeps. Now we need not fear."

Lord Noire: "We both lost the war. Neither god nor demon can claim Everland as their own."

Aetheris: "True. The land lies broken, and its people fractured. Balance must be preserved."

Lord Noire: "So what then? Do we continue this endless war in shadows and blood?"

Aetheris: "No. I, Aetheris, the Prime Moon God, decree a new order."

Lord Noire: "Speak it, then."

Aetheris's gaze fell upon the unconscious Shadow Lord.

"Everland shall remain free from absolute rule… unless Luka, the Shadow Lord, sires an heir with a magical maiden of Everland of his choosing."

He paused.

"Luka carries a divine moon shard where a mortal heart should be. He is cunning, eternal, bound to powers that even you, Lord Noire, could never wholly command. Yet within him stirs something deeper than shadow—something older. His blood is the one thread through which demons may finally take root in Everland."

Noire's eyes narrowed.

Lord Noire: "A child born of shadow and magic. So demons take root—not by war, but by blood."

Aetheris: "Exactly. Through that heir, a new harmony may exist between the demons and the magical clans already rooted in Everland."

Lord Noire: "A pact forged not through conquest, but through blood."

He smiled faintly.

"I accept."

Aetheris: "Then let it be so. The fate of Everland lies in their bloodline."

But Selene, the Moon Goddess who walked in silver silence, had seen what the others had not.

She saw the danger.

Not in Luka himself—

but in his heart.

If Luka ever loved deeply enough to father an heir, Everland would belong to the abyss.

And there was only one person capable of making the Shadow Lord love that deeply.

Jane.

So Selene struck not at Luka, but at the fragile light he clung to.

With whispers soft as venom, she turned Aetheris's hand.

Selene: "My deity… we cannot allow those filthy demons to rule over Everland."

Aetheris turned toward her. Uncertainty flickered across his face.

Selene stepped closer.

Selene: "Let us bestow Jane's powers among the seven magical clans of Everland as blessings from us. They will be grateful—and forever bound to our names."

She gently squeezed his hand.

Selene: "And as for Jane… cast her out. Let her serve us as a mere mortal, stripped of her powers and memories. Let her forget her past. Let her forget everything she was."

Her voice softened, almost sorrowful.

Selene: "This way, the Shadow Lord will carry heartbreak too deep to sire an heir. He will hesitate. He will withdraw. And the demons will never gain a foothold in Everland."

Aetheris studied her for a long moment.

Her plan was cruel.

But perhaps cruelty was the price of balance.

Finally, he spoke.

Aetheris: "Your plan is cruel… but it may be the only way."

He turned toward the gathering darkness.

"Summon them all. Let the proclamation be made."

The air cracked like thunder.

Above Bell Mountain, jagged peaks clawed toward a sky drowned in storm clouds.

Luka stood at the center of it all, still unaware of the snare tightening around him.

Beside him, Jane was bound in celestial chains. They glowed against her skin with a cold, merciless light.

She struggled.

The chains did not yield.

One by one, the seven clans of Everland appeared, summoned by a power far beyond their own.

The ground rumbled beneath their feet.

Then Aetheris's voice rolled across the mountain.

"The war is over."

Silence descended.

The gathered clans stared upward, their breath caught between awe and fear.

Aetheris: "To celebrate the beginning of this new era, I, Aetheris, Prime Moon God, and Moon Goddess Selene shall bestow magical power upon you all."

A shimmering wave of light swept across the clans.

One by one, they felt something awaken within their veins.

A blessing.

Or perhaps a chain.

Aetheris's gaze shifted toward the maidens.

Aetheris: "Lord Noire brings a very special gift for the magical maidens of Everland."

His voice grew heavier.

"The maiden who bears an heir to the Shadow Lord shall be crowned Queen of Neverland."

A murmur rippled through the clans.

Promise.

Ambition.

Fear.

Luka's heart hammered against his ribs.

He looked toward Jane.

She met his gaze.

For a moment, neither spoke.

Then the celestial chains around her brightened.

Jane understood.

Whatever happened next, they were being torn apart.

Aetheris raised his hands.

Selene mirrored him.

Together, they opened a portal.

Its edges rippled like liquid moonlight, twisting with enough power to sever the past from the present.

Aetheris looked directly at Jane.

"Jane."

His voice was grave.

Final.

"You shall be cast into Mortal Land, stripped of your powers and your memories."

Jane's eyes widened.

Selene spoke more softly.

Selene: "Your past will wash away. You will live as a mortal, alone and unaware of the shadows and light that once bound you."

Jane stared at Luka.

Confusion warred with fear.

But beneath it all, there was defiance.

She would not give them the satisfaction of seeing her break.

The portal pulled harder.

Before Jane could be taken, Aetheris turned toward Lord Noire.

His voice became a thunderous decree.

Aetheris: "No demon may set foot in Everland until the Shadow Lord's heir is born."

Selene smiled.

Selene: "And when that day comes, the clans will greet you with one voice."

She looked toward Noire.

"Long live King Noire, the true king of Everland."

Noire's smile widened.

The portal swallowed Jane.

For one final instant, her eyes remained fixed on Luka.

Then she was gone.

The portal snapped shut.

Silence returned to Bell Mountain.

Aetheris and Selene vanished into the clouds.

The air grew cold.

Thick with shadow.

From the darkness emerged Lord Noire.

His presence seemed to swallow the light around him.

He approached Luka and placed one hand on his shoulder.

Luka's eyes fluttered open.

The weight of sleep lifted from his mind, but something inside his chest felt impossibly heavy.

Noire's voice was low.

"You are awake."

Luka struggled to sit.

"What happened?"

Noire watched him for a moment before answering.

"All demons—and every creature bound to the shadows, including myself—are forbidden from entering Everland until you sire an heir."

Luka stared at him.

Then slowly, his gaze moved across the mountain.

Empty.

Jane was gone.

Noire continued.

"That means we are trapped. Bound to the heart of Mortal Land."

Luka's expression hardened.

"Where is she?"

Noire's smile was almost imperceptible.

"She lives there."

A pause.

"Stripped of her magic. Mortal. Alone."

Something inside Luka cracked.

Noire leaned closer.

"If you do not sire an heir soon, I and my demons will find her."

His voice dropped to a whisper.

"We will torment her. Tear her apart."

Luka's fists clenched.

Noire released his shoulder.

"The clock is ticking. Your choice will decide not only your fate, but the fate of Everland itself."

Then he disappeared into the shadows.

Luka was alone.

The gods were gone.

The demons were gone.

Jane was gone.

Rage settled into his chest like a second heart.

A bitter taste of salt and blood filled his mouth.

He rose.

Then he stripped himself bare.

Not from shame.

Not from surrender.

Defiance.

He stood upon the shore and dared the world to challenge him.

Dared the sea to deny his throne.

No one came.

They all knew his wrath.

The sea bent to his will.

Shadows devoured anyone foolish enough to test him.

So they watched.

Hungry.

Eyes followed the impossible figure standing beneath the moon.

Luka eventually collapsed onto the silvered sand.

The tide kissed his skin.

Wet hair clung to his forehead.

One hand curled against his chest.

The other held a feather.

It glowed faintly in the darkness.

Despite the seawater, it remained warm.

He didn't stir.

He only dreamed.

Of her.

The ocean cradled him like an unwilling accomplice.

The mermaids were the first to find him.

They rose from the lagoon in ripples of moonlight, their dark hair floating around their faces.

Their eyes gleamed with hunger.

"Look at him," one whispered. "He's divine."

"He's dangerous," another replied.

She studied the sleeping Shadow Lord.

"I can feel it. Ancient power… sleeping inside him."

A third smiled.

"I'll wake it."

"Maybe I'll be the one."

The first mermaid laughed softly.

"You always want the cursed ones."

"Because cursed ones are always chosen."

Her eyes burned with ambition.

"And I want to be chosen."

They circled Luka like predators.

They all knew the truth.

His child would open the gate.

His blood would break the chains.

His body would bring them power.

To them, he wasn't a boy.

He was a throne of flesh.

And they would kill to sit upon it.

But the one he wanted was gone.

The one who had defied gods and demons alike for him.

The one who had once stood beside him against everything.

Jane.

Stripped of her magic.

Cast into the mortal world.

Luka could remember only fragments of her now.

A laugh.

A pair of eyes.

A hand in his.

A feather.

Nothing more.

A hiss became a snarl.

His eyes opened.

The mermaids froze.

Luka rose from the sand, water sliding from his body like liquid moonlight.

When he spoke, even the sea seemed to listen.

"Each of you will have your chance to bear my heir."

The tide shivered.

"But first…"

His gaze moved across them.

"I must find her."

His voice hardened.

"The one who betrayed me."

He looked toward the darkness beyond the lagoon.

"We swore to kill for each other, never each other."

His jaw tightened.

"Now… one of us must die."

The mermaids stared at him.

Luka spread his arms.

A king in exile.

"The one who leads me to her—who secures my vengeance—shall be crowned Queen of the Dark Realms."

The water rippled.

The mermaids fell silent.

Then—

something moved beneath the black surface.

The water parted.

She emerged.

Nerissa.

The Siren Princess.

Born from the Leviathan's last sorrow.

She did not bow.

She did not kneel.

She rose from the black water with the confidence of someone who had never learned to fear kings.

A slow smile curved across her lips.

"Only your child," she purred, "will have the honor of calling me mother."

Her fingers drifted toward her stomach.

"And when he is born, my Dark Lord, your next heir will grow here."

She smiled.

"In me."

The promise hung between them.

Luka's expression did not change.

Nerissa had mistaken desire for power.

That was her first mistake.

But before she could seize the Dark Lord's attention—

the waters rumbled.

The mermaids vanished beneath the surface.

The sirens hissed and retreated toward the lagoon's edge.

Shadows curled around Luka's feet.

Then—

a voice cut through the mist, cocky and sharp as a harpoon.

"For the love of my eyes, cover yourself, oh mighty Dark Lord."

The waters parted.

A ship emerged from the fog, its black sails slicing across the moonlit sky.

At the helm stood a man with a grin that suggested he feared absolutely nothing.

The sea itself seemed to recoil from his arrival.

The one name it feared to whisper—

Captain Jack Crow.
