In another place, a girl was thrown out of the black portal. She opened her eyes in a burning field.
Flames rolled across the dry grass, carried by wind. Black smoke rose to the sky. She coughed and stumbled backward, nearly tripping over a scorched corpse nearby.
The body wore armor, melted metal. The face was gone. She looked down at her own hands, which were bare and burned. Her body shook, from the heat. Sweat poured from her skin. Her legs nearly buckled.
Suddenly, as if something clicked inside her, her fingertips glowed.

Without knowing how, she raised her arm. A shimmer of force pulsed out from her body. The fire around her bent away from her in a sudden burst, clearing the space around her.
This formed a temporary dome. She took a deep breath, trying to stay focused. She only had one thought in her mind.
"I can't die here."
She ran, not fast enough as her legs were still weak. But the ability helped her. Each time the fire started to come close to her, she repelled it. It bought her space, time, and a little hope.
She found a crumbled ruin at the edge of the field; the remains of a stone temple half buried under ash. Inside, she rested for some time. The heat was less intense here.
She waited for night, rationing her strength. When the firestorms slowed, she started to move again.
She was smart, she was moving very carefully. She even found a broken spear buried under a corpse and sharpened the point with a stone.
The second day passed without any direct danger. She survived longer than the first bearer. But as the night fell, the sky cracked. Literally the space in the sky cracked.
A sharp tear split through the sky above her, like paper ripping. From it, a glowing figure stepped out, silent as death.
It didn't have a face, no feet. Just floating robes and burning hands. She backed away, raising her arms.
The force pulsed again, Repulse Flame. But the being did not use any fire. It raised a hand, her body froze. Not because of ice or pressure. But in time.
She couldn't move. The being floated towards her, reached into her chest, and pulled something invisible out.
She collapsed instantly, and started to vanish with a gust of air. The being also vanished the same way it came.
