Chapter 5 - CHAPTER 5: THE TEXT OF TIME

Weeks passed in a blur of lectures, assignments, and quiet moments of reflection. The early excitement of meeting Joel had softened into a comfortable rhythm between them. Their late-night study sessions had become a staple of her routine. Vanessa found herself looking forward to them more than she cared to admit. It wasn't just that Joel was an excellent tutor; it was the way his presence had become a part of her life. His laughter, the small gestures of care, and the quiet encouragements filled the spaces in her life that she didn't even know were empty.

It had been a month since their first dinner together. A month since she had allowed herself to feel something for him, even if it was small, even if it was still wrapped in layers of doubt.

Today, however, the weight of uncertainty was lifted, even if only for a little while. The biology test she had been dreading was finally here, a course borrowed from Joel's department. She had prepared for weeks, but it was Joel's help that made all the difference. His quiet, patient explanations and the way he had broken down difficult concepts had given her a new sense of confidence. Every night he stayed up with her, explaining topics with a clarity she couldn't find in her textbooks, was a step toward something she hadn't realized she was capable of—trusting someone fully.

Vanessa walked into the lecture hall that morning feeling surprisingly calm. She glanced at the clock on the wall—only five minutes before the exam would begin. Her palms were slightly clammy, but the nerves were quieter today. She had studied. She had worked hard, and Joel's teachings were fresh in her mind. For once, she wasn't consumed by the usual doubts.

The room buzzed with the low murmurs of her classmates, but Vanessa tuned them out. She took a deep breath and scanned the rows of desks. As her eyes landed on an empty seat at the back, she walked toward it, her heart beating steadily in her chest. She set her bag down beside her and adjusted the collar of her blouse, trying to shake the last remnants of nervousness.

A moment later, the lecturer entered, and the room fell silent. Papers were handed out, and within minutes, the test began. Vanessa's pen hovered above the first question for only a moment before her mind snapped into focus. The topics that had once seemed so complex now appeared simple, manageable. Every formula, every concept Joel had patiently explained over the last few weeks, clicked into place. She didn't have to think twice about the answers. They came naturally.

The clock ticked down, but Vanessa didn't rush. She took her time, answering each question with confidence. Every time she looked at the clock, there was still time left. She could feel the weight of her preparation behind each word she wrote, and for the first time in a long time, she wasn't afraid of failing. She knew, deep down, that she was going to ace this.

When the exam ended, Vanessa stepped out of the hall with a sense of relief and pride that she had never felt before after a test. The usual sense of dread about waiting for her results was gone. For once, she felt as though she had truly done her best.

As she walked toward the main entrance of the building, she couldn't help but smile to herself. The warmth from her study sessions with Joel lingered in her thoughts. She remembered their late nights, the way he had smiled at her when she finally understood a particularly tricky topic. How he had patiently corrected her mistakes, never making her feel inadequate. It wasn't just about academics—it was about the way he made her feel seen.

Her phone buzzed in her pocket, interrupting her thoughts. She fished it out, expecting a message from her roommate, Tayo, or perhaps a random social media notification, but her heart skipped a beat when she saw Joel's name.

"You got this, Vanessa. I'm proud of you already. Can't wait to hear how it went! – J"

Her chest tightened at the simplicity of his words. It was always the little things that made her smile—the fact that he noticed, that he cared. The connection between them had blossomed in ways she hadn't expected, and she couldn't help but feel grateful for it.

She quickly typed out a reply: "Thanks, Joel. I feel good about it. Couldn't have done it without you."

Her phone buzzed almost immediately, and she saw his response: "You did all the work, I just gave you the tools. I'll be here to celebrate with you when you get that perfect score. 😏"

Vanessa's heart fluttered at his words, her smile widening as she tucked her phone back into her pocket. She had always been hesitant to let someone get close, but Joel had shown her a different way of being. A way that was gentle, patient, and encouraging. The trust she had been so afraid to give was no longer as daunting. With every message, every smile, every late-night study session, Vanessa was slowly learning that opening up didn't mean vulnerability—it meant strength.

As she walked back to her hostel, Vanessa felt a sense of calm that had eluded her for years. The fear of being let down, of trusting the wrong person, had faded into the background. She wasn't sure what the future held, but in this moment, she felt certain of one thing: she had someone who believed in her. Someone who cared, not because he had to, but because he genuinely wanted to. And that, in itself, was enough.

The path ahead was still unclear, but for the first time in a long time, Vanessa felt ready to walk it—one step at a time.
