Chapter 50 - Media Attention

The morning after the Filmfare Awards of December 1991, Bombay woke up to a new sensation.

As newspaper vendors cycled through the streets shouting headlines, thousands of fans grabbed copies before heading to work. Film magazines sold out within hours, and by noon, almost every tea stall, barber shop, and college canteen in the city was discussing one name.

'Adil Ali.' His smiling photograph, standing beside Amitabh Bachchan with the Filmfare Black Lady in his hand, dominated front pages.

SCREEN: " 19-Year-Old Wonder! Adil Ali Creates Filmfare History!"

Filmfare Magazine: "A Star Is Born: Adil Ali Becomes Youngest Best Debut Actor Winner!"

Cine Blitz: "Move Over Veterans, The New Prince Has Arrived!"

Stardust: "From Heartthrob To Filmfare Hero, Adil Ali Rules Bollywood At 19!"

Movie Magazine: "King of Advertisements, King of Hearts, Now King of Debutants!"

Star & Style: "Girls Scream, Producers Queue Up, Filmfare Crowns Adil Ali!"

Mayapuri: "Handsome Hero Steals Filmfare Night!"

Junior G: "Is Adil Ali Bollywood's Next Superstar?"

Even gossip columns joined the frenzy.

"Which Lucky Actress Will Win Adil Ali's Heart?"

"Bombay's Most Eligible Bachelor Wins Big!"

"Can Anyone Stop The Adil Mania?"

By afternoon, his house resembled a festival. Hundreds of fans stood outside carrying flowers, magazines, and posters. Some had skipped college, while others had taken leave from work just to catch a glimpse of him. Whenever he appeared on the balcony, screams erupted below.

"ADIL!"

"WE LOVE YOU!"

"SHOW US THE TROPHY!"

Laughing, he raised the Black Lady above his head. The crowd exploded. Everyone wanted to congratulate the nineteen-year-old sensation.

Around noon, the phone rang.

He smiled immediately upon hearing the voice. "Congratulations, Mr. Filmfare Winner," said Madhuri Dixit, her tone full of happiness.

Adil laughed. "Thank you. You sound happier than me."

"Of course I am," she teased. "Do you know how proud I felt watching you on that stage? Everyone around me was saying, 'Look at him, he's still nervous!'"

Adil chuckled. "I was nervous."

"I know," she laughed. "But your speech was beautiful. Even my parents loved it."

They spoke for nearly half an hour. Madhuri couldn't stop teasing him about becoming a "serious award-winning actor."

"Don't become arrogant now, Mr. Filmfare." Madhuri said.

"I'll try not to, especially in front of someone who had already won best actress award" he replied. Madhuri laughed.

They chatted for half an hour before hanging up, Right at that time, another call came.

This time it was Aishwarya Rai. "Congratulations, Adil."

"Thank you, Aish." Adil replied.

"So, Filmfare winner now?" she said jokingly.

"I am still trying to understand what happened." Adil said.

She laughed softly. "You deserve it. Nineteen years old and already making history. That's impressive."

"History?" Adil smiled.

"Of course. Do you know how many people dream of this?"

They chatted for a while before she wished him more success and hung up.

Yet despite all the celebration around him, Adil himself felt strangely calm. Winning Filmfare had been one dream. But another chapter of his life required attention.

Months ago, while the world had focused on his films and advertisements, he had quietly made an investment in Soviet rubles during the political and economic turmoil in the Soviet Union. The time had come to close that investment and collect the rewards. Although he can do it via Telephone but he decided to go to Switzerland himself to avoid media attention.

That evening, after finishing yet another interview, he picked up the telephone and dialed a number he knew by heart.

A familiar voice answered. "Hello?"

"Madhuri?" Adil said.

"Yes, Mr. Filmfare Winner?" She said.

He smiled and answered."I was thinking about taking a vacation."

"Oh? Where?"

"Switzerland."

There was a brief silence. Then she laughed. "Again? You really loves Switzerland."

"Perhaps," he said.

"Are you going alone" Madhuri asked. "No." Adil replied.

"So who's going?" She asked.

"You."

Silence followed. Then another laugh and asked. "Just the two of us?"

"Yes. No shootings. No producers. No award functions. Just us." Adil replied.

Her voice softened. "You planned all this already?"

"I've been thinking about it." Adil replied.

"And when were you planning on asking me?" She asked.

"I'm asking now." Adil said.

She smiled on the other side. "You know, Adil Ali, after winning Filmfare, you're becoming very confident."

"Is that a yes?" Adil asked.

Another silence. Then she answered gently. "Yes."

Adil confirmed. "Really?"

"Really." She said.

"And no second thoughts?" Adil asked.

"No." Madhuri replied.

Outside, fans were still chanting his name. Newspapers were calling him the future. And the industry was celebrating its newest sensation. But none of that mattered to Adil at that moment.

Because in a few days, far away from Bombay and its madness, beneath the snowy skies of Switzerland, he would spend time with the woman he loved.

And neither of them knew that the journey awaiting them would become one of the most beautiful chapters of their lives.
