The Wrecking Ball approached the edge of Sector Zero. The transition was not subtle. The silent, debris-strewn void of the Crossroads gave way to a crackling wall of pure chaos. The Forge of Realities wasn't a nebula; it was an open wound in the multiverse, bleeding creation and destruction in equal measure.
Rivers of molten glass flowed into nothingness, cooling into impossible sculptures before shattering. Stars were born and died in seconds, their billion-year lifecycles condensed into a blinding blink of an eye. Echoes from other realities—the sound of a sword fight, the scent of a blooming field, the glimpse of a city under a twin sun—flickered in and out of existence like ghosts.
"Welcome to God's blender, kids," Jett said, his voice on the bridge filled with a reverent dread. "From here on out, the normal rules no longer apply."
"Leo, we're ready," Kael's voice was calm, but with an underlying tension. He was at a modified sensor station, his cybernetic arm jacked directly into the ship's shield emitters. Sweat gleamed on his brow.
Leo was in the hangar, standing beside the 'Phantom', the scooter's engine humming silently. He held the Pathfinder tightly. The line of light on its screen was no longer stable; it danced and writhed, trying to find a bearing in the chaos.
He took a deep breath, nodding to Jett over the comms. "We're ready."
"Then hold onto your hats!" Jett roared.
The Wrecking Ball didn't enter the Forge; it plunged. The massive ship was hit by a wave of pure force, the sound of twisting metal echoing through the hull. The bridge lights flickered. Alarms blared.
"We're in!" the navigator shouted. "Reality sensors are going haywire! I can't tell what's real and what's an echo!"
The moment they entered, the Hunter's dagger-shaped ship materialized in the middle of the chaos, as if it had always been there. It hovered silently, the blackness of its fuselage a stark contrast to the vibrant creation around it.
"He's here!" Leo yelled. "Begin!"
"With pleasure!" Jett answered. He opened fire, not at the Hunter, but at the environment itself. Mining lasers hit a house-sized crystal, shattering it into a shower of fragments that reflected a thousand different realities. Magnetic harpoons latched onto a ribbon of solidified time, pulling it in front of the Hunter's ship like a makeshift shield. The Wrecking Ball became the loudest, brightest, most annoying target in existence.
While the Hunter's attention was focused on Jett, Kael began his work. "First stable platform projecting!" he shouted. "Three... two... one... Now!"
A shimmering beam of energy shot from the Wrecking Ball, not as a weapon, but as a seed. It hit an empty point in space, and for an instant, the chaos receded. A small, circular platform of stable reality, about ten meters in diameter, formed, an oasis of normalcy in an ocean of madness.
"Go, Leo!"
Leo didn't hesitate. He accelerated the 'Phantom' out of the hangar, the short jump to the platform a gut punch as his scooter passed from the ship's unstable physics to the stability of Kael's projection. He landed with a jolt, his scooter safe for now.
The Hunter's ship moved. It ignored Jett's chaotic barrage. It turned slowly, its dagger-like body pointing directly at the Wrecking Ball.
"It's targeting us!" Jett yelled. "The Anchor weapon is charging!"
"Kael, next one!" Leo commanded.
"Projecting!"
Another beam shot out, creating a second island of safety two hundred meters away. The Pathfinder in Leo's hand showed the way, its line of light stretching from his platform to the next.
Leo gunned the engine, his 'Phantom' leaping into the void between the islands. The journey was disorienting, a fall through nothingness, before landing hard on the second platform.
He was closing in on the Hunter, flanking it while Jett kept its attention. The plan was working.
But the Hunter was smarter.
It didn't fire on the Wrecking Ball. It had been watching. It had analyzed the pattern. It had identified the true threat.
The Hunter's ship turned slightly. Its Reality Anchor weapon didn't aim for Jett's massive ship.
It aimed for the small, insignificant island of stable reality where Leo was about to jump.
"Kael, next platform!" Leo shouted, already accelerating towards the edge of his island.
"Projecting now!"
Kael's beam shot out. The third island began to form.
At the same time, the Hunter's weapon fired.
The line of absolute nothingness sliced through space, not towards Leo, but towards the spot where he was going to be.
Leo was airborne. His 'Phantom' was mid-jump, flying through the void towards the safety of the third platform.
But as the line of nothingness hit it, the platform didn't explode. It simply... ceased to be.
Leo watched his safe harbor get erased from reality in the middle of his leap.
He was airborne, with nowhere to land, his trajectory carrying him directly into the raw, unmaking chaos of the Forge of Realities.
His radio filled with the shouts of Kael and Jett.
But Leo barely heard them. He was falling. And there was no ground.
