Chapter 28: A Trip with Liz & The Cold Case Breakthrough
The quaint little cabin upstate was a world away from the bustling streets of New York City and the demanding schedules of their careers. No paparazzi, no crime scenes, no Barney Stinson. Just the rustle of leaves, the scent of pine, and the quiet, comfortable presence of Liz Olsen.
"This is nice," Liz murmured, curled up next to Adam on a worn armchair by a crackling fireplace. "No scripts, no deadlines, no one asking me to explain the philosophical implications of a sentient cheese. Just... quiet."
Adam smiled, wrapping an arm around her. "I know, right? It's almost unsettling. My brain keeps waiting for Jake to burst in with a new theory about a 'ghost deer' or for Barney to try and sell us a 'legendary' vacation package."
They spent their days hiking through crisp autumn woods, cooking simple meals together, and talking for hours. Liz shared stories from her childhood, her anxieties about the industry, and her quiet dreams for the future. Adam found himself opening up more than he had in years, sharing anecdotes about his past life (sanitized, of course), his observations about the absurdity of this new world, and even some of his internal struggles with his transmigrated identity.
"It's funny," Liz said one evening, as they stargazed from the porch, "I've always been drawn to characters with hidden depths. And you, Adam, you have more hidden depths than the Mariana Trench. It's fascinating."
Adam chuckled. "Just trying to keep things interesting. Wouldn't want you to get bored."
Liz leaned her head on his shoulder. "Never. I love you, Adam."
A warmth spread through Adam, deep and comforting. "I love you too, Liz. More than I thought possible." The [Relationship Status Tracker] hummed quietly, a silent confirmation of what he already knew.

Back at the 99th, the usual chaos resumed, but Adam found himself in a rare lull between major cases. He decided to tackle something that had been nagging at him for months: an old, unsolved cold case. The "Whispering Woods Murder." A young woman had been found dead in a remote park ten years ago, with no witnesses, no clear motive, and a perplexing lack of forensic evidence. The case had stumped generations of detectives.
"The Whispering Woods Murder. I remember this one from the files. It was a classic. The kind of case that haunts a precinct. The [Knowledge & Insight Module] is hinting at a very specific, overlooked detail. Something about the environment, the flora… a unique type of pollen, or a rare soil contaminant."
He pulled the dusty file, spreading the old crime scene photos across his desk. He meticulously re-examined every detail, every photograph, every lab report. He focused on the background of the photos, the seemingly irrelevant details. And then he saw it. In a blurry, out-of-focus corner of one photo, a faint, almost imperceptible discoloration on a patch of moss.
"Captain," Adam said, walking into Holt's office, the old file in his hand. "I think I have a lead on the Whispering Woods Murder."
Holt looked up, a flicker of surprise in his eyes. "Mr. Stiels. That case has been cold for a decade. What have you found?"
"A specific type of lichen," Adam explained, pointing to the photo. "It's a very rare species, only found in a few very specific microclimates. And it was present at the crime scene, but it wasn't native to that part of the woods. It was transferred. And the discoloration on the moss? That's a residue from a very specific, obscure pesticide used only on a handful of commercial plant nurseries in the tri-state area. Our victim wasn't killed in the woods. She was killed somewhere else, and her body was moved. And the killer left a trail of their workplace behind."
Amy Santiago, who had been passing by, stopped dead in her tracks. "A lichen? A pesticide? Mr. Stiels, that's... that's incredible! No one ever thought to look for that!"
Holt's gaze sharpened. "A remarkable deduction, Mr. Stiels. A ten-year-old cold case, cracked by a patch of moss. Proceed with this line of inquiry. Immediately."
Adam's meticulous work and unique insight had finally brought justice to a decade-old mystery.
Jake's POV: "Adam is a cold case wizard! He just looked at some old moss and knew who the killer was! He's like a forensic time traveler! I'm gonna ask him to solve the mystery of who stole my lunch from the fridge last week. Probably Boyle."

Later, Captain Holt approached Adam's desk. "Mr. Stiels. Your dedication to justice, even in the face of seemingly insurmountable odds, is commendable. You are an extraordinary asset to this precinct. Well done."
Adam merely offered a small, knowing smile. "Just trying to keep the woods safe from murderous gardeners, Captain. It's a niche market, but someone's gotta do it."
