Chapter 44 - Chapter 44: S-Rank Mission

Akimichi Torifune thoroughly enjoyed the meal.

Umino Yoru, too, was in high spirits—he had gained invaluable insights.

Throughout the feast, he had secretly kept his Subsonic Radar Technique active, meticulously observing and analyzing the subtle changes in Torifune's body. By comparing and mimicking the process, he finally grasped the underlying principles.

Turns out, the method of stimulating the vagus nerve endings in the intestines with chakra was far more intricate than he had imagined—it even bordered on cellular chakra activation.

The entire process involved multi-layered, high-frequency chakra stimulation, tailored to different cells and neural networks, significantly boosting the efficiency of food energy conversion.

Moreover, this quasi-cellular activation varied in frequency at different stages, affecting intestinal movement, gastric acid secretion, bile production, and enzyme release in distinct ways.

For example:

Early digestion prioritized stomach acid secretion. Post-meal, bile production ramped up instead.

Countless such minute details formed a highly optimized system—one that couldn't be replicated without decades of dedicated research.

Thankfully, having Torifune right in front of him—digesting in real-time—was like copying a jutsu with the Sharingan. Without this reference, developing such a complex digestive system alone would've been impossible.

Now, Yoru realized how crude his earlier version of the digestion technique had been. Not only did it waste energy, but it also overburdened the heart and liver. Prolonged use would've led to physical collapse.

The Akimichi's perfected version, however, was a masterpiece:

Maximized energy conversion efficiency. Balanced bodily strain via an ingenious energy circulation system—powered not by personal chakra, but by freshly digested food energy itself.

"Truly worthy of a secret clan technique," Yoru mused, once again awed by the depth of these ancient shinobi lineages. Even glimpsing a fraction of their knowledge was enlightening.

A Surprising Windfall

"Yoru," Torifune patted his belly and leaned in, lowering his voice. "The mission credits for intercepting those Sand ninjas and retrieving intel from the Land of Wind… they've been finalized."

"Oh?"

*"That intel mission was high-level—it involved a jinchūriki. It's been classified as an S-rank."*

"What? S-rank? And a jinchūriki?!"

Yoru's eyes sharpened, though he feigned ignorance. "I had no idea it was that significant."

Torifune didn't elaborate—jinchūriki were a sensitive topic—but he rubbed his neck sheepishly.

*"Originally, we agreed to split the mission credits 50-50, but… well, you're only getting 30%. I'm taking the lion's share, along with the S-rank completion record. Feels a bit unfair to you."*

"Chief, 30% is more than enough!" Yoru waved it off, grinning. "If you'd just keep looking out for me, I'd happily give you all the credits!"

(Internally, he was ecstatic.)

Mission credits were valuable, but an S-rank completion record?Priceless.

Credits could be grinded through lower-ranked missions, but high-rank records? Those required either luck or life-threatening risks.

Why S-Rank Matters

In the shinobi world, mission records dictated two critical things:

Promotion eligibility (e.g., becoming a Jonin). Access to high-rank jutsu (e.g., A-rank or forbidden techniques).

Under the Second Hokage (Tobirama Senju):

100 C-ranks = 10 B-ranks = 1 A-rank. Persistent grinders could eventually trade up for elite techniques.

After the Third Hokage (Hiruzen Sarutobi) reformed the system:

No more conversions. Only by completing a specific rank could one unlock corresponding jutsu or titles.

Seems fair? Not quite.

This policy widened the gap between clan heirs and ordinary shinobi:

Clan kids had inherited techniques and Jonin mentors, making high-rank missions easier. Lone wolves? Stuck in eternal grinding hell, barred from advancement without connections.

Yoru's Jackpot

Before this, Yoru's entire career—years of blood and sweat—had netted him:

A dozen C-ranks. Two B-ranks. Zero A-ranks.

Now, by sheer luck, he'd landed an S-rank completion—a record most elite Jonin only achieved a handful of times in their lives.

*"With this, I can finally qualify for A-rank jutsu… or even Jonin promotion."*

(Cue internal victory dance.)
