"I didn't turn her," I said, standing up and brushing dirt off my knees. "I found her. And what was I supposed to do, leave her to starve?"
"You were supposed to think about what Aldric would do if he found out you were playing house with her."
The words hit like a physical blow, mostly because Scott was right. Aldric's reaction to finding out about Cat would not be pleasant, for any of us.
He didn't like the concept of vampires banding together like family.
He detested it
Despised it.
But it was too late to change that now, and besides, I'd never been particularly good at making the smart choice when it came to protecting people I cared about.
"Well, lucky for all of us, Aldric sent us here," I said. "So unless you're planning to rat me out—"
"Of course not," Scott snapped. "I'm not a monster, despite what you apparently think of me."
