My hands wouldn't stop shaking.
"Oh my God," I whispered. "We need to get to her. We need to get to her now."
Lucian stiffened beside me, his silver-white hair catching the light as he turned sharply.
His brows pulled tight, lines furrowing his forehead. "What's wrong?"
"It's Ava," I croaked, pressing a trembling palm against my chest as though that would steady the way my heart threatened to hammer itself to death. "She's my best friend. She came to Moonveil some weeks ago."
He frowned. "Wait. She's… in school right now?"
"Yes. With Nickaus."
Lucian's eyes briefly widened before he exhaled slowly, and then placed a firm hand on my shoulder.
"Maeve. Listen to me. You need to calm down. We'll find her. I promise you, we will."
But how could I calm down when all I could picture was Ava's round face twisted in fear, her small frame swallowed in danger she couldn't possibly understand?
What if Nicklaus had done something to her?
