Chapter Six
Reliving the Past
It was getting late in the afternoon as the red Ford raced into town. During the car ride Harry and John decided it might be best to remain quiet, as they didn't want their new friend, Green Girl, to get angry with them asking stupid questions. Without warning, the car stopped in a lay-by for no reason. The Green Girl turned her head towards Harry and John.
'Look, boys,' she said pleasantly. 'I'm going to a friend's house tonight, would it be okay if I dropped you off there, as she doesn't live too far from town?'
'That's fine with us, Green Girl,' Harry laughed to himself as he said her name.
John said nothing, he just sat there looking into space. As Green Girl looked at him, he reminded her of when she had been Stacey Roberts. 'Is John okay, Harry?' she asked, turning back to the steering wheel and driving off.
'Don't worry about John, he's usually shy when it comes to meeting new people, especially women like you.'
Green Girl glanced in the rear view mirror, 'Really, is that right?' When I was your age I was very much like your friend.'
Harry's mouth dropped open. 'Somehow, I find that hard to imagine. What exactly do you mean?' he asked confidently.
Green Girl thought for a moment. 'When I was your age, Harry, before I became the Green Girl, my name was Stacey Roberts. I was like John, quiet, shy, low self-esteem, but that all changed.'
Harry sat up interested in what she was telling them.
'How did it all change for you and how come you have green skin?'
'I was part of an experiment,' she continued. 'Me and so many other civilians, all so that the British military could use us as super soldiers in their next war.' She paused for a moment reflecting on what she had just said. 'I lost my family that day, my old life, the person I used to be and my boyfriend, Ben Fox.' Harry and John sat up saying nothing as they listened carefully to her story.
She became lost in contemplation.
'How terrible. What made you come to Florida?' Harry asked.
Green Girl recovered herself. 'I just wanted to start a new life and leave my old one back in England, free from the military, and not be used as an experiment. Plus, Florida is safe.'
As she said this, Harry and John noticed that she was driving into a small, residential area. There were a number of small and large houses, each with their own garden. After driving for a few minutes, the car stopped outside a large house.
'Here we are, guys,' she said as they jumped out of the car.
Harry looked around at the neighbourhood and smiled. 'This looks like a private estate, God, would you look at the size of that house?'
Green Girl looked amused. 'This isn't too far from town for you is it?'
Harry shook his head. 'This is perfect for us. Thanks for the lift.'
'You're very welcome, boys.'
Waving goodbye to her, they went on their way, as Green Girl headed to the front door of the house and knocked. 'Jennifer, are you in?'
As she waited, the door slowly opened, answered by a young, black woman. Wearing a purple bra and pants, she had medium length hair and light black skin.
'Green Girl,' she said excitedly. 'You're just in time for the next photo shoot, bet you can't wait?'
Green Girl smiled and stepped inside, as she did, a car pulled up on the other side of the road. The driver, a large man wearing a pair of black sunglasses and a trench coat got out. He watched her as she went inside. Once she was out of sight, he pulled a mobile phone from his coat pocket. Dialling, it was answered immediately.
'Boss, this is Powerhouse, I've managed to locate Stacey Roberts aka The Green Girl. What are my orders?'
For a second there was no reply, 'I don't want you to engage her yet, just follow her and remain unseen if you can, Powerhouse?'
Powerhouse smiled. 'Understood, boss.'
Just as he was about to hang up, the man spoke again. 'Once you engage her, Powerhouse. Bring her to me alive and uninjured, it's time that me and Miss Roberts had a chat.'
Powerhouse hung up and returned to the car, waiting f
or the right moment to strike.
