"I don't know why. Even when he did that, I had a feeling he wouldn't hurt humans, so I just waited to see what would happen," Zhu Yuan said, putting a finger to her chin in thought.
Mo Xuan mimicked her pose, but he quickly figured it out. When he used alchemy to erase memories, some emotions would linger. Zhu Yuan must have subconsciously equated the Mysterious Rider with someone she liked, which was why she had been so calm.
As he thought about it, Mo Xuan started to grin. How should he put this? It was like he had been cuckolded by himself. It was a strange feeling.
"By the way, where did Ya go?" Zhu Yuan asked, as if Mo Xuan would know Hoshimi Miyabi's whereabouts. As for whether she was in trouble, Zhu Yuan wasn't worried.
"I don't know," Mo Xuan said with an innocent expression. If he let something slip now, he'd be a real idiot. He had already learned that his girlfriend liked to play these kinds of games.
"Never mind. Thanks to that Mysterious Rider again, so many soldiers were saved without any casualties. It's just that the relationship with the higher-ups is strained now," Zhu Yuan said, deciding not to dwell on it. It wasn't her problem. All she had to do now was go back and write a report, and everything would be over. Even though it wasn't her achievement, another mission had ended with zero fatalities, and her reputation would surely grow.
After the Shiyu defense battle, the personnel from the Public Security Bureau all drove back. Mo Xuan accompanied Zhu Yuan to her office to write the report. They discussed the details and shared the information they had gathered. By the time they finished with the report and other miscellaneous tasks, it was time to go home.
"Mo Xuan, thanks for your hard work. Go home and get some rest," Zhu Yuan said, giving him a simple farewell. This was their daily routine. Even though New Eridu had experienced such a major upheaval today, it only resulted in the Public Security Bureau's phone lines being flooded with calls. Once the crisis passed, the PR department would explain the previous anomaly. If they couldn't explain it, they would blame it on the Hollows. After all, the Hollows couldn't talk back.
"You too," Mo Xuan waved to Zhu Yuan. He noticed she was walking towards her car very slowly, and he felt a strange itch in his heart. He quickly caught up to her. When they were partially hidden by the car, he hugged her.
"Hey, Mo Xuan, this is harassment, you know, making a move on your female superior," Zhu Yuan said, surprised by Mo Xuan's forwardness. But she didn't push him away. Instead, she patted his back. They leaned on each other's shoulders, a feeling she enjoyed.
"You're off the clock. You're not my superior anymore," Mo Xuan said happily. He knew he had made the right choice. Zhu Yuan's slow walk clearly indicated she had something to say but was too shy to say it. Combined with what she had said before about him needing to be more proactive, he went for it. A hero can't back down from a challenge.
"You're so forceful. You didn't even ask for my opinion," Zhu Yuan said, wrapping her arms around Mo Xuan's waist. She didn't mind him being a little forceful sometimes. She had been thinking that their relationship was progressing too slowly and had even worried that he might slip away from her. Knowing that he still cared about her so much put her at ease.
"Sorry, I just wanted to hug you," Mo Xuan held Zhu Yuan tighter.
Zhu Yuan buried her head in his shoulder, breathing in his scent. For someone who risked their life in the Hollows every day, coming back safely from a mission required a way to relieve stress. The best way, of course, was to find a lover and rely on each other. As for the single ones, well, they could go see a therapist.
After the hug, they both smiled with satisfaction. They waved goodbye again and went their separate ways from the Public Security Bureau. Mo Xuan was ecstatic. When he got home, he would have to roll around in his bed with his blanket.
A short while later, Mo Xuan's motorcycle was stopped by Ling in front of the video store. He followed her inside.
"What possessed you? That awful personality from before?" Ling asked, sitting on the sofa with her legs crossed, looking at Mo Xuan. She had been watching the whole thing unfold, and as she watched, she started to feel that something was wrong. If Mo Xuan was that kind of person, she would never have fallen for him.
"No, it's still me," Mo Xuan said, shaking his head. In fact, he had been holding back a lot. If he had acted on his true impulses, there would have been a bloodbath.
"Then why were you teasing people like that? It was funny, I admit. My brother and I were laughing too. But you must have given them some serious psychological trauma," Ling asked curiously. "It's not human, actually. Let me tell you about the lore," Mo Xuan said, suddenly wide awake. He was about to share the details with Ling.
"Wait, you smell like a woman," Ling said, raising her hand to stop him. She leaned in and sniffed his clothes, then frowned.
"Old Ling, what's the point of having such a good nose? No one's going to give you a reward for it. Instead of me, you should be worried about your brother smelling like a woman," Mo Xuan said, amused. He had been smelling Zhu Yuan's scent earlier, but he hadn't intended to bring it back to share with Ling. He playfully tapped her on the head.
"Ha! My brother is a sis-con. He only smells like his little sister,"
"...I didn't expect Zhe to be that kind of person," Mo Xuan said after a moment of contemplation, his expression one of solemn respect.
"That's not it!" Zhe, who had been eavesdropping behind the door, burst in. He really had something to say about this sister of his. The siblings immediately started digging up each other's dirt. Mo Xuan ate melon on the side, feeling a sense of bliss even without transforming.
