Chapter 4 - A Deal with the Devil

"All you need do is grab the object and smear it with your blood. That's all…"

The voice echoed.

Gabriel frowned. His body tensed for a moment. "Some sort of ritual or what?" He conveyed his thoughts once more, a slight grimace forming on his face.

"No. It's more like a medium to enable me to grant you my powers and heal your wounds."

"And then after that... take over my body, right? Gabriel shared his thoughts, gritting his teeth.

"Hehehe. Take over your body?" The voice asked with a scoff. "Do you think a mere mortal like you would be able to handle my powers?"

Before Gabriel could speak, the voice continued, her voice laced with disdain.

"Fine. Not like I'm the one trying to save a city of humans from getting destroyed by those pesky creatures."

"What do you mean?" Gabriel thought echoed loudly.

"Of course. Healing you would grant you access to some fragments of my power, which would be more than enough to wipe those ants off the earth."

"You lying bastard. You're just trying to lure me! I'm not falling for that!"

The voice was a bit low this time around. "Well, it's your loss then. At least, I did try to help. You can die in regret. Not that I care."

The voice sounded a bit faint as if it was fading away.

Gritting his teeth, Gabriel felt the pain resurfaced, feeling the presence fade away. Once again, the cold embrace of death comforted him. This time around, his consciousness was slipping away quickly.

He knew this time around, there was no coming back.

Biting his lip so hard, he had cut himself with blood dripping across his chin.

"Wait!" He called out in his head. "I... I agree."

The voice instantly returned delightful as ever. "As much as I thought! Hurry up then!" Grab the sword before you and then smear it with your blood.

"How do–"

As if reading his mind, he felt his body lighten with pain dwindling down for a moment.

"Quickly grab the sword! This is as much as I can help without being connected."

"It's for the best!" Gritting his teeth, he managed to move one of his hands and placed it on the hilt of the sword.

His hands were already covered in his blood.

A soft glow shone in the darkness as it transferred into Gabriel's body.

"Don't worry, kid, I'll help you make good use of your body. Hehehe!"

There was a moment of silence.

"What! H–How is that possible!" The voice erupted in anger. "How was he able to resist?!"

The glow encompassed Gabriel's body, and slowly, his wound began to heal. His body was slowly regaining strength with his pale face brightening up.

The burden was too much for his already weakened body to take though. His eyes once again fluttered close as he descended into darkness.

"Who would have thought he would possess that." The voice echoed softly, a mixture of awe and confusion in its voice before fading into the darkness.

...

In the centre of a once thriving settlement, now in ruin. Countless creatures moved around the wreckage searching for new prey to feast on.

At the corner of a building, a group of monsters gathered around a torn flesh fighting amongst themselves.

Suddenly from above, a myriad of golden arrows streaked towards them, piercing through their tough hide and skin.

Their painful howl echoed as they dropped dead.

"How sad…" A silver–haired man gently floated to the ground with a soft sigh. "We were too late." He muttered, his expression unreadable.

Three more figures arrived behind him, their expression grim.

"Clear the place and search for survivors." The silver–haired man said.

Instantly, the three figures began work.

The creatures noticing their arrival scurried towards their direction.

Eyes blazing with madness, they lunged at the three humans.

The first one, a dark-haired guy holding a bow, leapt high, avoiding the creatures. Drawing the string of his bow, five arrows flickered to existence, their golden form shimmering under the dark sky.

Letting them loose, they travelled forward, easily piercing through a dozen monsters before fading away. Drawing his bow again, he let loose another set of arrows.

Meanwhile, the second one, a blue haired girl with fist wrapped in bandage down to her elbows, swung her fist down, matching the wild attacks of the monsters.

As soon as her fist collided with a monster body, cracking sounds would ring out with the monster getting violently thrown back, never rising again.

The third, a bald headed man holding a greatsword, swung down at the beasts without mercy. His blade easily sliced through multiple beasts at once.

They fought with eerie calmness as more creatures poured from the streets and broken houses.

If any of the villagers were conscious enough to watch the fight. They would have exclaimed in awe.

The hideous creatures that had caused devastation to their settlement were being wiped out by a group of three humans.

The fourth human–the silver–haired man was a devastating force on his own. It appeared the beasts were utterly avoiding him while the few ones foolish enough to charge at him were reduced to pieces of flesh without evening coming near him.

His eyes scanned the wreckage, not the least bothered about the creatures.

He soon spotted a figure covered in broken furniture and stones. Walking forward, the debris lifted off the body as if being controlled by a strange force.

The body was also pulled by the force revealing strands of messy red hair, which was covered in dried blood.

"At least he's alive." He thought, shaking his head before letting out a sigh. His search appeared to be futile since the bodies he discovered were either half eaten or crushed by debris.

Yet the first survivor he had found appeared to be a bit strange. There was no injury on his body save for the dried up blood in his hair and clothes.

"Hmmm. Strange." With the body floating beside him, he continued his search, hoping to at least find another survivor.

"If only that damn bastard allowed us to leave early." A flicker of emotion appeared on his face for the first time.

With how the world was and how humans were trying to survive against the relentless rifts that appeared all over their world. This was quite a waste.

Shaking his head once more, he continued his search.

The battle between the three humans and the creatures were finally over. The ground was littered with bodies of fallen monsters either pierced by an unseen arrow, brutally punched to death or sliced apart by an extremely sharp blade.

They too spread out in search of survivors.
