Chapter 25 - Mentality

[Ding! Host has been given a mission]

[Mission: You have been given a chance to break into the starting lineup by your coach. Perform well in the training and make the coach consider including you to the matchday squad]

[Reward: +10 stat point, <50/50> new skill acquisition]

[Time limit: 30 days]

While Tyler was reading the missions and the rewards, he got very excited when he saw the skill as a reward if it wasn't guaranteed. Ever since he got the system, he hadn't seen any changes to his skills. He had tried practicing new skills, but the system didn't list it as part of his skills, it just allowed him to develop his existing one.

Now, he had the chance to acquire a new skill.

Just as he was about to turn his attention back to the coach, he saw another notification.

[Side quest: Make your debut before the 2024/2025 season ends]

[Reward: +50 stat points, +5 potential rating]

Tyler's eyes almost popped out of its socket when he saw the reward for completing the side quest. It was literally called a side quest, he didn't know why the reward was so much.

One thing was clear to him when he saw the missions that the system posted, he had to impress his coach very quickly. He didn't have much time on his hands. Adi Hutter already seemed fixated on the fact that Tyler was to play with the under eighteens, and Tyler knew that it would take a lot to change his mind.

After Adi Hutter finished his announcement, he announced the starting eleven for both sides. Tyler listened eagerly, waiting for his name to be called but he didn't even make it into the reserve eleven. Adi placed him, and some other youth players called to train with the first team aside. If he wanted to remove someone then he would call them in.

'Great'. Tyler thought as he went with the other players that didn't make it to either eleven. 'How the fuck am I supposed to get into the matchday squad when I'm not even considered a reserve player?!'

Tyler stole a glance at George, who was forced to play out of position as a left winger and felt all the more angry. He was a natural left winger. Why did the coach have to force George to play there when he was available. Did Adi not believe that he was good enough?

Tyler's fists clenched unconsciously as he had these thoughts. If Adi didn't believe in his abilities then he would just have to show him what he could do, assuming he came on that is.

"Why'd you play George as a left winger? That kid is right there and it's his natural position as well" While Tyler was having his thoughts, one of Adi's assistants asked him the question that was bugging him.

Adi briefly glanced at Tyler. "He's been here for one day, I don't think he's ready to start with the team here. I'll give him some time to show me what he can do, but I think he needs to build some chemistry and adapt before I throw him to the wolves... completely".

"Alright then. I think you should explain it to him though. It's very easy for these young players to misunderstand little things like this". The assistant said.

Adi shook his head. "I'm the manager, I can do whatever the fuck I want. I don't need to explain myself to anybody. Especially not some kid".

"If you don't tell him why you have an eighteen year old, six foot striker starting ahead of him, he might start getting angry and dissatisfied"

"Let him. That was my intention". Adi Hutter glanced at Tyler. "Looking at him now, he's probably already pissed. I want that, he needs that. His reaction to his anger is what will determine whether he's going to keep training with us or I'll have to send him to the under eighteens for his development".

"How so?" The assistant asked.

"It's all about his mentality. If he's angry and plays bad, then he need some time to develop and discover himself. If he's mentality is where I want it to be right now, then he's going to get angry and want to prove me wrong so whatever little chance I give him today will be a lifeline for him, and he's going to want to use it well. Do you understand?"

The assistant nodded slightly.

"That's why I'm the coach and you're the assistant, Julian. I do everything with purpose". Adi Hutter said while wrapping his arms around Julian's neck.

Julia nodded slightly and turned his attention to the players on the pitch. The two sides had already arranged themselves according to the lineups and the ball was in the center circle.

Tyler stared at the match with keen interest. Even though he was angry about missing out on the training game, it was still a chance to watch professionals play up close and personal. He wasn't going to waste it.

A few seconds later, one of the assistant coaches blew his whistle and just like that, the training match started.
