Chapter 192 - Urban Pokémon [192]

After Beedrill underwent Mega Evolution, its entire presence changed.

The three body segments that had once connected directly were now joined by black, node-like links.

Its head antennae shortened, but swept far back along its skull. Its mouthparts grew sharper—longer, deadlier—and there was a cold, venomous edge to its gaze.

Its abdomen tapered into a cone. Two oval grooves near the front angled forward, and the stinger at the tip lengthened even further.

The poison lances in its hands developed guard-like ridges—like the handguards of a knight's spear. Now Beedrill truly fought with twin spears.

Even its feet became needle-like, striped black and yellow.

And its wings—thin as cicada wings—shifted too: longer, sleeker, almost technological.

From a distance, they looked like two pairs of mechanized charging wings.

Even with that transformation, though, it still carried every hallmark of Beedrill.

This was the world's first witness to Mega Evolution—

And the masterpiece that had just crushed Lie Ke's Pokémon…had been Mega Beedrill.

"BZZZ!"

Mega Beedrill raised its long lances, pointing straight at Thundurus. Its gaze was razor-sharp—so intense you couldn't meet it head-on.

At that moment…

Lie Ke's eyes went blank.

What had he just seen?

A new evolution?

Had he fallen into some kind of illusion?

For a second, his mind filled with nothing but question marks.

After all, Beedrill was the final evolution of the Weedle line.

That was a conclusion the Pokémon League had recognized for over a century—solid, established research.

Yet right now, right in front of him, a twenty-something kid had overturned it with his own hands.

It was like telling an ancient man that one day, humans would fly freely through the sky—he'd only think you were insane.

Having common sense shattered like that hit the soul like a hammer.

In truth, it wasn't just Lie Ke who was stunned.

Even Beedrill—now in Mega form—felt its heart jolt.

It hadn't expected such a drastic change the moment it accepted that power.

All it felt now was this—it could beat its old self senseless.

Thankfully, Beedrill wasn't new to upheaval.

The explosive leap in strength after Template Binding, the constant flood of battle techniques in its mind, even the sudden eruption of terrifying power from Z-Moves…

To Mega Beedrill, after serving under Guo Yi, even becoming a Legendary Pokémon someday wouldn't feel surprising.

But while their inner worlds churned, Guo Yi was focused on something else—feeling the strain Mega Evolution placed on him.

As I thought.

Mega Evolution is like Z-Moves—you can't just use it whenever you feel like it.

From the moment Beedrill began to Mega Evolve, Guo Yi could clearly feel his stamina draining faster than usual.

Once a Trainer's stamina ran out, even if the Pokémon still had fight left, it would likely drop out of Mega form.

Because in a sense, Mega Evolution was born from Trainer and Pokémon pushing power out together.

If either side couldn't keep up, it wouldn't hold.

That said—with Guo Yi's current physical conditioning, this level of stamina consumption was nothing.

With a "Super Pallet Physique," Aura, and the Power of Viridian, even if Guo Yi never trained, his body was still in no way inferior to martial artists who honed themselves daily.

Of course.

Having the physique was one thing. In a real fight, actual hand-to-hand skill mattered too.

And in that regard, Guo Yi was still lacking.

But with the Pokémon he commanded now, if things ever reached the point where he personally had to jump in and brawl—then unless he had the power to fight a Legendary Pokémon—everything else would be pointless.

"Beedrill—make them pay for underestimating you!"

Guo Yi stared up at Thundurus, confidence surging through his blood.

Let this Thundurus become the first sacrifice to Beedrill's Mega Evolution.

And for being knocked back earlier, Beedrill was holding a grudge of its own.

Now—it was time to take the stage back.

Its wings snapped once. Only an afterimage remained as it launched at Thundurus.

Before Mega Evolution, Beedrill's base stats were unremarkable across the board.

A total of 395 didn't stand out among Pokémon at all.

But its distribution was fairly sensible, and Weedle-line Pokémon grew quickly, reaching combat readiness fast.

So it remained a widely accepted choice among ordinary Trainers.

Once Mega Evolution happened, though, Mega Beedrill's base stat total jumped to 495—an increase of a full 100 points.

And part of that rebalance fixed the one truly awkward stat in Beedrill's spread: Special Attack.

Beedrill originally had 45 base Special Attack.

But the Weedle line excelled at physical offense.

Its main attacking moves—X-Scissor, Fell Stinger, Drill Run, and so on—were all physical.

Special moves it could learn were practically nonexistent—and there was no reason to learn them anyway.

So in most people's eyes, Beedrill's role was simple: a physical assassin.

Which made that 45 Special Attack feel completely out of place.

After Mega Evolution, that problem vanished.

Mega Beedrill's Special Attack dropped from 45 to 15, and the freed 30 points—along with the 100 points granted by Mega Evolution—were poured straight into Attack and Speed.

For an assassin—Attack and Speed were everything.

And in those two areas, Beedrill received a truly terrifying boost.

Its Attack jumped from 90 to 150.

With Legendary Pokémon excluded—among ordinary Pokémon, Beedrill could easily rank in the top ten for physical offense.

And compared to Attack…

its Speed increase was even more monstrous.

From 75, it nearly doubled, rocketing to a horrifying 145.

That was top-five territory.

Because its stats were so cleanly and rationally arranged, even in another life, Beedrill still had plenty of devoted fans.

Other Pokémon aside—the Thundurus in front of them absolutely did not outscore Beedrill in those two categories.

And beyond stats, Beedrill's Ability could only be described as perfect.

No matter what Ability Beedrill had before Mega Evolution, once it Mega Evolved, it became Adaptability.

...

[Adaptability]: When using a move that shares the user's type, the move's power is increased.

...

So what awaited Thundurus next was a Mega Beedrill it would never forget.

"BZZZ!"

Mega Beedrill crossed its longer twin lances before its chest, and a blood-red X-Scissor slashed straight at Thundurus.

And it wasn't just Mega Evolution's power that had let it crush Lie Ke's six Pokémon earlier—it had done it with Fell Stinger.

Which meant Mega Beedrill's Attack was still sitting at an absurd level.

Absurd enough that—even using X-Scissor, a move with unfavorable typing, Thundurus still couldn't withstand the onslaught and was forced back again and again.

"ROAR!"

As it was driven back, the arrogance on Thundurus's face finally vanished.

It understood perfectly—this brand-new Pokémon had the power to defeat it.

With no wasted motion.

Thundurus lifted its hand—several Thunders came crashing down from the sky, each one aimed directly at Mega Beedrill.

But—even if lightning was fast, Mega Beedrill didn't care.

Bzz—

Its wings trembled.

DOUBLE TEAM

The next second—the sky filled with Mega Beedrill's copies, so many even Naruto's Multi Shadow Clone Jutsu would've struggled to compete.

Thundurus's Thunders ripped through multiple images, but didn't touch the real one.

When its attack failed, Thundurus immediately began gathering electricity, preparing a wide-area strike.

But Mega Beedrill wasn't about to give it the chance.

The air swarmed with insect shadows—like a black tide rolling in as they surged toward Thundurus.

So dense, so countless, Thundurus couldn't tell real from fake.

Riiip—riiip!

Using Double Team's confusion, Mega Beedrill's long lances kept carving across Thundurus's body, leaving wound after wound.

For this kind of lightning-fast rushdown, Beedrill was beyond familiar.

So Mega Beedrill chained together relentless quick strikes, hammering Thundurus until it could barely respond.

Only then did Lie Ke finally snap out of it.

"Thundurus, break out!"

"Use [FLY]!"

To be honest—even though Thundurus was a Flying type, the Flying-type moves it could use were painfully few.

And Fly was the one it was best at.

Back when it battled Tornadus, it often needed that move just to keep up with Tornadus's pace.

"ROAR!"

With a furious bellow, Thundurus's Flying-type power surged out.

In an instant—a raging airflow whirled around its body.

Wind blades forced Mega Beedrill back for the moment.

Taking that opening, Thundurus shot upward and plunged into the roiling thunderclouds.

And the moment it vanished into them—the dark clouds overhead erupted, thunder cracking as lightning serpents writhed across the sky.

Terrifying currents condensed, thicker and thicker.

"Beedrill, watch out! It's going all-out."

Guo Yi's expression tightened as he warned the Beedrill hovering in front of him.

The Thundurus before them wasn't something Zapdos could be compared to.

It was a being that possessed divine authority.

"BZZZ!"

Mega Beedrill dipped its head slightly in acknowledgement.

Okay, real talk: I am extremely hungry for money, so I'm raising membership prices soon.

BUT.

If you're already subscribed before the change, your current price stays the same as long as you remain subscribed.

So for example:

Person A is already subscribed at $7/month

Price later goes up to $14/month

Person A still pays $7/month if they stay subscribed

Meanwhile:

Person B was not subscribed before the change

After the price becomes $14/month

Person B has to pay $14/month

So yes, prices are going up, but existing members get to keep their current rate if they stay in.

Which means:

If you want the cheaper price, join before the change. Otherwise, if you subscribe later, you'll be paying the new higher amount.

Price changes happen on Monday 16th, North America time.
