Chapter 21 - Chapter 21: The Desire For Revenge

Emmy Hunters walked down the cracked cobblestone street, her pink hair shimmering like the dawn's first light. The bustling streets of New York felt like a distant memory to her now—one she'd never get back. The towering buildings loomed on either side of her, their shadows long as the sun began its descent. But the noise of the city, the chatter of its many inhabitants, only seemed to fade in her mind. All that was left was the hollow, persistent ache of loss.

Her boots tapped lightly against the pavement as she moved forward, her heart in a vice of sorrow. A little over a week ago, her grandmother—her beloved Grandma Mia—had been killed by the Minotaur. That infernal creature, a mini-boss of unknown origins, had ravaged the north side of the city. It had destroyed everything in its path, from humble homes to military barricades. And worse, it had killed her grandmother.

Emmy had been there when it happened. She had arrived too late to stop it. She still remembered the thick, oppressive smoke from the debris, the cries of helpless people, and the sight of the monstrous Minotaur standing amidst the ruin. She had barely been able to escape its crushing blow when it attacked the small apartment building where Mia had lived. Despite her best efforts to conjure a barrier of fire and wind, the Minotaur had been far too powerful. Far too relentless.

And now, here she was—on the cusp of facing that very monster. Alone.

Emmy knew that many heroes would be too afraid to face it. It wasn't a threat any seasoned fighter would take lightly. The Minotaur's power was unpredictable, its horned form massive and imposing. There had been rumors that it was the first of its kind, a being that had been born from dark magic—something even veteran heroes feared. The government had sent their forces to try and contain it, but no one had succeeded.

And no one cared.

They said the reward was too little for a monster of this caliber. It wasn't worth the risk to heroes who were looking for high-paying contracts and opportunities with agencies. What good was a measly payout when the Minotaur could tear apart a team of seasoned heroes in minutes?

But for Emmy, it was never about the money.

She had spent nights pacing her cramped room in the high-rise apartment, searching for any solution, any team that would take up the fight with her. But every hero she approached simply turned her away. Some laughed in her face. Some didn't even bother to respond. The words they spoke stung, though they were always the same: It's too dangerous. It's not worth it. You're not strong enough.

Each rejection tore her apart a little more. They didn't know her, didn't understand the burning desire in her chest. They couldn't see the fire in her heart, the need for justice and revenge that outweighed everything else.

Her grandmother had been everything to her. Mia had raised her after her parents' death, teaching her how to be strong, how to control her magical powers, how to survive in a world that often didn't care. But the Minotaur had taken that all away, and now Emmy was left with nothing. Nothing but this burning need to avenge her grandmother.

Emmy sighed deeply, watching the faint trail of her breath escape in the cool evening air. The chill of the world seemed to mirror the cold knot in her stomach. She had no backup. No one was coming to help her. The heroes had all turned their backs, and the city officials were more concerned with public order than the bloodlust of a monster roaming their streets.

She could feel the faint tug of exhaustion pulling at her bones, but she ignored it. She wasn't tired. She had enough strength to make this right. She had to.

A few steps further, and Emmy was standing before the clearing near the outskirts of the city—where the Minotaur had been last seen. The forest around her had been scorched and burned in places by the monster's rampage. Trees had been uprooted, debris scattered about like forgotten toys. A trail of blood—more like a smear of crimson—led deep into the woods. It was the only trace left of the monster, and it would be her guide.

Emmy drew in a breath, feeling her heart thundering in her chest. Her hand trembled as she reached for the pouch at her side. Inside were vials of magic—elements she could control. Fire, wind, water, and earth—all at her fingertips. Each vial was carefully prepared with her magic infused into them, and she had to choose wisely. Too much use of any one element would drain her energy too quickly.

Her mind was a whirl of emotions. She had the power, she knew she did. She was a mage, after all. But it wasn't just about casting spells. It was about surviving the onslaught that was sure to come once the Minotaur found her.

I can do this. I will avenge Grandma Mia. I won't fail her.

Her feet carried her deeper into the forest, each step weighed down with the memory of the loss she'd suffered. A part of her wanted to break down, to cry, to let go of the burden that had built up over the last few days. But she couldn't. She wouldn't.

She knew there was no going back now.

A rustling from ahead broke her thoughts, and Emmy's eyes darted to the shadows. She could feel the presence of the beast before she saw it. The air shifted, heavy with an unseen pressure. Her breath caught in her throat.

The Minotaur stepped into view—a hulking, monstrous figure with massive horns and glowing red eyes. Its body was covered in tough, scaled hide, and its hands were like slabs of stone, each one the size of a small boulder. Its breath steamed in the cold night air, and it let out a low, rumbling growl.

Emmy's hands clenched at her sides, her magic crackling to life. She could already feel the heat of the fire spell building inside her, but she had to wait. She couldn't strike too early.

It didn't matter if she was afraid. It didn't matter that she was alone.

She had to do this.

The Minotaur's roar shattered the silence, and it charged toward her, its massive feet crushing the earth beneath it. Emmy's pulse raced, her heart pounding in her ears.

This was it.
