Well, let's speak of plutonium. Very few real uranium weapons were ever built, as plutonium is about 5 times more weight-efficient.
First of all, there are fissile elements and there are fissionable elements. Fissiles can sustain internal chain reactions, supplying their own neutrons for the continuation of the "burn". U-235 and Pu-239 (and U-233) are all fissiles. U-238 is fissionable; it can be made to fission, but will not chain react and supply its own neutrons; they have to come from elsewhere. U-238 is a fissionable in a nuclear device.
The core of a fission weapon (stand-alone or primary in a thermonuke) contains about 10 kg (22 pounds) of plutonium/gallium alloy (the gallium is added to stabilize the plutonium's squirrely metallurgical states). In addition, just about every weapon built (neutron bombs are an exception) from the first had/has a tamper added, manufactured from depleted uranium-238. There are three advantages to this: inertial containment gets a couple more vital generations of fission chain reaction; neutron reflection makes less required plutonium in the core for a critical mass; and the uranium-238 can be made to fission with the high-energy neutrons created in the core as mentioned above, up to doubling the effective energy release of the bomb.
That tamper adds about 50 kilograms (110 pounds) of weight to the device So you have an effective 60 kg of fissionables onboard, 10 kg of which is fissile.
In a thermonuke, the same principles hold for the primary, and the secondary is even better at providing higher (about 14 times more) energy neutrons, so both probably have tampers in use. There is also a "sparkplug" in the center of the secondary of a fissile element. A thermonuke may have 400–500 pounds of fissionables altogether, with the same 30–50 kg of fissiles.
Neutron bombs are an exception. They are invariably thermonukes, containing a secondary stage for the mass creation of high-energy neutrons. These bombs intentionally do not use fissionable tampers (at least in the secondary) so that the neutrons can be used to kill personnel on the ground; they were originated to kill tank crews (otherwise somewhat protected on the nuclear battlefield) and to mess with other nukes that may be nearby by pre-detonating them. They intentionally throw out the increased yield for the radiation effects.
