Dalton Knecht arrived at camp with a chip on his shoulder. He'd averaged 21 points in college, and he made sure everyone knew it—brushing off Lin Mo's advice, jacking up threes when the play called for a pass.
"Rookies gotta earn shots," Lin Mo said after practice, when Dalton missed a wide-open teammate.
Dalton smirked. "LeBron let rookies shoot. You scared I'll outshine you?"
Lin Mo didn't rise. "LeBron let rookies shoot when they moved the ball first. You think he got here by hogging it?"
That night, Lin Mo texted Ray: "How do you teach a kid to pass when he thinks he's the star?"
Ray's reply: "Make him want to. Find his favorite spot, then get him the ball there. Ego's just a hungry dog—feed it teamwork."
