Chapter 5 - Chapter 5: The First Step

"There's almost no difference."

A palace-like building stood before me—four stories tall, with a crest engraved at its peak, symbolizing the Goddess of Creation. This was the Adventurers' Department, where anyone possessing a class or potential could register as an adventurer. Compared to the income of ordinary laborers, adventurers earned significantly more—though they constantly risked their lives.

On the way here, I passed several adventurers, all appearing to be on their own quests issued by this very department.

As I entered the building, I was greeted by a familiar sound I only used to hear in the game:

> "You entered the Adventurers' Dept."

"Gram Village Map Unlocked."

Every time you entered a branch of the Adventurers' Department, the map of its corresponding area would be automatically registered.

"Well, that's helpful."

The system menu allows you to access both your status window and the map of this world. I walked up to the front counter to register as an adventurer. I was greeted with a warm smile from a woman, possibly in her late 30s or early 40s, judging by the soft lines on her face.

"Good day, noble sir. How may I help you?"

"Good day. I'd like to register as an adventurer."

"My name is Ms. Nora. First, we need to check your class."

She pulled out a small crystal—similar to the one Sir Greg used earlier—but before I could ask for a dagger, she smiled knowingly.

"There's no need for a blood sample, dear. This version only requires you to place your palm on the crystal."

Right… why did Greg use the outdated one on me?

I pressed my palm against the crystal while thinking of Greg's serious face, mildly irritated.

The crystal glowed, and a status window made of light appeared before us. Ms. Nora studied it carefully. She then pulled out a blank, rectangular card and held it up to the light. The information was absorbed into the paper before she handed it to me.

"Mr. Leben, this is your Adventurer's Card. This will serve as proof of your registration."

"Thank you, Ms. Nora."

"Here's also a rulebook and a guide to the Adventurer's Department and the ranking system. It also includes locations and instructions on how to train and acquire your class."

Even if a class isn't listed on your status, you're still qualified to be an adventurer as long as you have a status window and can raise your stats. Based on my instincts, it seems the system of this world has changed. People who obtained a class during their childhood aptitude tests are considered "Gifted" or "Talented." That means they're already capable of taking down low-ranking bosses at a young age—bosses that were once just game mechanics are now a deadly reality.

Still, the advantage of being "Classless" is flexibility: you can choose your own path.

"Thank you again, Ms. Nora."

"My pleasure, Mr. Leben. If you have any questions or requests, you may visit any nearby Adventurers' Department branch. We'll be happy to assist you."

I nodded and stepped away from the counter. I looked down at my card.

"I'm not sure if this is even useful… I already have a system menu anyway."

"Rank White, huh…"

My stats were awful—worse than the default settings when creating a new character. Was I really summoned into this world just to suffer and die?

In Alfiria Saga, the ranking system started at White, the lowest. It then progressed as follows:

White - E-Rank

Green - D-Rank

Blue - C-Rank

Purple - B-Rank

Orange - A-Rank

Red - S-Rank

Gold - SS-Rank (Legendary)

"Alright. First goal: achieved. Next step—obtain one of the Seven Sacred Treasures."

To do that, I needed to grow stronger. With these stats, I couldn't even take down a slime. But there's always one way to grow when your stats are this bad.

I made my way to the left wing of the Adventurers' Department toward the Training Field, and there I found something very familiar—something all noobs used to grind their stats in the early game:

> The Training Dummy.
