The cold night breeze blew across the damp cobblestones of Paris, carrying with it a strange, heavy fog that clung tightly to the streetlights.
Walking with silent footsteps through the narrow streets of the French capital, Nicolas and Perenelle Flamel moved side by side, shoulder to shoulder. Despite their frail and elderly appearance in the eyes of Muggles, the creators of the Philosopher's Stone moved with great agility and a subtle aura that betrayed their power. Their eyes scanned every alley, every shadow, and every rooftop, remaining on high alert for any unusual movement that might be brewing at that very moment.
Over the past few days, a disturbance had begun to taint the city's vibrant magic, staining it a deep black. Both had begun to sense certain… somewhat unpleasant, unnatural presences that gave off a nauseating stench and, curiously, seemed to focus solely and exclusively on attacking the city's local Muggles.
The French Muggle authorities were on high alert, reporting on the news and in the press about a wave of mass disappearances with no logical explanation or leads to track down the culprit.
At first, Nicolas and his wife decided to ignore it. Having lived for more than six centuries, they had seen humanity repeat its own horrors cyclically, and they thought it was simply some Muggle serial killer who appeared every so often to shake up society. However, with every new account that filtered through their contacts at the French Ministry of Magic and at Muggle police stations, they came to realize an undeniable reality: it was something of a magical nature—a very ancient and twisted magic—that was directly involved.
The few people who managed to escape those nocturnal encounters alive ended up in psychiatric wards. The survivors, trembling and weeping inconsolably, spoke of silhouettes that seemed impossible, of "lanky shadows" that glided along the walls. They described feeling a paralyzing fear, a terror that froze their blood, as well as a chill so intense that it made their skin crawl and took their breath away, leaving them with the feeling that they would never be happy again.
Of course, Muggle police officers and psychologists claimed that all of this was simply post-traumatic hallucinations; they argued that the fragile human mind created these "supernatural monsters" as a defense mechanism to process the shock and incomprehensible fear of being murdered by someone in the dark.
But Nicolas and Perenelle knew the truth. The descriptions matched a Dementor's profile in a terrifying way, but there were details in the accounts that simply didn't fit with the guards of Azkaban.
That day, after tracking the faint echoes of magic they could detect, they walked through one of the industrial districts on the outskirts of Paris—the exact area where the most disappearances were reported and where the Flamels firmly believed the epicenter and origin of those beings' activity lay.
The residual magic in the air was thick, leaving a metallic taste in their mouths. Following that invisible thread of energy, the couple finally arrived at the entrance to a massive, dilapidated, abandoned warehouse. The windows were broken, and the rusted metal structure creaked in the night wind.
Nicolas raised a hand, signaling Perenelle to stop. With a subtle movement of their wands, they both wove a powerful, impenetrable concealment charm around themselves that completely erased their magical signature, their scent, their body heat, and the sound of their breathing. They were, for all practical purposes, nonexistent.
They slowly approached one of the warehouse's half-open doors and peered into the dimly lit interior.
That was when they saw it.
Sliding across the concrete floor in a way that defied all logic was a terrifying creature. It was a lanky, towering being, easily exceeding three meters in height. Its body seemed to be made entirely of thick shadows, as if darkness were twisting in on itself, with no bones or defined shape beyond a pair of disproportionately long arms. But the most unsettling thing was not its strange anatomy or the darkness it emanated; it was its empty face, adorned only by two spheres of pale light glowing where its eyes should have been.
As if it had sensed a disturbance in the air, the creature came to an abrupt halt. It turned its hideous, featureless face of shadows directly toward the Flamels' position, fixing those two spheres of spectral light on the door.
Nicolas held his breath, gripping his wife's hand tightly.
For a few long, agonizing seconds, the creature seemed to scrutinize the entrance from head to toe. However, the alchemists' powerful shields held firm. Noticing nothing, the creature looked away and walked past, disappearing into the depths of the warehouse almost silently.
Perenelle exhaled slowly. She leaned close to her husband's ear and whispered to him in a tone of voice she rarely used.
"Nicolas… in all our centuries of life, I swear I've never seen anything like those things. Not even in the descriptions of the oldest grimoires… those things are unnatural," she finished, her voice a mixture of bewilderment and deep unease.
Nicolas nodded silently, his face set as he stared intently at the spot where the creature had vanished. If something new and so dangerous was roaming the streets of their city, devouring Muggles under the orders of who knows what wizard, he couldn't just stand by and do nothing.
"I know, my love," Nicolas murmured, gripping his wand. "And that's exactly why we have to get to the bottom of this. Today."
Nicolas and Perenelle cautiously made their way into the depths of the immense industrial complex. The air inside was thick, permeated by a musty smell of rust, dried oil, and something… putrid. From what they could make out as they surveyed the enormous soot-covered machinery and rusted assembly lines, the place was a former factory where, decades ago, cars had been manufactured.
Halfway down the main corridor, Perenelle stopped dead in her tracks and covered her mouth with both hands, stifling a scream of horror as she looked up.
High above, hanging directly from the metal beams of the ceiling as if they were cows in a slaughterhouse, were several lifeless bodies of Muggle men and women. Fresh blood dripped lazily from their limbs, splattering the concrete floor in a slow and macabre manner. As they stared at the bodies, the Flamels realized with a shudder that the corpses' faces were disfigured; their heads no longer had eyes, and some were missing ears as well, leaving only empty, bloodied eye sockets.
Nicolas, his face set in deep indignation, wrapped his arms around his wife's shoulders, pulling her close to his side to give her strength. Sharing a look of revulsion, they both nodded silently and continued on their way with steady steps toward the back of the factory, where the concentration of dark magic was almost suffocating.
Upon reaching the end of the corridor, they peered out from a metal platform at the top of the structure. As they looked down into the central pit, in the lowest part of the factory, the scene they witnessed made their blood run cold.
Down there, a group of surviving Muggles was cornered. People were screaming wildly, begging on their knees, and sobbing in despair, pleading for mercy that would never come. Three enormous creatures of the shadows stood among them, paying not the slightest attention to their cries; they moved with utter indifference, treating them as if they were mere plastic toys. With brutal force, they crushed their chests, snapped their necks, arms, and legs, leaving only the sound of their bodies crunching to echo off the walls, before tossing them dismissively onto a massive pile of corpses growing to one side.
Nicolas and Perenelle were utterly horrified by such a display of senseless carnage and sadism.
A second later, the echo of footsteps caught the shadows' attention. A woman with an extremely pale complexion, sharp features, and striking reddish hair emerged from the darkness of a side office. She walked calmly through the pools of blood and, stopping in front of the monsters, began to give orders to the creatures in a low voice that the Flamels could not hear clearly from their elevated position.
Nicolas quickly assessed the situation with a cool head. There were only three of those aberrations and the woman. There were no more reinforcements in sight. He looked at Perenelle, whose eyes burned with a fury identical to his own. No matter what they had to face, they had to stop that madwoman immediately.
Acting in perfect unison, the Flamels raised their wands toward the sky. Channeling centuries of knowledge and power into a single point, they unleashed a devastating combined attack directly at the woman and the creatures' position. A whirlwind of white fire and pure energy cut through the gloom, striking the center of the factory with a thunderous explosion that shook the very foundations of the building.
A thick cloud of smoke and debris blanketed the lower area. As the smoke began to clear, the three shadow creatures staggered, having been abruptly separated from the woman they had protected by throwing themselves on top of her.
In the center of the crater, the redhead brushed the dust off her dark robe. She looked around in all directions with bloodshot eyes, her face contorted by a grimace of fury and uncontrolled rage.
"Show yourselves!" the woman shouted, her voice resonating with a hysterical echo. "Show yourselves right now so I can tear you apart with my own hands!"
Nicolas and Perenelle dispelled their concealment charm. With dignity and an imposing presence that betrayed their status as living legends, they walked to the edge of the platform and slowly descended the metal stairs toward her.
Upon seeing them appear, the woman clenched her teeth for a moment before changing her expression and smiling with twisted malice, raising her wand.
"Well, well… look what the wind has blown in. You'll bitterly regret interrupting my precious work," she remarked in a low, smug voice.
Nicolas looked at her coldly, his eyes piercing the witch's with severity.
"We won't regret anything that happens," Nicolas declared, his voice resonating with authority. "But you… you'll pay with your life for every single atrocity you've committed here today."
