Mylara unrolled a blood-marked scroll: intercepted communications between the remaining Black Scale cells.
"They're rebuilding in the Stepstones. Mercenaries. Slave legions. And Rhogar. He calls himself the Flameborn King."
Druvos growled. "He tried to kill you in Volnyr Hold. Let's burn the bastard."
Vaeron remained calm, gazing at Ashryn coiled outside, her obsidian wings casting jagged shadows.
"No. Not yet," he said. "We need legitimacy before vengeance. A throne is only a pyre without vassals."
Old Menarion cleared his throat, gesturing to a separate scroll.
"There is a way. An ancient rite. The Rite of the Tri-Fire Crown. If you claim it before the Free Cities or the Stepstone lords, the ancient magic of the Old Tongue will bind rebels to your name."
Mylara's eyes sharpened. "But to do that, we need three things: a true dragonflight, a sovereign banner recognized by magic, and a seat of rule sanctified by Valyrian blood."
Vaeron rose from the table. "Then we build our kingdom. From shadow, smoke, and steel."
II. Foundations of Flame

The Isle of Vhass, once a broken pirate refuge, now echoed with the sounds of hammer, forge, and dragon's cry.
Kaelor coordinated the building of Flamehold, a fortress with obsidian walls, a dragon rookery carved into the cliffs, and a hidden vault for relics and dragon eggs.
Ships arrived with mercenaries swearing oaths for coin and honor. Slaves seeking freedom became paid builders. Priests of long-forgotten Valyrian gods returned to bless the altar of fire.

Yet all was not peaceful.
A raid came from the sea. The pirate-lord Varric the Bleeder sent two ships under cover of night, seeking to kill Vaeron and steal Ashryn's eggs.
But Vaeron was ready.
Atop Flamehold's tower, he ignited a beacon—enchanted with Valyrian glyphs—and called Ashryn.

But before all, there was Rhogar.
"He's moving north," Mylara reported. "Gathering Stepstone pirates and Free Cities outlaws."
Vaeron looked at the war map. "Then we move faster."
He forged alliances with:
The Broken Helm Company, mercenaries from Tyrosh
The Whispering Flame Cult, fanatics of the old fire temples
And Iskandor, a former Black Scale prince, turned exile
Iskandor offered a grim proposal. "Give me a chance to prove my loyalty. Let me infiltrate Rhogar's camp. I'll bring you his battle plans… or die trying."
Vaeron agreed, reluctantly.
IV. The Dragon Hunt Begins
The two eggs they had brought from Valyria began to pulse with heat.

A spy had infiltrated their ranks. They found hidden glyphs carved behind walls, a planned explosion near the dragon rookery, and three corrupted soldiers.
Vaeron ordered a brutal purge.
"Let them burn," he said. "We are not the ashes of the old empire. We are its flame reborn."
VI. The March to War
Rhogar moved to claim Blackspine Isle, an obsidian-rich island northeast of the Stepstones.
If he succeeded, he would gain wealth, dragons, and legitimacy.
Vaeron gathered his forces: two dragons, 300 trained soldiers, and his elite Flameborn Guard. The sea armada, now ten ships strong, sailed with crimson sails.
