Chapter 169: Uchiha Revolt
Team 7, led by Hatake Kakashi, took only three days to arrive in the Land of Waves. However, the Konoha Hundred took an entire week to return to Konoha Village.
This was despite only a small number of refugees from the Land of Rivers being resettled there; otherwise, the process would have been much slower. Many of these refugees included the elderly, the weak, women, and children. Even with the purchase of numerous ox carts for transport, the large size of the group, especially considering the logistical challenges, meant that without the expense, it would have taken twice as long to return.
Initially, Konoha's leaders and ninja clans had dismissed the return of the Konoha Hundred as a routine return of ninjas from the front. However, upon learning of the presence of a Daimyo from the Land of Rivers and thousands of refugees, Konoha's leaders abandoned their previous superficial approach and instead dedicated themselves to a grand ceremony. Under the wise leadership of the higher-ups, the return of the Konoha Hundred was presented as the victorious return of a vast ninja army. Even the Third Hokage, Sarutobi Hiruzen, personally waited for their triumphant return at the village gates. Without the support of the Daimyo of the Land of Rivers, they would never have received such treatment. Perhaps the thousands of rescued refugees were intercepted and divided along the way, which now became a political achievement for Konoha's higher-ups.
"Are these the Konoha Hundred of our village? I've heard they killed almost a thousand enemy ninjas."
"It's true. My son is a chunin, and I have reliable information. They annihilated over six hundred Sand ninjas, and even an entire army corps from the Mist."
Konoha's villagers were brimming with pride. Killing almost a thousand enemies was a truly remarkable achievement. No wonder even the Third Hokage and Danzo were present.
The presentation ceremony of the captives was a resounding success, and Konoha's villagers were extremely enthusiastic. But just as everything was going perfectly, the Uchiha clan launched a sudden attack.
"Umino Sasuke, what is your crime for imprisoning Konoha ninjas?" shouted Uchiha Hikari, accompanied by the Konoha Military Police Force.
The Konoha Hundred, already united, confronted them, not with violence, but with words, verbally attacking the Uchiha.
"The Uchiha clan is very powerful, but they ran away in the middle of a battle!"
"They tried to take credit and were defeated in a duel! How humiliating!"
Upon learning of the situation, Konoha's villagers launched a wave of criticism against the Uchiha clan, while Konoha's high officials watched in silence.
"Chief Hikari," Sasuke said, "here are the crimes of the Mitokado clan ninjas. As for these Konoha ninjas you claim I imprisoned, I'll leave them to you."
He released the four unconscious Uchiha and handed over the chained Mitokado clan members. Under the watchful eyes of the crowd, Hikari had no choice but to take them away. But he continued his attack, accusing Sasuke of teaching ninjutsu without authorization and of reselling war spoils.
"Unauthorized ninjutsu?" Sasuke retorted. "We stole that loot from the Sand ninjas. Besides, Elder Danzo already has a new policy that allows for loans for training. This was all the work of the wise and powerful Elder Danzo!"
Danzo, hearing this, nodded, showing his agreement.
"Then you can't dispute the reselling of military supplies!" Hikari insisted.
"Injustice! It was all for the resettlement of the refugees. I didn't take a single cent," Sasuke said, displaying the ledger that Shun had personally overseen.
The villagers, seeing the clarity of the account and the arrival of the thousands of refugees who corroborated the story, broke out in praise.
"Everyone, look! The Daimyo of the Land of Rivers and the refugees are here!"
