Chapter 73 - 73

Leaving Hiyori with a final, charming smile, Ren continued his patrol. The school festival hummed with life around him. Students laughed, visitors milled about, and the air was filled with the scents of food and the sounds of music. Yet, he moved through it all as if in a different world, a world where he was the puppet master and everyone else was a doll to be manipulated.

Meanwhile, back at the Service Club's booth, Yukino Yukinoshita stood in the organized chaos, her mind a whirlwind of conflicting thoughts. Ren had been a member of the club for a few days now, and she couldn't deny that his presence was a paradox. His efficiency was terrifying. He was a force of nature, able to solve problems with a terrifying speed and an almost casual detachment. Thanks to him, the festival had gone off without a hitch. The news about Sagami's suicide had been awful, but after the initial shock, the smooth transition of leadership to Yukino, guided by Ren's subtle but absolute influence, had ensured the festival's success. She was even starting to feel… positive. A dangerous and unfamiliar emotion.

And that was the problem. She was beginning to trust him.

But how could she? He was a living contradiction. His charming smile and polite demeanor were a mask, she was sure of it. He was too smooth, too perfect. He was a predator, a wolf in sheep's clothing, and she was the only one who seemed to see it. Yui, with her infectious optimism, was completely oblivious, charmed by his every word. Yukino felt a fierce, protective urge rise within her. She was the one who had to protect Yui from him. She couldn't let him get too close, couldn't let him poison Yui's innocent heart. She was a shield, and no matter how successful the festival was, no matter how much Ren helped the club, she would not let her guard down.

Not a few feet away, Hachiman Hikigaya leaned against a wall, his signature cynical expression firmly in place. He was doing his job, and nothing more. He hadn't asked to be here, hadn't asked to be involved in the social butterfly dance of the festival. Ren was a mystery to him, a walking anomaly. He was too popular, too perfect, and Hachiman's instincts, honed by years of social isolation, told him to stay as far away as possible.

Hachiman was a master of passive observation. He watched Ren from a distance, noting how he interacted with people, how effortlessly he seemed to get what he wanted. He saw the way Ren charmed the students, the way he handled the problems that came up. He didn't care about the festival's success; he just wanted to get through the day without any more trouble. He just did his job, keeping to himself, a silent, unseen observer in the midst of it all. He didn't think too deeply about Ren, or Yukino, or the sudden, strange success of the festival. Thinking was for suckers, and he was too cynical for that. He was just here, doing his time, waiting for the festival to end.
