Chapter 12 - Spurs vs Crystal Palace

July 3rd

As the day finally arrived, the fans of both Crystal Palace and Tottenham had made their way to Selhurst Park stadium, which was now buzzing with excitement. The stadium, with a capacity of 32,000, was 75% filled by Crystal Palace fans, who were eager to see their team in action.

The Tottenham fans, although fewer in number, were just as vocal and enthusiastic, cheering and waving their flags as they took their seats, happy that their team had finally made it back to the first division league. The atmosphere was electric, with both sets of fans ready to give their teams the support they needed to secure a win.

As the players of Tottenham Hotspur made their way to the locker room, the excitement and anticipation were palpable. Coach John was already there, going over the final team talk with his assistant coaches.

"Alright, guys, let's get focused," Coach John said, his voice calm and confident. "We've worked hard for this moment, and we're ready. Let's go out there and give it everything we've got."

The players nodded, their eyes fixed on their coach as they began to get ready for the match. Edwardo Guerrero, the team's defensive midfielder and Captain was stretching his legs, getting ready to anchor the midfield. Emily Patel, the creative attacking midfielder, was visualizing the game, thinking about the passes she would make and the opportunities she would create.

Meanwhile, Jordan smith, the goalkeeper, was checking his gloves, making sure he was ready to make the saves that would help his team secure a win. The defenders, Ryan Bennett, Michael Kim, Gavin Pierce, and Tyler Flynn, were all focused on their task, ready to keep the opposition at bay.

As the players finished getting ready, Coach John gave them one final message. "Let's go out there and make it happen, guys. Let's show them what we're made of. Let's go out there and win this game and bring back the glory of Tottenham!" The players erupted in a burst of energy, their voices echoing through the locker room as they chanted "Tottenham! Tottenham!" Coach John smiled, satisfied with the team's spirit. "Alright, let's get out there and do it!" he exclaimed, leading the team out of the locker room and onto the pitch.

As they emerged from the tunnel, the Tottenham players were greeted by a sea of Crystal Palace fans, who were cheering and waving their flags. The atmosphere was electric, with both sets of fans ready to give their teams the support they needed to secure a win. The Tottenham players took their positions on the pitch, their eyes fixed on the opposition as they waited for the game to kick off. Edwardo Guerrero, the team's captain, gave his teammates a nod of encouragement, his presence a calming influence on the team.

Commentary * (Moments before the players made their way out)

"Welcome to Selhurst Park, folks!" exclaimed commentator Jack Harris, his voice filled with enthusiasm. "It's great to see Tottenham Hotspur back in the English Premier League, even if this is just a friendly match. The energy in the stadium is electric, and I think this team is going to surprise a lot of people this season."

His co-commentator, Mark Davis, had a more measured tone. "I'm not sure it's all good vibes just yet, Jack," he said. "It's been years since Spurs last played in the Premier League, and the pressure is on these players to prove themselves. This isn't the second division anymore; this is where things start to get serious. The Premier League is a different beast altogether, and these players need to show that they belong at that level."

Jack Harris chuckled.

"Come on, Mark, it's just a friendly match. Let's enjoy the game and see what these players can do. Besides, it's always good to see a team get back to where they belong."

Mark Davis raised an eyebrow. "Friendly or not, Jack, the stakes are high. These players need to take this opportunity seriously and show the fans what they're capable of. The Premier League is a competitive league, and Spurs need to be ready to take on the best of the best." He continued with his voice taking on a more serious tone. "You know, Jack, I think Tottenham's biggest obstacle today is going to be Crystal Palace's striker, Lucas Fraser. He's been in great form lately, and he's not afraid of anyone on the pitch. Plus, their iron-tight midfield is going to make it tough for Spurs to gain any momentum."

Jack Harris nodded thoughtfully, considering Mark's words. "That's a good point, Mark. Crystal Palace has been known for their solid defense, and if they can get their striker going, it could be a long day for Tottenham."

Mark Davis's expression turned grave. "If Tottenham isn't careful, this friendly match could serve as a wake-up call. They need to be prepared for the Premier League's intensity, and if they can't even handle a friendly against Crystal Palace, it doesn't bode well for the rest of the season."

The present.

"And here are the starting 11 for Crystal Palace," Jack Harris announced, reading from the official team sheet. "In goal, we have veteran keeper, Nathan Baxter. The defense consists of left back, Liam Fraser; center backs, Jake Anderson and Alex Marshall; and right back, Ethan Thompson."

Mark Davis chimed in, "A solid defense, Jack. They've been known to shut down some of the top teams in the league."

Jack Harris continued, "In midfield, we have left central midfielder, Jamie Reed; defensive midfielder, Ben Saunders; right central midfielder, Kieran Lee; and attacking midfielder, Ross Dawson."

Mark Davis nodded, "A strong midfield unit, Jack. They're going to try to control the tempo of the game and create scoring opportunities."

Jack Harris finished the lineup, "And up front, we have strikers, Lucas Fraser and Tyler Hunt. Both players are known for their pace and finishing ability."

Mark Davis added, "A deadly duo, Jack. They're going to give Tottenham's defense a lot to think about."

"And here are the starting 11 for Tottenham Hotspur," Jack Harris announced. "In goal, we have Jordan Smith, a talented young keeper who's been working hard to improve his game."

Mark Davis nodded in agreement. "A good choice, Jack. Smith has shown a lot of promise and could be a key player for Spurs this season."

Jack Harris continued, "The defense consists of left back, Ryan Bennett; center backs, Michael Kim and Gavin Pierce; and right back, Tyler Flynn. A solid defense, but they'll need to be sharp to contain Crystal Palace's attack."

Mark Davis added, "That's right, Jack. Tottenham's defense will need to be organized and disciplined to deal with Crystal Palace's pacey strikers."

Jack Harris moved on to the midfield, "In midfield, we have defensive midfielder, Edwardo Guerrero, who's also the captain of the team. He's a seasoned pro and will anchor the midfield and provide defensive support."

Mark Davis praised Guerrero's experience, "Guerrero is a top player, Jack. He's got a great read on the game and will be crucial in breaking up Crystal Palace's attacks."

Jack Harris continued, "The attacking midfielders are Austin Reed on the left, Emily Patel in the center, and Ryder Bishop on the right. All three players are known for their creativity and pace, and they'll be looking to create scoring opportunities for the strikers."

Mark Davis noted, "A potent attacking trio, Jack. They'll need to work together seamlessly to create scoring opportunities."

Finally, Jack Harris introduced the strikers, "And up front, we have Dominic Watts and Ethan Hall. Both players are physical and clinical, and they'll be looking to capitalize on any chances that come their way."

Mark Davis concluded, "A strong starting 11 for Tottenham, Jack. They'll need to work together as a unit to get the win against Crystal Palace. The whistle's blown, and the game is underway. Let's see what these two teams have got!"

~~~~
The whistle blew, and the game was underway. Crystal Palace started strong, dominating the field with their possession and pressing high up the pitch. Tottenham struggled to gain any momentum, with Crystal Palace's midfielders controlling the tempo of the game. In the 5th minute, Crystal Palace's Ross Dawson had a shot on goal, but it sailed wide of the post. The Eagles continued to press, with their midfielders winning the ball back quickly after losing possession.
As the 10-minute mark approached, Crystal Palace's midfielders began to weave a intricate pattern, exchanging passes and moving into open spaces. Jamie Reed played a one-two with Kieran Lee, before finding Ben Saunders on the edge of the box. Saunders then played a perfectly weighted pass to Ross Dawson, who slipped a through ball to Lucas Fraser, the striker making a run behind the defense. Fraser received the pass and unleashed a powerful shot, which flew towards the goal post. Jordan Smith, the Tottenham goalkeeper, was caught off guard, and the ball crashed into the post with a loud thud.
The Crystal Palace players erupted in celebration, but the referee waved off the goal, indicating that Fraser was offside.
However, after a quick VAR check, the referee reversed his decision, and the goal was given. Lucas Fraser had timed his run perfectly, and the ball had come off his teammate's foot before he entered the box. The stadium erupted in cheers as Crystal Palace took the lead.
"1-0 Crystal Palace! What a beautifully worked goal!" Jack Harris exclaimed. "The midfielders did a fantastic job of creating space and finding their striker with a perfectly weighted pass."
Mark Davis nodded in agreement. "That's right, Jack. Crystal Palace's midfield has been dominant in the first 11 minutes. Tottenham needs to regroup and find a way to contain their opponents' creativity."
The game continued with Crystal Palace's momentum, but Tottenham started to gain some ground. In the 15th minute, Austin Reed had a shot on goal, but it was blocked by Crystal Palace's defense. As the 24th minute approached, Tottenham's Dominic Watts had a chance to equalize. He received a pass from Emily Patel and took a powerful shot on goal. However, Nathan Baxter, the Crystal Palace goalkeeper, was equal to the task and made a spectacular save.
Immediately after the save, Baxter kicked the ball long to Ross Dawson, who was making a run down the right flank. Dawson controlled the ball and played a perfectly weighted through ball to Lucas Fraser, who was making a sprint down the right wing. Fraser received the pass and began to dribble past Tottenham's defenders. He beat Ryan Bennett with a quick step-over and then left Tyler Flynn for dead with a burst of speed.
As he approached the edge of the box, Fraser crossed the ball to the left side of the box, where Tyler Hunt was waiting. Hunt, anticipating the cross, leaped into the air and attempted an acrobatic overhead volley. The stadium held its breath as the ball seemed to hang in the air, but Hunt's effort was just a fraction of an inch too high, and the ball sailed over the crossbar.
"Oh, what a near-miss!" Jack Harris exclaimed. "Tyler Hunt's overhead volley was a thing of beauty, but just a bit too ambitious."
Mark Davis nodded in agreement. "That's right, Jack. Crystal Palace's counter-attacking play has been clinical, and they've had Tottenham on the back foot for most of the game. If they can keep up this level of intensity, they might just seal the win."
The first half was drawing to a close, with Crystal Palace dominating the proceedings. As the clock ticked down to the 45-minute mark, the Eagles continued to press their advantage. In the 47th minute, Crystal Palace was awarded a free kick just outside the box, about 22 yards away from goal. Ross Dawson stepped up to take the set piece, and the Tottenham wall formed to try and block the shot.
Dawson took his time, carefully placing the ball on the spot and visualizing the trajectory. He took a few steps back, focused his run-up, and struck the ball with power and precision. The ball flew through the air, dipping and swerving as it approached the goal. Jordan Smith, the Tottenham goalkeeper, jumped to his right, but the ball was too powerful and too accurate. It sailed past him and into the top corner of the net, giving the Crystal Palace players a reason to celebrate.
"What a strike!" Jack Harris exclaimed. "Dawson's free kick was perfection! The ball dipped and swerved, and it was unstoppable!"
Mark Davis nodded in agreement. "That's right, Jack. Crystal Palace has been dominant in this first half, and they're well-deserved winners at the break. Tottenham needs to regroup and find a way to get back into this game."
The scoreboard now read 2-0 in favor of Crystal Palace, and the visitors were facing an uphill task to get back into the match. The whistle blew, signaling the end of the first half, and the teams headed into the tunnel to regroup and prepare for the second half.
